Who cares where they stand on their beliefs it's just great music!!!! I'm 43 yr old and I've never seen it so bad that everyone worries about someone elses beliefs instead of enjoying their life and all that is offered to them. You won't go in a restaurant if they serve a menue you don't like so why do you come into these posts you don't like? Another example of someone wanting to shove their nose into a place it doesn't belong. GET A REAL LIFE and stay out of everyone elses DICKHEADS!!!!!!
i like their harder ones, keep away, i stand alone, straight out of line, cryin' like a bitch, i fucking hate u, but their soft ones arent close to my favorites, cryin' like a bitch is a fucking good ass song
@44prot while not "Satanic" or "devil worshipping," Sully Erna at least is a self-proclaimed Wiccan, and is thus a pagan. Not necessarily a bad thing by any means, just food for thought.
@dsaine19 well if that's true, it explains why the spiritually is so prevalent. Not many are more truly spiritual and speak it so clearly as those who are of the practicing Pagan traditions
Godsmack is one of the last few GREAT Heavy Metal bands and this song is a testament as to why. Man there is so many cookie cutter pieces of shit post-grunge/Hard Rock/Alternative Metal/Metalcore bands nowadays. What happened to good music whether it was alternative rock, Metal, Hard Rock etc.. this band along with Disturbed and maybe two or three others that make powerful, interesting, simple music that just happens to get on the radio when bands like A7X, and Three Days Grace are radio CRAP.
he he ha ha they have finally figured it out, a little secret that you basic third year orchestra geek knows....bass at the start of a piece sometimes it is a good thing
I have 2 sons living / dieing with Cystic Fibrosis and one son who lives with a dibiltating bone disease so this song really means a lot to me. Only because in my life of dealing with all of this I have made some mistakes along the way... So WHAT IF?
When I heard that they were steering away from their softer offerings, I was disappointed. Some of their older songs have had the lyrical qualities of 'roid rage, but Serenity was thoughtful and deep by comparison. Cryin' Like a Bitch is good, but in the roidy category, and so I thought, more of the same... but then I heard Love-Hate-Sex-Pain and What If, and I am impressed. The music is harder, the lyrics are deeper, and their effort and talent are well apparent.

