  • Thanks :)))

  • I'm inspired anytime I hear Joe Zawinul.

My synths are calling me louder than ever!

    This is Music 101

  • Is that a regularly tuned g alto kalimba or treble?

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • I was at that show. The year before ZS jammed with Mavahishnus band. What memories!Epic concerts, both of them.RIP Joe.

  • Gary Poulson - guitar

  • Incredible playing by Sery on the kalimba.

  • How can you possible dislike this?

  • bilubilubilubilu blimblimblimblimblim

  • Just wow.

  • incroyable j'en suis bouche bée tout simplement :)

    J'en ai vu d'autres pourtant .....

    :)

    Thank !

  • @DjHypabeam lol. The question and answer scheme in music has been around since ancient times. It's communication.

  • Dave, you saw him 2009 ? That's interesting. He passed away in 2007 in Vienna - Austria, I treated him as a physician on parts of his last path.

  • I think most people can agree that Zawinul was the king of world music. And he was a master of bringing together amazing musicians! There hasn't been a single musican in ANY of his bands who hasn't been exceptional, and his compositions are of course up to par. Respect to the maestro!

  • I saw Zawinul in 2009 in London and felt the same as you moonlander. The concert was just mindblowing. How could any band be That Tight? RIP Joe

  • is that richard bona!?

  • @andyyyxxx

    Auf jeden Fall.

  • excellent, sublime, c'est cela que l'on recherche en musique...bravo!!!

  • Wow, WOW! The first image i had in mind when first listning to the part at 1:32 was entering heaven whie looking back at your life. Breathtaking.,

  • SANZA not Zansa lol

it's one of the names of the instrument played by Paco (it's also called mbira or kalimba)

Great post, i've seen this live so it brings back a lot of good memories :)

    Peace out

  • @Fjord76 im sure that since that word is not originally english, it could probably be spelled several ways. I've always just called it Mbira

  • @Caradepato2 no cause if u spell it 'zansa' and pronounce it right, it doesn't sound the same as if u spell it 'sanza' and it has nothin to do with that word not being originally english...by the way, i found another one: in Congo and Cameroun, it's called likembe ;)

  • "pöcökfon"

  • simply great :D

  • kool richard bona on percussion and singin

  • badass

  • It would be so easy to overplay on this type of tune, but everyone gives it just the right amount of virtuosity and musicality/taste! It is amazing! I think that is owed to Joe's vision and leadership.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I've actually been watching it regularly for about 3 yrs (around the time Joe died?) but only now have got around to commenting. I particularly love the section from 8.45 (Bimoya?). Such soulful music and such a soulful, beautiful guy.

  • the song starts out as zansa, is the part from 3:45 onward just a jam session or is it also a listed zawinul song, it sounds pretty improvised. Great stuff

  • yo paco

  • Bimoya is the second song!!!

  • Magic. But what means Joe's last motion to his wrist ? Guys, time to eat ?

  • @PhilAroundhits "time for a drink" maybe hahaha.. joe felt really bad about giving jaco some vodka to calm down before a show once.. he knew he made a big mistake

  • wow the best.

  • Paco Seeeeeeeeri!!!!!

  • Magic

  • the tone of Bona´s bass is killer or what???!!!

  • WOW

  • Paco Séry, the master! He's the best drummer no one hears about!

(dunno if that last sentence really makes sense lol)

  • Paco Sery too. He was Joe´s favorite drummer.,I find he is bloody good.

  • The bass tone of Bona is just perfect...

  • and who ever said that zawinul was no good after weather report?

  • simply put, the most basic of instruments evokes more emotion and musicality than the most complicated manmade musical electronic instrument .simply put. bravo paco!

  • 5:39 he looks like a sad puppy

  • Here's to you, Joe Z.

  • BADASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  • At the moment im standing on a crossroad and dont know if im gonna continue studie music or start an other education but when i see something like this its like: "how can i not continue with music?"

  • I'm at a similar crossroads about to start studying music and it is watching things like this that confirm it is the right decision for me

  • but you will never understand this

  • @moonlander2000 Maybe you should go back to Grammer School first and learn how to spell before you "study" anything else...

