I think that there ARE people out there who work their horses for hoursss and then stick them in a little wooden stall that they can not move around it. BUT, not every carriage horse owner is like that. You take well care of your horses, but there are those people out there.

Our horses and STABLES are monitored daily by the aspca,and regularly by the Health Dept,Consumer Affiars,NYPD,Parks Department, DEP. Each horse must get a full physical exam EVERY 6 MONTHS. Every horse gets a min of 5 WEEKS OFF A YEAR.So you are incorrect,"those people"are not our business.I should know I'm a carriage owner/operator,co-owner of Clinton Park Stables, I live on 108ac boarding ranch

To finish my post: EVEN IF handlers were beating the horses out of sight, such as at the stables, it would SHOW in the horses.. they would roll their eyes, hold their heads high & away (dodging), jump, flinch, etc. whenever ANYONE came near them. As some one who has been around horses all my life , as a horse farm owner, and carriage owner I must say my horses are as willing to get in the trailer to go to the city as they are to go to the farm! As long as they are with me we are all happy. Are the police horses yearning for the meadow, no. They have a routine as do our horses. They are eager for that routine every day. Horses are routine animals, but it's impossible to impart a lifetime of knowladge of working horses like this

You are absolutely right. When I worked for a private carriage operation, not a commercial one, my horses used to load themselves onto the trailer. I'd walk them up to the van or the trailer and let go, and they'd get into the van or the trailer on their own. They loved their work. They loved being around people and out seeing places and action. They'd even turn around and back into the correct stall on the van on their own.

No. horses built cities and have been working in cities since the Romans. They have worked along side cars for over 100 years and EVCERY carriage horse oges to farm for vacation several times a yr. I believe the horses get both, don't they? They get their time off in a meadow, but they also get to do what they love to do, which is be around people doing a job.

I've seen carriage horses throw their heads through their collars and into to their bridles because they're so eager to go out to work.

My equine coworkers come when you call them, which can't be said of many riding horses.

Draft horses were bred by farmers who literally lived under the same roof with them.