why do they adapt tuning to alice in chains...? i mean are they doing their music or someone elses? i respect them being fans of that band but metallica's influence were bands that sounded nothing like metallica... kinda disrespectful
BAD ASS!!! Godsmack has always been one of my favorite bands!!! i was born in 81 and grew up on 80's metal, along with Led zepplin,DIO,Boston, heart etc......ALL of which i still listen to today! theres a handfull of bands i like from todays era....GODSMACK being Number 1!!!!! FUCKING EPIC SONG AND EPIC ALBUM!
I totally agree with you serws. I don't even want to taint this page with any more talk of that abomination. It's a pretty close race for which one I like more, this or the new Bullet For My Valentine album Fever, I defanently reccomend checking it out!
can't lie TheWhodey5150, nirvana shouldn't be on that list at all, period. How dare you compare godsmac, zep, sabbath to that of the mucus that nirvana hocked out of their mouth and called music...
Wasn't a big fan of Love-Hate-Sex-Pain, but this is some pretty good shit right here. To me this song seems like it took a little more time, energy, and thought. Godsmack, for me, is just one of those bands that you have to pick apart and create your own playlist based on what you like, because in most of their albums they have songs that are played in different mind frames. Except "Faceless," that album was pretty monotone.
this song is ok, only 3 songs of this one i even like the instrumental being favorite. I wish they would have grown the style more but its kinda the same mix of the first and second cd. which had they never been released would be a different story but they were so idk...i had always hoped they become more tribal metal and be really different.
There new albums is amazing love all the tracks. I don't feel this band gets as much attention as they deserve. The bassist is very talented. The bass intro to the song is pretty damn awesome.
Re: MonsterMetalMusic I live in the Boston area and he was on the local Rock station here WAAF doing an interview and the DJ asked him about this song and he said its about the thoughts he was having trouble with back in '05 even before they produced IV and he said it was a journal entry he formed into a song
@MonsterMetalMusic I live in the Boston area and he was on the local Rock station here WAAF doing an interview and the DJ asked him about this song and he said its about the thoughts he was having trouble with back in '05 even before they produced IV and he said it was a journal entry he formed into a song
@MonsterMetalMusic 107.3 WAAF in Boston,MA had Sully on for a interview. He took over the station for about an hour to showcase Oracle....When the song came up. Mike Hsu, the DJ at the time asked him the question. Sully said yes and that not even the band knew.
@DiesIrae1102 The band more or less knew what was troubling him as he said they have a very open relationship with one another. when he was in this dark place in 2005 that he talks about being in even before they produced IV he was strongly considering walking away and just being a father to Skyler. However, its not like any one would blame him for choosing that over music but it was his love of being in the band that made him come back .
@MonsterMetalMusic Listen to the lyrics. It's all in there....talks about making tough choices early on, success, (assumed)animosity within the band, and asking if he would do alright beyond Godsmack. I haven't read anything about this though, but it seems to me he's either talking about leaving the band, or his wife!
@MonsterMetalMusic To be honest I think hes right, the chorus says stuff like "What if I leave could I still breath? And if I leave could I be me?" Your boys are your life right? And also the intro "Been disconnected for so long." And also the bit... "I lost all hope along the way." All a bunch of feelings..
I think Godsmack's The Oracle album is great, but the best is Awake and Faceless I think. Its only my opinion. Godsmack isn't worse than when they started.
@Evilshorns13 yeah i knew that one of my local radio stations had a radio take over with god smack and sully talked about what this meant it was very interesting and well just cool !!!
@Evilshorns13 I dun think Sully thought about leaving the band, I believe he was talking about the length of time it took to finally create another album...NO Sully, NO Godsmack, just don't think dats possible!!!!
@cyberinch Google the interview he did with WAAF during a radio take over where the DJ asks him where this song "what if" came from and he talks about why he wrote it and frankly if he wanted to leave for the reasons he stated in the interview his daughter Skyler being one of them hey more power to him.
@MaryShagrath It really was something he was strongly considering, Sully was in a very dark place in 2005 this song "what if" was written back before they produced IV and said it was originally a private journal entry but once the guys saw it they encouraged him to put it on the next album.
@DonkeySyrup I agree 100% but this song isn't about a girl or about such long breaks in between albums like some think it is. After all its not so much the other guys in the band as it is Sully who wants the breaks I mean the guy has a daughter he wants to be around and hes exploring other types of music with his solo album and hes a huge poker enthusiast. Godsmack may be the one of the greatest things in his life but he doesn't want it to be the only thing in his life.
hell yeah!!! \m/ welcome back Godsmack!!! :D I pretty much gave up on them after IV, I was so disappointed, but this song is pretty damn awesome. Still not as good as their stuff on Awake, but even though they're not my fav band anymore, I have to credit them with being my gateway band into metal since now I listen to Lamb Of God and Tool, and I will still be buying this album after hearing this song!!! <3
Even this band is at 2nd place (right behind Disturbed) for me, I'm not satisfied with their new material. Their possibilities are way beyond this ... I expected something new ... maybe experimental things. Don't get me wrong, I will listen these songs but ... This was already seen in their previous records. They said that this will be their biggest, heavy record with no 'serenity-s'. Naaaaaaat!
IV was an immense album, and i will have to hear the whole of Oracle to see if they have topped it, which they have done on every album up to that point , as the album isn't getting a UK release, i will have to import it sadly :-(
sick song its awesome

Talent at it's finest.
Definitely the most mis-labeled, misunderstood bands around.
There is nothing "Satanic" or "devil worshipping " about this band .
On the contrary, their lyrics scream of spirituality, if anything. A perfect example of being judged by a "name" alone.
I appreciate, respect and admire!! They are a gift to anyone who will stay opened.

@Evilshorns13 no no no no no no no no no..
it's impossible!
He wouldn't write it about leaving the band, cause it's a greatest part of his life
MaryShagrath 1 year ago
@MaryShagrath It really was something he was strongly considering, Sully was in a very dark place in 2005 this song "what if" was written back before they produced IV and said it was originally a private journal entry but once the guys saw it they encouraged him to put it on the next album.

@Evilshorns13 dude if sully leaves I'll be pissed. Godsmack isnt Godsmack without his voice.
DonkeySyrup 1 year ago

Naaaaaaat!

@MAGGOTmedia They experimented on their last album, and look how fans reacted to that. Just saying, people are never pleased.

the ultimate question my friends.....
what if!!

IV was an immense album, and i will have to hear the whole of Oracle to see if they have topped it, which they have done on every album up to that point , as the album isn't getting a UK release, i will have to import it sadly :-(
