  • 240p - we meet again.

  • This is the future.

  • i hate this person's attitude.

  • Down to brass and tacks, that was a ten thousand dollar machine in 2006 (Very nice computer probabbly an 88oo GTX considering the date)

Now, it is fucking handheld. 5 years people. 5 fucking years

  • ipad has done the magic

  • Step 1: proclaim that you'll come up with some world changing idea before you die.

    Step 2: ?

    Step 3: IMMORTALITY!

  • haha it's funny how people are so astonished by this in 2006/2007, while nowadays multi-touch is a common thing to have (ipods and iphones). :D

  • @aquamus

Jeff Han pushed this idea forward.

  • Actually, there was a popular video of the gestural experiments on his website @ nyu a couple years before TED that was pretty popular among interactive designers. I suspect that's when someone at apple first saw it.

  • He anticipated Apple and Co. by over 1 year! 2006!

  • Omfg. Apple has the patent on a CAPACITIVE multi-touchscreen on a mobile phone. Jeff Han has inventet a multi-touchscreen which is based on infrared light and frustrated totalreflexion. His technique is based on a infrared camera mounted underneath the table which captures the infrared light reflected from his fingers. The infrared light comes from LED's mounted on the sides of this acryl glas touchpanel. So we are talking about TWO DIFFERENT PATENTS. nobody has stolen something from anyone.

  • @blackpsymon1 so if the other phone/tablet makers come up with a slightly different input tracking device, the gestures themselves are NOT patentable? Of course, we know Apple is actually trying to own the gesture and not just the technology behind it.

  • @blackpsymon1 so i want to point out that while you are focusing on the specific technical differences of the 2 platforms here, apple has in fact filed for a more broad trademark on the term "multitouch", and today they were denied thankfully. if you think apple only wants control over these ideas with regard to a specific platform you're kidding yourself. more importantly, just like what they did to arlo rose, apple is watching EXECUTION very very carefully, which is fine, just don't patent it.

  • Big deal, I can do all this on my iphone.

  • @2enchant Except this tech demo predated the release of the first iPhone by 16 months.

  • Apple patented doing this *on a phone*.. Completely different. Sigh ....

  • I suppose he has pattented this thing, and the iPhone is using his idea and have paid money to him for using it, right?

  • So Apple stole his idea and now they got a patent which will prevent developers from implementing multi-touch on their tablet or phone...

  • @PhantomAct : no apple doesnt have a patent for multi-touch. They tried to get one though, losers

  • @tninetys If Apple are "losers" I want to be a loser too! Please God!!! Let me "lose" just like Apple

  • asian hahaha no surprise here

  • i thought he was gonna talk about the ted talks haha

  • Wow. i stumbled upon this after 5 years. and now things like this are the norm (thanks to apple) and some of the application are now a mere live wallpaper (on android)

  • I would like to know what kind of screen he is using now?

  • dundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundun!

  • The end animation kinda gave away that apple was going to come with this first: The devil horn hand sign and the snake = Satan in the garden of Eden.... Apple.

  • Been waiting for a long time this technology to come available.

  • LOL at 8.10 it looks like he painted a man ejaculating a giant sperm.

  • this guy does amazing dj'ing on this console: youtube(dot)com/watch?v=vaiRLpuwDZ0. as the presenter here said, imagine the creative capabilities of this interface. amazing.

  • The way he uses the touchpad sort of reminds me of those devices in the movie 'Minority Report.' Mix touch-screen technology with movement-sensing technology (someone educate me on it please) they use that stuff they have in Minority Report does not seem far away

  • amazing that back then in 2006, this stuff was brand new and just about ready to be introduced into the public, NOW, in 2011, this stuff has been with us for years and the novelty wore off, nice presentation of today's technology, from the past

  • Microsoft makes nothing at all they just buy it.

  • @derekstech Did Apple make multitouch? Apple operates the exact same way as MS.

  • @avenuePad

No Apple did not. This pre-dates Apples Patents by 2 years, meaning Apple's patents are not legal.

  • I want it.... i wanna play angry birds on this lol

  • Wow thats really cool, for those who say that apple copied this guy, apple had applied for multi-touch patents and for their gesture patents in 2005, before this video was made. But I definitely think this guy took it to another level.

  • Well Apple did implement multi-touch but the gestures are really basic. This guy's computer OS has a more advance Gesture system while keeping it Simple and intuitive

  • мультитач - наше всё.

  • did he not realize the character he created looked like a guy throwing his hands up while his raging boner attacks the audience....o..m...g..too funny

  • now is 2010. Multi-touch is employed in all kinds of devises. From cellphone to tablet computers.

  • Be a man! Do the right thing ! :P

  • A surprisingly few TED talks earn my applause. This is one of them.

