  • hi steelo!

how do all your fish not fight?

    thanks :)

btw i love all your videos, really helping me out :)

  • @k4ndyk1ng Not the ones in this tank. I kept them well fed and well acclimated to being around all the fish you see.

  • WOW. Im not sure if its a good thing i found this video, Its like it gives me an excuse to add more fish to my 90 gallon.

  • @1i11i1 lol, I know the feeling, but if you don't have a similar setup and filtration as mines, I would advise against overstocking the tank like this. Good luck.

  • @newyorksteelo I am actually rebuilding my 90 gallon, to make a similar setup, THANKS to your videos! :)

  • @ithinkthisisit Sounds like fun.

  • Hey there, Beautiful tank and fish! I had a question, is your Moorish idol still alive and is there any other advice you can give me in caring for it.

    Thanks

  • @ElectricBlues4life The Moorish Idol is still alive and kicking but now thriving in someone else's 180g system. I am not longer in the care of this fish. All in the info you need to know for me keeping it alive for more than a year is in the video. Thanks for the feedback.

  • Amazing!!! I actually want stock the same 3 angel fish species you have together in a 75 gallon. Do you have any tips as to who goes first? Also, are powder blue tangs hard to keep? I was thinking 3 angels, powder blue and a clown fish in a 75 gallon.

  • @TropheusJon Its doable with plenty of hiding spaces and introduce all three at the same time. The tangs are easy to care for if you provide them with a safe and healthy environment. Good luck.

  • I just bought a fairy wrasse and it is being picked on now by my coral beauty. What do I do? I can't by another tank to keep him in. Please help!!!!!!

  • @orcas134 Based on questions you've asked in the past, I gather that you are trying to keep these animals in a nano cube. The Coral Beauty being one of the more dominant fish should have been your last addition to the tank. Try feeding the Angel well to see if the aggression stops or find a way to separate them. If you can somehow place the Angel in another holding tank for 1 week or 2, while the Fairy Wrasse acclimates and regains its health and strength you may be able to pull it off.

  • Thanks so much!

  • @orcas134 Your welcome.

  • I have a MAJOR problem with my coral beauty. I have a 28 gallon nanocube and my coral beauty has ich. It won't go away and I've been doing the treatment for over a week and um worried sick. Also I was thinking about getting a mandarin dragonet but I hate all the copopods that I have to deal with. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @orcas134 I have a video that discusses Ich in detail you may want to check out. Not too sure if medicating the tank is such a great idea buddy. Also, if you have a deep sand bed, I would not add this fish.

  • I guess your fish is Gill from finding Nemo, since they both got injured! anyone? no? just me? ok whatever!

  • @Smittyman915 lol :)

  • hi steelo,

can you do a video on the powder blue tang ?

    thanks :)

  • @k4ndyk1ng I am planning to get this fish again sometime in the near future. If I do, I will cover it in a new video. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Wow, you are very lucky to have kept this baby alive after all the beat up issues. I admire the fish but could never dare to keep one. Nice job!,

  • @nuuaimmy111 Thanks!

  • hi steelo!

do you think the purple tang is worth the money? :)

  • @k4ndyk1ng It's an expensive fish, but for some, worth the price :)

  • hi steelo!

is the purple tang max size?

  • @k4ndyk1ng This fish can grow up to 10 inches.

  • so i noticed the powder blue and would they be alright in a 75 gallon with a "dory" if i got them at the same time and they were small, for a while anyways like a year or 2

  • @Bechertanks They will be fine if added at the same time and as juveniles. Once they outgrow the tank, you have to find them a new home in a larger aquarium. A year or 2 sounds about right. Good luck.

  • Thanks for all the info you have on your videos. Thanks cause now I have my 55g up and running. So again thanks and look forward to learning more from you. Hope you don't mind if I bother you with a few question here and there. I have a 10-15 gallon tank that I plan on making into a sump cause my wet dry trickle filter there is no room for my skimmer. If u have any ideas how to make one please shoot me some ideas thanks...