  • @passtheyemen bet your swedish isn't as good as his english.

  • @moonlander2000 Music is a gift to share and experience never give up there is room for us all be true and honest with your gift...and share it with us all

  • @moonlander2000 There is truth in your words.

I'm in the music school library as I type this. This overcomes so much of the crap you have to deal with.

  • @moonlander2000

The only question that matters is "can I imagine to make a living with something other than music?" ;) And music is often about just doing it when the possibility is there!

    Music is love!

    Have a nice week ;)

  • @moonlander2000 yes this is good stuff man. these guys are world class musicians.

  • @moonlander2000

    Never quit!

I have a Friend who decided to give up performing, and now jams with me every now and then. He just plays by HimSelf in His basement ... and He's miserable!

    Maybe You can do both!

  • Comin' out of some roger troutman.

  • j'ai vu SIXUN il y'a 4 jours, et quand Paco joue ce morceau, les petites notes de Joe manquent cruellement... (même si Joe N'a jamais joué dans Sixun...bien sur!)

  • Paco rockin the Zooba pants

  • j'aimerais trouver un DVD de ce concert !!!

  • The drummer is Paco Sery From the Ivory Coast

  • The best rhythm section is an african one :) In this case- drummer from Senegal and bass player from Cameroon. What more ? :))

  • @gr00veN1k1

Paco sery is from Ivory Coast not from Senegal

  • @gr00veN1k1 two bass players from Cameroon. The one in sunglasses is Etienne Mbappe. Now with John McLaughlin in 4th Dimension and with Su La Take.

  • behind ,,,, always !

  • who is the drummer with the mbira?

  • PACO !

  • Это полный пиздец!!!

  • What !?

  • HELL! YEAH!

    Beautiful!

  • ☼☼☼☼☼

  • They really can make GOOD MUSIC :)

  • Bass groove from hell!

  • oh yess Richard Bona !! :)

  • beautiful

  • that's the coolest instrument ever

  • Looks like Joe is having technical problems with the keys in the first 5 minutes or so. I think he's getting no sound for parts of it and the wrong sounds at others.

  • ughhhh the musicianship....

  • i would love to find out what the words mean that Joe sings. Are they phonetic or do they actually mean something? Does anybody know what they mean or the language that's used? Thanks.

  • Bimoya Bimoya Bimoya Bimoya!!!!!

  • Wish this whole North Sea Jazz Fest set was on DVD!!!!!! Can't find it anywhere!

  • 6:33 - 6:42 (hope you know what I mean :)

  • aaa Richard Bona the early years ! :) thank

  • Simply wonderful! Uplifting! Stunning! Brilliant! What more can I say! Thanks for sharing this great clip with us all!

  • is that percussionist the same one from Weather Report?

  • yes... Manolo Badrena

  • I saw Paco with his own band yesterday night on a boat in Paris, playing in front of a 50 people crowd(!)...it was maybe the 10th time in 15 years I was witnessing his genius & I was thinking there's no way to get used to it...Words cannot express how it feels to see him performing live. 8)

  • I know how you feel.

  • Young bonaaaaaaaaaaa

    amazing

  • PACO!!

    The guy is a monster.

  • Artfesti, I hear you. But give old Joe and his kinda worn out '70s synth sounds a break. The overall vibe in this video is magnificent. It's like a new day has dawned when Paco jumps on that drum kit. He's ALL OVER it. I know it's a straight four on the bass drum but God in Heaven. What a groove. The slowly rising complexity of Paco's playing on this video is a joy to hear and watch. Easily makes up for any deficiency in Zawinul's performance.

  • First of all besides his Oberheim none of his synths are from the 70's. His Korg M1 is from 1987, his wavestation from the 90's. U really don't know what you are talking about.

  • i can't believe i am hearing this! Your a dick!

  • Are fuken crazy you idiot

  • i almost agree with u totally if not for weather report..

  • Comment removed

  • google "mozart myth red ice creations robert newman" ... mozart was almost entirely a creation , yes the man did exist, but most the work attributed to him should not have been

  • what's that instrument at the beginning? It's beautiful...

    peace

  • it's a kalimba. Also called African Piano. Damn hard to play, especially like Paco Serry

  • West African musical instrument consisting of a resonating box with tuned strips of wood or metal attached to it that are plucked using the thumbs.