  • excellent

  • great

  • This was 4 years ago...

...he was WAY ahead of his time!

    It's still awesome!

  • OMG, you should SUE APPLE for stealing ideas for the iPHONE!!!

  • aahsearching for a person who will act like a man when the time is right

  • Ich find das selbst jetzt noch beeindruckend

  • Scumbags.

  • Apple don't claim to have invented multi-touch. They've simply implemented it first and best. They can 100% claim to lead the world in consumer multi-touch devices now.

Wait til you see what they do next.

  • @LozBlanko

Apple don't claim to have invented it but they patented it, which means that no other company can use this on their devices.

  • They have patented 'their implementation of it'. Not multitouch in general.

  • The Guardian have featured this today, seems they or indeed Apple are four years behind, still fascinating stuff.

  • Apple copied this and called it their own, now everyone thinks that Apple invented multi touch, how sickening.

  • Oh come now ... do a little research. Apple bought the company that developed this technology (Fingerworks).

  • @rossor11

Jeff Han never worked for Fingerworks, he invented the technology and Fingerworks used his idea on their products.

What apple still did is not good, patenting multi touch. That means that no other manufacturer can do this on their phone.

What if HTC patented touch screen displays on their phones? That would mean that no other phone manufacturer would be able to come out with touch screen phones.

  • Fingerworks was founded by John Elias and Wayne Westerman in 1998. They released consumer multitouch products in the early 2000's, to niche acclaim. Apple bought FIngerworks in 2005, and John and Wayne work at Apple and have filed new patents bearing their name whilst at Apple. This Jeff Han demo is from 2006, and is impressive, but he says himself there is nothing new in the technology itself.

  • Apple likes to pick on little companies for using the multi touch on their devices, but they will not file a lawsuit against Microsoft because they are too big and will crush Apple if they ever did file a lawsuit against them.

This shows that Apple is a cowardish company, they like picking on companies smaller than them but do not pick on comanies bigger than them.

They are still a monopoly just like Microsoft. Only stupid people don't realise this.

  • Microsoft doesn't officially support multitouch. Windows Mobile devices use single touch resistive touch screens, not multitouch capable.

Apple has not sued Palm, despite the Pre infringing on Apple specific multitouch methods and copying a lot of the UI design, animation and interaction.

  • It's in Apple's best interest to keep competition at this stage. Whilst Windows mobile / Palm OS / Android / Blackberry fight it out, there is no clear winner. This is like the computer market prior to the monopoly of Windows.

  • There are plenty of examples of this in pop culture today...James Bond's a Quantum of Solace features this tech in a very cool way, CSI uses this a lot, (as if some podunk police lab has this level of tech,) but hey, it looks neat, also NCIS has it on a few episodes, if you want to see possible future apps.

  • Ill take it!

    Please

    Andrew

  • I saw this video over 2 years ago. It was the inspiration for my Multi-Touch concept. Multi-Touch provides such a great deal of control over your data. But with that control there is a great deal of complexity. There has to be a very adaptive and scalable user-interface system setup to provide that control in an intuitive and easy to use way. You can see all my Multi-Touch concept videos at my channel: thenewtouch

    macslate blogspot com

  • I think apple copied this

  • Their way is slightly different. You don't need to put pressure on the screen for it react.

  • thats awesome.

  • when can i finally own one? i saw this on ted august 2006 and still havent found it. any answers?

  • your answer is: Microsoft Surface. 12grand good luck :)

  • The iphone uses multi-touch and has a lot of similar apps to what he was showing.

  • you can make one yourself search for NUI group on google

  • looks cool, but its easier and seems to require less effort to use a small mouse instead of two hands.

  • nice thing, but did u c how he is switching between the apps? looks like he is hiding an old-fashioned interface under his desk :-)

  • Yeah that's because they haven't made an OS (operating system) that works based on that system, in the time of this video ;-)

  • Now integrate it in voting machines and make the liars forever stop. There is no excuse for the inaccuracy in the screens they presently use.

  • Awesome. I think computer aided design/modeling in all fields need this technology. and soon. (physics, architecture, biology, etc.)

  • Want.

  • The most obvious adaption I'd like to use.

Especially in conjunction with a data framework known as the Personal Brain.

  • This is amazing! The closest thing I can think of is the "dream editor" in Minority Report - I bet this guy was a member of Spielberg's future design think tank.

  • Hah! That's exactly what it reminded me of =)

  • Simply WOW. I see myself designing logos on that some day.

  • The future is coming! And it's making me touch all over it.

  • this dude knows how to do a presontation!

  • holy cow! iPhone 2.0. can be so so so much more intuitive than it is now. With tech like this, mayb we can manipulate anything. Gosh.

