I grew up in suburban New England, and I always assumed the African American characters were the residents of the house and owners of Tom (or whatever cat is involved), not maids. It wasn't until much later, when I was an adult, that I realized it was racist. That particular stereotype just wasn't in my environment.

Jerry's involuntary dance in this one, though, is clearly racist.