  • @TheMigg79 Thanks for the compliment and words of encouragement. I can only help you build the sump if I was present there with you, but by exchanging messages its almost impossible. I do have several videos describing in detail how my sumps work and cover 3 different sumps. You may get some ideas from watching those. Good luck,

  • @Newyorksteelo. Thank you for the words of encourgement. I look forward to checking out more of your videos...... Thanks

  • Is this the 90g?

  • @Dabears1996 Yes, before the rebuild.

  • i have an interesting idea for you nysteelo. i had to blackout my tank recently due to dinoflagellates. i noticed after the 3 day blackout that the two tangs in my tank that were picking on eachother stopped. blacking out your tank might be an interesting thing to look into for solving territory disputes amongst bitchy fish.

  • @jimmyx36 You may be right here. This is why most acclimation procedures recommend that the lights go off for the day to prevent territorial aggression momentarily. Thanks for sharing that :)

  • 4:53 is perfectly true. That DSB probably helps you out with the nitrate reduction. If it works for you, why not? :)

  • @funlad3 It works like a charm. please visit my video titled "How To Setup A Saltwater Aquarium Deep Sand Bed" to see the potential of a deep sand bed where I cover a closeup of it. Thanks for watching.

  • hi steelo :)

my tank is going to be 4 ft and 40gal can i have an yellow tang if i give it enough swimming space?

  • @k4ndyk1ng Initially yes, but once it outgrows the tank which would be within a years time, you will need to give him away or sell him. Tanks o best in tanks 100 gallons or more. In my case, I had to get rid of the fish after a little over a year and a half.

  • @newyorksteelo ok thanks :)

  • @k4ndyk1ng Your welcome.

  • hey buddy, i was looking over your old videos again and i noticed that you said in this video that you were going to stock this tank wall to wall with corals. Obviously the tank was broken down but do you think you could have stocked the system as you have now (full of sps) with all the fish seen in the video?

  • @V12Di3seL Yes, it is quite possible considering that all the fish are reef safe, but to do so in a 90g tank would possible cause nutrient issues, inhibiting the growth of your corals. None the less, it is quite possible with the filtration and methods I utilized but would much better fair upgrading to a 120 or 160g tank. There are 18 fish in this tank, most of which are large, but there were corals in there too.

  • hi man nice tank you no your fish thanks for all the info keep up the good work for all of us who keep marine

  • @littlemissstripes Thanks you for the much appreciated feedback :)

  • Whoops sorry dude, thought I caught a glimpse of a small niger trigger

  • @mras355 No problem :)

  • Amazing tank! You have any problems with the trigger nipping at the idols fins?

  • @mras355 I do not have a Trigger in this tank, but being that Triggers are aggressive, it is possible for them to bully other fish. This tank on the other hand is a reef safe community tank (no aggressive fish). Thanks for the much appreciated feedback :)

  • hey steelo how long did you keep your moorish idol for or do you still have him .just got one this week but bit worried im going to lose him as for all the tales you hear about this species and what do you feed it. thanks

  • @mattloyd0066 Everything you see inside the tank was sold because I had to break down the system to replace the stand. You can see some of the water damage caused to the cheap stand I had before on my video "Reef Aquarium Oak Wood Stand Review" The contents inside the tank including the live rock, sand, corals, fish and Idol are now in a 180 gallon reef thriving. Please visit some of my most recent videos to see the changes that have taken place since then Thanks for watching :)

  • hey steelo how long did you keep your moorish idol for or do you still have him .just got one this week but bit worried im going to lose him as for all the tales you hear about this species and what do you feed it. thanks

  • hi:) can u name me all those species you have?

  • @varmman There are so many, I don't think it will fit here :)

  • What's your water change schedule like? What kind of success do you have with coral growth?

  • @jsteve2112 Back when I had this setup overstocked with 18 fish, I used to perform a 20g water change very month and had great coral growth. I did the water changes just to be on the safe side due to the overstock but did not really need it since there was never any signs of nitrates in almost three years. Now, I rebuild the system and perform no water changes.