  • But this thing was invented by Microsoft long time ago. They made a touch screen coffee table which you can interact and paint with your hand, put a camera on the table and the table recognizes the device. It did what this guy did. Everything including picture managability. ETC. But this one looks alot faster responsive.

  • MS didn't do it first.

  • Someone give this guy more money right now.

  • maybe a quarter of a million people would not have stumbled upon this video otherwise, relax brother.

  • exactly UniversalBrother108 ... like me.

  • Holy Jesus...

  • This would be amazing for creating music as well.

  • this is some obvious shit, and i'm glad they're finally getting it together... mghghhrr arrgh, I'm so pissed to be typing right now... if someone who works on this reads this comment hire me, I can linux program I've been building one of these and I can't sleep at night worrying waiting for this

  • i would love that in my tech classes... damn mouse pisses me off.. its like drawing with a rock.

  • To Fil0403, cfischer83: you seem to be the oblivious ones here. who in the world concludes that a concept was conceived on the day it was publicized? just because jeff publicly demonstrated it in 2006 doesn't mean he developed the idea in 2006; it's called research. and research takes years to develop. microsoft publicly announced their surface idea in 2007; does that mean ms created surface in 2007? ms has been working on it since 2001, and jeff since earlier. get a brain dude.

  • Thats like hitting the lottery and complaining that people treat you differently! Or that u no longer need to work that your fat! So we should hand our lotto winnings over to bums and wine-o's and be free....hahahah..Thats retarded...Get on your new tred mill and loose some weight..thats the real answer!

  • There's a lot more where this came from:)

google "ted talks" and check it out!

  • iPhone & Microsoft Surface implemented this technology from this guy.

  • Except MS has been developing Surface for 5 years now...

  • Actually that's wrong. Jeff Han uses his FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) touch screen, Surface uses infrared cameras and iPhone uses a mutual capacitance touch screen. Jeff's screen is the best one because of its low cost and precision (plus the ability of sensing pressure).

  • Is this the same kind of technology used on the iPhone? Or is Han's work building upon that.

  • similar i guess you could say, but this is that but on a bigger scale, and doing more things

  • I heard that Iphone's technology is Han's work.

  • Next step... holographics... ;)

  • Cool.

  • this product and this guy is a few years ahead of the market. very good!

  • Everyone is using windows. No one is using MS dos. ARE YOU!? Mac is windows and windows is windows its not a copyrighted name. Windows is just the name for the icons you click on instead of typing in commands like you do on MS dos. Duh...

  • well not quite everyone is using ms windows ...

  • GUI != Windows. Silly faggot.

  • Get microsoft surface

  • Get a real friend

  • HA HA!!!! here... lemme break out my comp.... *pulls out a piece of plexiglass*

  • Does anyone know how to contact Mr. Han?

    LoriSchlitz

  • google it

  • This would be amazing for creating music as well.

  • I want one!!!!!!!!!

  • dude. where do I buy one?

  • this is just cool. I think we can all agree on that. I honestly had no idea this was even possible but now that I do, this could mean 5-10 years later our laptops and desktops (and other electronic devices) could potentially change dramatically.

  • From my point of view Microsoft Surface technology looks like a 60's invent compared to this. Is like CRT's and LCD's screens.

  • To all the retards accusing Microsoft of ripping this off:

    - this is from 2006;

    - Microsoft has been working on this since 2001.

Besides, anyone who has a brain and actually uses it knows that it is not feasible to steal an idea like this and build a whole computer and OS around it in less than 1 year.

  • i gotta get this bad boy!

  • you guys are morons honestly.

even he himself stated that so many people are working on technology like this.

THE MORE WORKING ON IT, THE BETTER IT BECOMES.

People see others ideas, from there they can better theirs, and vice versa.

Stop being anti this and that, or a fanboy of this.

If everyone thought like you, the wheel would still be rock.

  • true.

  • is this on tv btw ???

  • no.

  • wow um this is cool.... this is so cool. i hope i can get somthing like this in the near future

  • lol. as soon as i heard about M$ Surface, i thought about perceptive pixel.

M$ acts like its something new :o

i really hope they bought the technology out instead of blantantly ripping it off.

  • LOL. As soon as I read your comment I thought about how retard some people can be.

Why shouldn't Microsoft act like it's something new if they invented it before this demo?

I really hope you get a brain instead of accusing Microsoft of "blatantly ripp off" something demoed in 2006 which they had been working on since 2001.

  • Douchebag,

You might want to learn English before you go posting comments about how "retard" some people are. Looks like you're the fanboy peckerwood. And yeah, for the record, I don't use windows because I'm not so much of a moron that I can't make choices to use better alternatives. Jackass.