Called "zanza" , "thumb piano", "marimbula", "box lamellaphone".

  • de otro planeta, buenisimo

  • AMAZING!!! All the musicians are GREAT!!! Joe's band came to Greece 2 years ago, but i could't make it :((( We will miss u!!!

  • If we all would live like this we would never wanna die.....

    So long, Joe....

  • It makes me shiver, it's too good to see that kind of musicians with that humility...

and what they dare with the music is just magic

  • the type of stuff that makes u feel like ur in heaven.....bravo

  • Joe could bring the soul out of silicon chips like no-one before or since. He proved that art can be the master of technology, a lesson that this generation of silicon servants would do well to heed.

  • I agree with this.

  • Oh, come on!

Every generation produces a lot of crap and a few gems. Many crackpot musicians lived at the same time, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Schönberg, Hendrix, Davis, Zawinul and so on did. There are many fine young musicians out there. But also a lot of half deaf idiots, who think music is there to get them laid.

  • I agree with you, too.

  • what's that instrument in the beginning?

  • Kalimba, mbira, African thumb piano... lots of different names for it.

  • lol, i love the WHOLE THING. lol, the guitarist though, his body language screams "if i have to move from this spot, run."

  • Can someone tell me the album where zansa is? Thx

  • World Tour. two discs of his live stuff with the syndicate. i highly recommend it.

  • i love richard. Please come back to argentina!!!

  • Such a bunch of gifted musicians...

    God must exist!

  • i love their music

  • Incroyable! Joe went on the record saying that Paco was "The greatest drummer I played with anywhere, anytime". Thanks for posting this masterpiece.........

  • fantastic band!they are great!ethnic jazz-revelation!

  • GIMME THAT BAND!!!

  • omg

  • Are those Sonor Force 2000?

  • So cool . . amazing , timless musicians !

  • unbelievable!!!!!

I was there at the front row only watching Paco, the best drummer ever.

  • What a feeling of the Zawinfuk's musica and what a strong influence of African music!

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • simplesmente fantastico

  • a great man and was definatley a savior of music

  • We miss you Joe and Jaco!

  • Aloha Joe Zawinul and to Jaco before him.

  • Is Paco Sery playing a kalimba?

  • nah im no expert. but i believe thats a modified mbira. modified in that it doesnt seem to contain any resonators

  • Paco is playing sanza, a very common instrument in africa

  • RIP Joe and Jaco.

  • Big Z, the best of the best.

  • grazie joe, sono cresciuto con tua musica, un grande maestro un grande uomo.

  • Thank you Zawinul... Your name will always be remember...

  • R.I.P. Joe! That guy at the beggining is awesome!

  • Joe was the man. Everlasting love.

  • I love this song's African feel and rhythm!

  • kalimbas rock

  • ZANZA and Bimoya!! Thanl you!

  • NICE FODERA!!

  • Joe Zawinul was one of my helo of my life. His music nocked out my heart, and impressed the beauty and the passion of the music into my heart. I enjoyed his music through his musical beat and wave. I learned the importance of seeking something around my life from his music. Thank you for your music! Eternal music! Good by, Joe.

  • what is that little instrument called in the beginning?

  • Its a Kalimba (African thumb piano)

  • nice thanks!

  • Gruwelijk!!!

  • You idiots don't have to remind me that Joe Zawinul is dead. You should talk/listen about/to his music, instead of crying all day on youtube that he's dead. And his music didn't come straight from above, you fucking losers, it came from his heart/soul, which is part of the Soul of the World, which CONNECTS to God. God didn't create the music, give the credit to Joe Zawinul.

  • Do you have any sensitivity? Why do we have to be idiots if we love this guy's music and we believe it is heavenly. Of course it comes from him and the credits are all his....Try to read better when others write. Now who is the idiot???

  • What do you mean with ''do you have any sensibilty''? I didn't know Joe Zawinul personally (neither did anybody on youtube), so why should I be crying? The only personal thing I did get to know was Zawinul's music, and that part of zawinul is still alive and will never die... So you idiots keep crying and let me be happy...