  • @newyorksteelo I don't necessarily think that 18 fish in a 90 gallon is "overstocked," but honestly my own philosophy is that a "multitude of water changes covers a multitude of problems." I currently have a 120 and I'm planning to stock it up to about 20 to 22 fish, but my schedule is 15 gallons a week which turns into 15 gallons about 3 times a month. You're going to have to do some water changes.

  • @jsteve2112 When 5 of the 18 fish are 6" or bigger, trust me buddy, that's beyond overstocked. Aside from this, the general rule of thumb for saltwater fish is 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons of water, once again leaning towards the fact that it was way overstocked, however, because I utilized deep sand beds, large skimmer, refugium, reactors and so on allowed me to perform the water changes monthly without any nutrient issues. I recently have yet to do a water change on this 90 in 10 months :)

  • Nice like it hey check out my Zero Edge Aquarium I'm trying to buy a tank"" also can u check how can I make my sump better??? Thenks steelo,,,,

  • @MrBelly209 I will try my best to visit some of your videos and leave a comment if need be.

  • How long did you have him in all? I am still not convinced that these fish should be sold/housed. I hope you prove me wrong. I would really like to have one. There are still others like the leopard wrasse and the clown tang that, like the Idol, their death to life ratio with in a six months are so low that I am not sure that they should be sold/captured. Beautiful fish though. Thanks

  • @sirrealtravelr I had him for close to 2 years in this 90g tank before he and the other tangs outgrew the tank and were sold and are now housed in a nice 180g tank. I do somewhat agree with you on the sale of this fish, but with the hobby evolving in so many positive ways, these fish are lasting longer and longer now and days. Thanks and good luck :)

  • hey what kind of light are you using

  • @superwar23 Coralife Aqualight Pro

  • Moorish idol is hard to keep because it don't eat

  • @brianlam200061 To a certain extent, this is true, but in my case, the easiest thing to do was to get him to eat. Its what you actually feed him that will determine his survival. These fish in nature live off sponges making it difficult to offer it the nutritional value they need. But you are right in that if they wont eat, they can't survive.

  • ey mr newyork!

i have seen more of your youtube video's. nice Tank!

about the Moorish Idol. I bought one for myself. its not that overcrouded as your tank. only 5 fish on a 250 liter. in the netherlands they call me crazy to buy this fish. they say it will die in a month. but i think they are all wrong cause it is possible if you know how to let him eat. and the system is good.

I hope he likes his new house.

i will follow your new tank!

    keep up the good work!

  • @nedFanatic I couldn't agree with you more here lol. I wouldn't call you crazy, but instead congratulate you on owning one of the most beautiful fish of the ocean. Keep doing what you are doing and it should thrive in your system. Only thing is, if it gets too big, prepare to find it a new home in a bigger tank. Good luck and enjoy your new fish :)

  • @newyorksteelo

my moorish is eating schrimps with honey.

    Its a good eater :)

    what are you giving him?

    every tip is welcome!

  • @nedFanatic When I had him I fed him several times a day, different foods, at different times. Morning time I would feed mysis shrimp, then a little later some flakes, then formula 1 & 2 pellets or Reef Life Spectrum pellets, and right before lights out I would feed a bit of Instant Ocean Food Gel.

  • @newyorksteelo

yeah i fed him pelletes formula 2 today to. its eating if he is hungry every minute of the day.

    thnx for the tips!

  • I would recommend upgrading to a 240 gallon fish tank. : ]

  • @CoolerPeeps123 Keep en watching to see where this tank is today :)

  • yo ? hapend with that Moorish Idol .

i you not geting that 6 ft to 8 ft tank on the Moorish Idol Problems And Solutions video.LOL

  • @PapoBoom All the fish in this tank along with the live rock, sand, and the DIY sump refugium were sold because i had to replace the damaged stand I had before. This lead me to document the rebuild process of this system. I decided to keep the 90g system for the time being though but if I do upgrade, I will document it on YouTube as well.

