I think that with the advent of scientific understanding of dementia pugilistica many fighters are very leery about taking too much punishment. I really think this is at least part of the reason you don't see too much heavy infighting and lots of stalking and avoidance.

The Klitschko's are pretty good fighters however. I think Vitali would have given anyone, in any era, a serious challenge. And at least he doesn't mug his opponents the way Ali constantly did from Bonavena on. BORING!

Having said that, Vlad would have likely beaten Primo Carnera. Though Primo maybe had more heart. If you want to look back in history to a big fighter who wasn't an obvious name, but would have beaten either Klitschko, I'd point to Ernie Terrell. Like many fighters from the 60's and 70's, he'd be king if fighting today.

This is not an anti-semetic statement, however, sugar who I recently saw admiting to be Jewish I thilnk might have some animosity to Wladamir and Vitali because of their Ukranian nationality. Jewish dislike for Ukranians came out when that John D from Ohio, who had come from the Ukraine was being tried for World War II crimes. Whether Wlad or Vitali are quartyer Jewish, I don't know, but for SUgar to suggest that Wlad would have been beaten by Carnera is absurd.

Many (I own the Unforgivable Blackness : The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson dvd0. The one thing people don't seem to factor in when comparing JJ to more contemporary fighters is that by all accounts it was next to impossible to lay a glove on the guy. He was certainly the best defensive fighter of all the heavyweight champs.

In some cases yes but he fought just as many fast and skilled fighters. Sure he lost against Joe Choynski but Choynski was certainly not tiny or slow. When watching the Johnson fights speed doesn't seem to be much of an issue really but distance was. Getting in close with Johnson without get pounded to smithereens regardless of how fast or slow was the problem. Johnson-Jeffries is a good example.

Bert doesn't know his stuff. Carnera consistently dropped his left when jabbing Louis. This allowed Louis to counter with a right over the jab all night. Even Valuev doesn't consistently make this fundamental mistake. Valuev had better defense against Holyfield than Carnera had against Louis. Now when it comes to the Klitschkos, they rarely even get hit. Bert doesn't know his stuff. He's a bitter old propagandist. The sooner he goes senile the better.

Sugar's not racist and he is generally an excellent boxing historian. His only weakness is that he sometimes tends to over-rate some of the older fighters when comparing them to more modern ones.

That said, he was spot on about the Klitschko fight - it was pathetic. Klitschko is a little better than he showed here but he is still one of the worst H/W champs ever. The H/W division is in the worst shape it's ever been in.

beh no, conntro Jim Maloney aveva gia' un record di 39 vittorie e 2 sconfitte, era 26enne,anche se in verita' 2 settimane prima del match aveva avuto una frattura ad una costola. Maloney pero'pesava 30 kg in meno di Primo, il quale vinse poi la rivincita 4 mesi dopo. Maloney cmq pugile piuttosto mediocre. Contro Di Meglio aveva 31 anni e francamente non credo avesse il diabete. Concordo invece sul match con Diener, perso per squalifica, era solo il suo settimo incontro.