  • and how long do you think Han was working on it to introduce the technology over a year before MS introduced it? This stuff doesn't happen overnight.

Fine, MS has been working on it for quite a while, but everyone acts like they knew that they've been working on it for that long, when they had no idea about it until all the news stories started popping up saying that they've been working on the technology for the last 6 years.

  • kind of....

  • Oh, you poor bastards using windows... I agree with doerrstop...way to innovate, *cough* rip off...M$

  • Oh, you poor retarded pretending you don't use Windows... I agree with anyone with a brain... Way to show your ignorance, accusing Microsoft of ripping this off when this is from 2006 and Microsoft has been working on it since 2001. Idiot.

  • This is so cool!

  • kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kindakida kind of kinda kindakida kind of kinda kindakida kind of kinda kindakida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda kida kind of kinda kinda

    every 2 words a kinda! ;-)

    Amazing technology! Congratulations, Jeff!

  • Amazing...This was added a year ago and MS is now demoing what took them 5 years to develop. Way to innovate MS!

  • Just because they demo'd it now doesn't mean that they weren't thinking of the idea at the same time when both were in development.

Quit bashing and jump on board to make everyone's world a bit better.

  • This is a great leap forward. It is another step towards the future OS, in which we decend into a virtual-reality world which we can see, touch and smell, in which amazing, vibrant artistic creations are possible. I'm just happy to see us finally take the next step towards that, after mousing around clicking windows for so long.

  • For those that are interested, here is a taste of that future OS... Just Google for "starfiredreams os 9000."

  • microsoft. com/surface

  • sorry I don't see much here good for photo editing and playing with a lava lamp but don't see much of a practical use for this as far as just normal computing.

  • that's because you have a wooly and unpenetrating mind.

  • ok whatever.....

  • Well, the point here is that the interface being demonstrated here requires no training - imaging being able to go to a screen where you don't need a keyboard or mouse - just your fingers. You're no longer confined to how you type and where the mouse can be used...this is a next step in using computers.

This is something that wil be a big thing as costs come down for the tech - and, like the mouse, in about decade from this, we'll be wondering how we managed to function without it.

  • This is awesome! No need to pick a command like strech, scale, tilt, modify or rotate; it's just simple gestures...

So Bill, you gonna post a response vid?

BTW, do you know where I can get one these?

  • Bill has posted a response vid

Google: "Microsoft Surface" I can't put a URL into a comment

  • the image in the end, wus made into a sperm!:D

  • he kept saying that there is no interface, what a lie, the MULTI-TOUCH sensor is an interface! (Also the Google Earth-like program had a GUI bar at the top)

But aside from that little thing, three words sum it all up:

    I want that!

  • Microsoft is in deep shit now.

  • Probaby the BEST and finally the FIRST REAL NEW direction for interface design since the iMac.

  • Meh! There clearly is an interface.

    A) One does get a closer look a t a photograph by rubbing it. It may be simple but its far from natural.

    B) In the Google Earth style app there were BUTTONS! There is OBVIOUSLY still an interface. Having to learn a huge list of gestures will make it little better than an ancient CLI system.

  • This is the way MySpace put millions of web designers out of business. Why? Because they didn't see it coming. This is the way the world should be :)

No doubt, THIS WILL KILL THE MICROSOFT MONOPOLY!

  • Definitely, its going to change things a lot.

  • This is awsome. If you don't think that, obvioulsy you know nothing about computers.

  • I don't get it, why are youtube commentors so arrogant and pointlessly argumentative? Why is "you're an idiot" about the most common thing I see?

Jeff Han talked about this technology as INTUITIVE, not as an elitist niche. Anyone, even someone who's never had an email account before could easily see how amazing this technology is.

  • Thank you, for the voice of reason!

  • It can't run m'soft office efficiently ... one would take less time using normal keyboard

  • You wouldn't need "Microsoft Office" anymore if someone invented a set of more intuitive interfaces like this one, coupled with a voice recognition and command interface. Office would need reinvention.

  • that is so coool!

  • Multi-Touch Sensor

  • Cool... but it's really nothing groundbreaking...

  • IT'LL CHANGE THE WORLD!! >:0

  • Does it run Hotdog Pro??? Hello, trying to figure out my life here!

  • iPhone was the first device released that uses a similar multitouch for manage sizes of photos

  • some people just don't get it. i don't know who said this was just software, but that isn't what is so cool. it's the interface. this could potentially turn computers into just screen (eventually) and remove the mouse and keyboard. i can't wait. they have already sold 1 wall to an "undisclosed" military customer.

  • "undisclosed" - Bill Gates

  • how absolutely wonderful.

  • funny

  • you satan worshippper, satan handsign