  • And a fox face rabbitfish

  • Ok are they ok in a fish only set up (because I was thinking on getting lionfish, triggers, pufferfish and wrasses,). (I might add an eel aswell)

  • @Fishyboy1998 Yes, but then I am assuming your tank is going to be 180 gallons or bigger. This is the key to their survival and if you plan to add all these fish that grow huge, you better have a large tank. Good luck.

  • Could I keep a moorish idol in with a Niger or a Blue throat triggerfish

  • @Fishyboy1998 If the tank is spacious and you stock the system in the right order, the answer is yes.

  • Hi again I was wanting to know

  • Ok thanks:)

  • What do you feed them apart from flakes what you did

  • @Fishyboy1998 Flakes, Mysis Shrimp, Natures Ocean Formula 1 and 2, as well as Natures Ocean Gel Foods. I have read that New Life Spectrum pellets work well also, although I never used them. I do not give him all of these foods in one shot cause it would nuke your tank. I fed him often but one of each and change it up everyday.

  • Sorry about that how do you keep a moorish idol successfully

  • @Fishyboy1998 The information you need is found on this very video buddy. Good luck.

  • How do you keep A

  • Hey again do you still have the idol , how's it doing , thinking of getting one , but also got a reeftank with lots of shrimp and hermit snails ect , would they be dinner to an

    Idol cheers

  • @jacklad99 All the inhabitants of this tank, including the live rock, live sand, and corals were all sold and are now thriving in a much larger 180g system. Keep on watching my videos to see how I broke down this system and rebuild it back up. As for your question, yes, the Moorish Idol will eat these :)

  • how do you get your sand so awesome?

  • @Teslasdik It takes time to fully develop into a mature working deep sand bed filter, but if you seed it with good quality live rock, it should be a fast transition. Look to my 2 part video called Marine Aquarium Deep Sand Beds to find more information about this. Good luck.

  • hi! just asking can i feed my marine fishes with fresh water fish foods...........

like "ADA DO! Aqua" garlic and spirulina.......................

they are eating them up... but actly i am concerned about how much nutrients they are getting

  • @TheSoumikbasu Yes, it is possible to do this however, I recommend you stick with marine foods so they the animals are ensured proper nutrition. Only use this practice when you have no other food available. Good luck.

  • great vid

  • @FishyDrizzy Thanks :)

  • have you got any videos of your 180g sytem and what elts do you feed your idle ?

  • @1996Golly This fish along with all of the inhabitants in the tank were sold to a gentleman that set up a 180g reef. I used the money from that to redo this system due to a problem I had my the stand. Had to replace the stand and decided to start over. I documented the whole process on YouTube so you might want to take a look at those videos. I fed this guy all kinds of foods and he took it all. Thanks for watching and please don't forget to rate my videos :)

  • I SEE GILL, MARLIN, NEMO AND DORI.

  • @MRBRUCEB0SS :)

  • What kind of food did you use to give your fishes?Besides the tetramin marine flakes? Also, is OceanPrime reef flakes good?

  • @linbeg ALl of the above. Including frozen mysis, formula 1 and 2 pellets, and on occasion cyclopeeze.

  • Great tank. I have watched many of your videos and learned a great deal so for that Thank you, Question how is the Moorish Idol is he still doing well? I plan on getting a couple soon, Thanks

  • @szambodi He is doing well in the 180g system. Thanks for the comment :)

  • Hi there ive recently added moorish idol

3 days ago. Since then hes been picked on by my sailfin tang. The fighting has stopped but hes stopped eating n got spots all over his body aswell as popeye. I dont know what to do. Every other fish is fine and been in the tank for 9 months. Pls help thanks

  • @dilu10 The only thing to do here is remove the sailfin tang and put it in the refugium, and let the moorish idol acclimate. Most likely, the diseases are a result of stress from the bickering of the sailfin tang. Good luck.

  • Lovely tank. I see your Powder Blue and Regal Tang are doing well together.

