On average, Canadians live longer than Americans; on average, Canadians are healthier than Americans; all Canadians are covered, 40 million Americans or so are denied coverage. Even Canadians who rush south of the border for treatment to supposedly life-threatening tumours which turn out to be benign cysts, are covered under Canadian health care.

WTF does personal freedom have to do with medicare and social security? Medicare is insurance that at this point is necessary because private insurers do not want the burden of older citizens who incur a huge amount of medical expenses. Social Security provides a safety net for our older citizens who often CANNOT work.

Considering SS tax isn't progressive and medicare is a flat rate I don't see how they impinge on anyone's personal freedom.

There is a difference between a safety net and programs like Social Security. Food stamps are a safety net that we all pay into a little bit to help out those who need it on a short-term basis. With Social Security however, everyone is forced to pay into it in an amount that assumes that will NEED to use it. It's not a safety net. It's the government telling everyone that they don't trust our ability to manage our own retirement.

Social Security is not enough to live on, but it keeps a large portion of the population from dying on the streets after retirement. The country was very different before it was passed.
