My question is, since this is just a sensor, couldn't they have put this somewhere more accessible? I don't happen to have a car lift handy and have to jack it up, and about impossible to reach and I have long arms. I have no idea how I"m supposed to even test it, get two probes down inside the sensor I can't even see. There should at least be another place to test things like this, without having to contort your entire body underneath the car. I guess consumers just don't demand this.
Your view is right in front of the crankshaft sensor. A view from opening hood than to----> crankshaft sensor would be a HUGE help. In my Haynes(72051) sentra/200sx book, 95-99 (Shop assured me the book works for the 2002 sentra 1.8L ) its located on the front right under distributor cap of the motor.

I have 2001 nissan primera 1.8 16V. On obd it shows that camshaft sensor is not doing fine, but I found on internet that at the time nissan had that mistake because the timing chane stretch and these two sensors were not sync. Can I believe in that?

@TheSquishyMango i had to replace my cps the other day. it's located right next to the oil filter. it's probably dirty as hell and covered in gunk. you can trace it using the plug that's right next to the oil cap. look for a silver heat sleeve. it's hard to spot but easy to fix. good luck.

@richpin06a Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about tapping into the fuel pump relay but when I got my car back both of the side panels on the center console were removed, I can only assume that extra wiring there would be a dead giveaway. My reasoning for the switch on this sensor is it is extremely difficult to reach and even see without lifting the car up. Thanks again!
@jcmele01 Hello may I ask what problem you were having with your 97 GP, and also how you fixed it. I have the same car and every so often it will not start the first time or it starts but sounds weird. Thanks much.
Hello Jazzmember4life. My car was stalling and not starting properly. Several times the car would die while driving it. I found out that the crank position sensor was malfunctioning so I had to replace it ($375.00). You can actually replace it yourself if you have the tools but I didn't have the tools or the time so I had to pay. Good luck and let me know if I can further help you.

Personally I don't like testing sensors with voltmeters. Just use a good scan tool and read the RPM value from the sensor list. If you are cranking the starter and the RPM shows zero on your scan tool, you have a dead CPS.
Hey :D I was wondering, it was pretty cold here for a few days and i had to boost my car, it ran for a bit then quit. Now it won't start, it just turns over without firing. It's a 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix, will this car have a Crankshaft position sensor?
Yes, this is the latest thing to fail on my '99 SC1. If the car dies because of this sensor and you're not able to restart the car (I was able to once, thank goodness), hopefully it'll be in a spot where you can jack up the car (use jackstands) to get underneath. It's a hard-to-get-to part but thankfully it's cheap.
yes this was finally my last problem .. after solve the hitting problem ,changing water pump, coolant tap, coolant temp sensor, starter, so it still was some times stalling only the saturn dealer mechanic could see the anormal rate and he change the senor .. now i can sleep jj
hey rich i am from california dont have much money either but i hope you can help me out with a few tips. i own a 95 saturn sc1 that does not want to start. ive checked for spark and it had none at the time. i took it to a mechanic and he told me it was the ignition module so i told him to replace it. a day later it did the same thing and left me stranded, i was so pissed cause i thought the problem was fixed. it starts up some times than it dies and at times it stays on im stumped rich!
i think its the crankshaft sensor, but im not sure it leaves no codes either on the computer. maybe my mechanic is looking in the wrong places i read up and it says that sometimes the cps can test out fine but when they heat up thats when the sensor will give out. it also says that the cps triggers the the spark and fuel pump too
You are correct in thinking it could be a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor. On saturns it is very rare to have a bad ignition module when there is no spark but not the case when it comes to the crankshaft sensor.I would change out the sensor and see what happens.
thanks alot rich you saved me alot of time and frusteration! the cps was my problem it checked out fine when the car was cold but when it would heat up my car would not start.

Is there a way to get to this if I don't have a lift to get under my car?

You could remove the intake manifold but that would be a lot of work.

Yes, this is the latest thing to fail on my '99 SC1. If the car dies because of this sensor and you're not able to restart the car (I was able to once, thank goodness), hopefully it'll be in a spot where you can jack up the car (use jackstands) to get underneath. It's a hard-to-get-to part but thankfully it's cheap.

yes this was finally my last problem .. after solve the hitting problem ,changing water pump, coolant tap, coolant temp sensor, starter, so it still was some times stalling only the saturn dealer mechanic could see the anormal rate and he change the senor .. now i can sleep jj

there is no need to drain the oil by replacing the CPS ??
so then the Cam sensor will be near the biggest pulley???
I have a 1996 chevy truck. I have noticed decrease in power acceleration and a decreased in the MPG. my muffler gives me this strong gasoline smell.
I check it in autozone and the code came like this. cam sensor failed, crankshaft sensor failed, Mass airFlow sensor failed, and oxygen sensor failed.
what should I do first??

There is a fail code PO320 but they can fail without setting a code.

hey rich i am from california dont have much money either but i hope you can help me out with a few tips. i own a 95 saturn sc1 that does not want to start. ive checked for spark and it had none at the time. i took it to a mechanic and he told me it was the ignition module so i told him to replace it. a day later it did the same thing and left me stranded, i was so pissed cause i thought the problem was fixed. it starts up some times than it dies and at times it stays on im stumped rich!

i think its the crankshaft sensor, but im not sure it leaves no codes either on the computer. maybe my mechanic is looking in the wrong places i read up and it says that sometimes the cps can test out fine but when they heat up thats when the sensor will give out. it also says that the cps triggers the the spark and fuel pump too
lozantus82 3 years ago
You are correct in thinking it could be a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor. On saturns it is very rare to have a bad ignition module when there is no spark but not the case when it comes to the crankshaft sensor.I would change out the sensor and see what happens.

thanks alot rich you saved me alot of time and frusteration! the cps was my problem it checked out fine when the car was cold but when it would heat up my car would not start.
I guess thats what happends when you purchase
a non OE part from autozone LOL!

Does this sensor give off a OBD2 when it fails, or is starting to fail? If so, what generic code is it?