Would I have a good chance of keeping one of each in a 5 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot tank? Without them fighting I mean?

  • @ChrisRottweiler Yes, just make sure you add them at the same time and that these fish are your last additions to your tank. Let them acclimate together and there will be very little to no fighting at all. Good luck.

  • @theprankster5000 Thanks :)

  • Hey newyorksteelo, I reasently watched your video on liverock, and I was wondering, should I order my more expensive LR during the beginning of the cycle and later add some of the cheaper LR. The first batch will be 40 lbs. For a 75 g fowlr

  • @TheBestB123 Adding it on a later date can be beneficial in that more life from the rock will survuve since there will be a easier and faster cycle, but this also means no animals untill all the rock is in and fully cycled. Its up to you. Good luck.

  • So if I got a hippo tang when it was half an inch long I could keep him in my 75 g with peaceful tankmates for 5 years?

  • @TheBestB123 It would probably grow to adulthood by year 2, but if you keep this tang only, you can keep him for many years.

  • so, i was planning on storing alot of saltwater in a garbage can( new), would this work, or will there be toxins involved.

  • @TheBestB123 Store it in a sealed container. Good luck.

  • so,do u think cleaner shrimps make much of a difference when it comes to ich, mostly for tangs?

  • @TheBestB123 They help

  • what types of fish would you recommend for beginners?

  • @Gaby3898 Mostly damsels, with the exception of a few others, but now and days, if you use good quality live rock and live sand, you can pretty much keep any fish once the tank matures. Just stay away from moorish idols cause this fish should be for experienced aquarists only. Good luck.

  • ive watched this video like six times just to see the moorish idol just wondering is there going to be a new moorish idol when the 90g is all setup again?

  • @zacguitarshreder12 Yes, but I will only raise him and then give him away in a year or 2.

  • hi are moorish reef safe , dont they eat polyps , what they like with shrimps, and hermits

  • @jacklad99 I never had a problem with mines cause I fed him often and good food. If you do not feed this fish often, it will pick on other animals.

  • so how long does i tank have to be setup for a dragonet? mine has been up and running for a bout 5 or 6 months. i do see alot of copepods in my tank, but i also see many dead ones, is that bad?

  • @TheBestB123 I have had quite a few dragonets in my years in the hobby and they all die after 6 months or more. These animals will lower the population of pods in your system and eventually starve itself. Also, you want to encourage the pod population in your tank so they can help get rid of algae and detritus. i recommend stay away from this fish altogether.

  • lmao at 6:28. u sound boriqua haha. but great video and gorgeous fish.

  • @bxcrimson i am half rican in case you didnt know :)

  • where did u buy your new live rock? and how much per pound

  • @TheBestB123 I got it for free from a local fish store here in Yonkers NY and he owed me the favor so he ordered it for me. My other rock is coming from liveaquaria.

  • @newyorksteelo thats exactly the website i order my fish, rock, and inverts from.

and could i keep 1 tang in a 75 its whole life? like a powder blue or yellow or maybe hippo?

  • @TheBestB123 You can but it will probably die prematurely after a few years. These fish fair well on 6 feet long tanks and in a 75, it probably wont grow to its full size and as I said die prematurely.

  • ok then thank you nice videos you are the best

  • @pokedude726 Your welcome. Thanks.

  • so sorry remove message i sent it said it wouldnt go though so i guess it kept going please forgive me

  • @pokedude726 You are probably getting a message saying that the comment needs to be approved. This means that I set up comment approval so I have to see the comment and then approve it. This does not mean I am not getting the comment.

  • i want to start with a moorish idol can you give me some information about them i know they are for experts but its your first experience then same with a bigginer then if you get my point its your first either way

  • @pokedude726 You Have posted this question 5 times already. If you continue to do so, I will be forced to block you. I already answered this question below.

  • i actualy want to start with a moorish idol can you give me things for me to know about them i know some things like feeding and acclimation

  • @pokedude726 No need to type the same question 3 times my friend. You cannot possibly start with a Moorish Idol because these fish are territorial and should be your last fish added to your system. Most of the info needed to care for this fish is found in this video.

