I like the symbolism of the nun not blessing her and walking out. As she realizes what has happened, she looks up at the crucifix on the wall. We can come directly to Christ because of His sacrifice on the cross. We do not need intermediaries or priests to give us blessings. We can go directly to Him.
@mvies77. that is one of the many reasons why i left the catholic church. i can go directly to Jesus and He is willing to receive me. His saving blood sacrifice saves all who believe in His sacrifice and not in the false sacrifice of the mass. there are many other reasons why i left the catholic church, and i am now trying to get my daughter to leave it also. the catholic church hates my username - bornagainsaint.
@bornagainsaint1 It is interesting to read in the Bible in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2, when they are all in the upper room and they are all filled with The Holy Ghost, that Mary the mother of Jesus was filled also just like everyone else. Just as human as everyone else. So happy for you. I know how hard this must be for you with family. My prayers ate with you. Blessings.
To not even give her a last blessing before she leaves is unbelievable seeing as they should be caring and charitable.AWESOME performance by Audrey of course though :-)
This last scene is stunning in all its simplicity and symbolism. I liken it, in its impact on the viewer, to the opening scene of 12 O'Clock High (when Dean Jaeger is walking through the abandoned airfield).
Wow! What a powerful last shot! I love the silence and severity of that scene, along with Audrey Hepburn's hesitation and the little hand movement as if she were still wearing her gown. Excellent film.
I wish Sister Luke's father had been alive to see this. He would have been proud.
@Chocolateluvr1987 I like the very last moment. She stops, decides on a direction. And her last steps were not hesitant at all as she walked off the screen. One of my favorite movies.
For me,Audrey Hepburn's finest performance. Her portrayal as Sr Luke was just incredible.I don't have a particularly fond memory of the nuns at my school way back in the 60s,when I was just a kid,but not all nuns are merciless harridans! Sr Luke clearly wasn't.Great to see this here.
the nuns story,,one of audreys best films,if not THE BEST. a test of obedience to the religious life, and life outside the religios community.anyone seeking such a vocational call to ordination or that which contains obedience,,should watch this superb film.
See Sister Luke run! Spread your wings and fly - fly far away from the evil penguin bitches. They would have killed your soul if you had stayed even one more day. The happy ending of this movie is the best part.
@elbnderi - The "evil penguin bitches" - it may be harsh but very ture - and as per the film here Sister Luke ran for her life from them because they were killing her soul - they were sucking the life energy right from out of her as they do to all of them.
Maybe coz I'm still learning English, I don't know wut he means. I knw that it’s not a good words
BTW, I'm not Christian; In my religion, u don't have to live only for the religion; instead, enjoy ur life to the max but within the religion boundaries.
I mean U have to practice all the basic religious rituals, obey and be kind to ur parents even if they were harsh; there is a verse in our holy book as: “Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but him, and that ye be kind to parents”
Also helping others especially poor people, orphans and woman are considered from the best deeds that a person can do. The important issue additionally is morals; “on the Day of Judgement nothing will be weightier on the scale of a believer than good morality.” (We believe that there will be a day of judgement after we die then being resurrected)
For me telling my sins for God only and only God is very important and asking him only for forgiveness are two things that keep me working and working to please him.
When I saw the movie, I really felt blessed with wut I have and wut I practice and the way I worship my God.
@elbnderi: hmmm. not really. a vocation is a call, like marriage. when you love another, nothing is too difficult, and one can be happy even in trials. sister luke found out that it was not her vocation, so she left, not because the nuns were sucking the life out of her.this is an actual story. sister luke became a nurse during the war, and all her life loved and respected and served the church, as a devout catholic, even if she was no longer in the habit.
aLL THOSE YEARS of hard work and Absolutely nothing to show for it, except for the clothes on your back. Ha ha, just like every other woman in this world. Hard Reality, but the truth is the truth.
Thank you so much for posting this film indeed. It is one of the best classics of all time. It is so true how ones battle between obedience and what is right. What has to be and what must be.

I WONDER IF SHE WENT INTO THE UNDERGROUND, OR BACK TO THE CONGO, TO BE WITH THAT DOCTOR.......

@AllieCat356 The Underground probably, during WWII it was quite impossible to reach the Congo from Occupied Belgium.

@MebefromBelgium I always thought she would eventually meet up with him. She knew where he was after all. Just the romantic in me!