  • how big was your powder blue tang on this video? and did you ever have problems with ich? also, how did you get all of that coraline algae to grow. i mean your tank is just breathtaking.

  • @TheBestB123 Thank you. I already answered your first 2 questions in the comment below. As for the coraline algae, it comes in live rock and will grow like crazy after your tank reaches stability and you maintain your calcium levels above 400 ppm.

  • how big was your powder blue tang on this video? and did you ever have problems with ich?

  • @TheBestB123 Never had a problem with ich. Watch my video on ich problems and solutions to find out more about how to deal with ich. Good luck.

  • @TheBestB123 6 inches.

  • Comment removed

  • @pokedude726 OK

  • could i keep a hippo tang in a 75 gallon all its life?

  • @TheBestB123 Yes.

  • is this 90 gallon 4 feet long?

  • @TheBestB123 Yes.

  • So how old is your hippo tang on this video?

  • @TheBestB123 A little over a year old.

  • sorry my older prother is sending all those nerd coment btw watch my vids

  • @TheBestB123 Haaaa lol, no problem, nice videos. That dog is sneaky :)

  • @newyorksteelo haha thanks :) and some of my vids are dumb but there fun to watch well thanks agin bye! btw you have some cool vids too cool fish!

  • @TheBestB123 Thank you. Hopefully c\some day you will have a beautiful piece of nature in your own home as well :) By the way, your videos were fun to watch and entertaining :)

  • so heres wat have so far..... a 125 gallon tank, 135 lbs live rock, alot of live sand( not sure how much), a protein skimmer, 40 gallon tank( for sump), 1 overflow box, a return pump, and some good lighting for the refugium which will house macro algae and snails and others. so that should be all i need right? OH also i have a RO system.

  • @TheBestB123 That sounds like a sweet set up if you got all the good stuff when it comes to brands. Looking forward to you uploading some videos in the future of your new system. Let me know if you decide to upload so i can take a peek. Welcome to the hobby.

  • @newyorksteelo thankyou, i just hope i can get a setup like youes:)

  • @newyorksteelo thankyou, i just hope i can get a setup like yours:)

  • How come you havnt upgrade yet?

  • @TheBestB123 As you already know, I working on rebuilding this system, but to upgrade to a bigger tank would mean more weight and my house has floors that I do not think would support a bigger tank.

  • i love your tank! i really want a Moorish idol but they are £100 in the uk :/

  • @PlainPass Thanks. If I were you, I would give it a try and get one if you have a big enough tank and if the store has a guarantee of the fish. Good luck.

  • @newyorksteelo ye i read that they are extremely hard to feed and care for in captivity and they die within a month or year :/ by any chance is a 4ft length by 2ft width enough?? XD

    many thanks! XD

  • @PlainPass That is a similar size to this system so i would say yes, for about a year or 2. After this, the fish may outgrow the system and will have to rid of it. Good luck.

  • @newyorksteelo im not gonna over stock it.just got 2 clowns, regal blue tang, yellow tang, foxface fish as i see in ure video it seems fine with it..plus the regal and yellow tang are small..so there is plenty of room to swim and hide.XD

    many thanks XD

  • your fish look that they are being blown away

  • @pokedude726 Try going diving and watch these fish in their natural habitat to learn how they live, and then replicate it in your home aquarium. the love the high flow because they live where the waves washes up on the shore. Ever look at the beach and the waves coming at you? Right there, beneath the water, is where these fish and corals live. this is not freshwater budddy :)

  • I thought a foxface could not go into a tank with corals I might have been told diffrent but I was just asking can u please get back with me on that. thanx.

  • @nitty121 Not true. Mines completely leaves my corals alone but I do feed it well :)

  • how is the moorish idol doing? its been almost a year now? they dont have a long life in captivity ive been reading, but i really want to get one. have you ever had a problem with the idol nipping or eating your corals?
