Yah! I'm going to have to come round the shop and check it out. i did a pine chest, first one I have done and it looks cris! I should have done a video....
@GoGopinkGoGo with a paint brush you'll ahieve a much different look, a roller might be a better way to do it if you don't have a spray gun. If it's a small piece of furniture try a spray can of paint.
great work...i like the style with the white paint over the old darker paint i'm not familiar with the name of the technic...i would really like to try adjusting an animal print on wooden chair with a contrasting lighter color on the fabric...i think that would look interesting
Watching this I nearly died. You paint beautiful old antiques to make them look the exact same as things that are being made this year?
Antiques were often made from super high quality timber that is now rare, not available for purchase and hugely expensive. The time taken to make a piece involved a lot of hard work. Yes I like the finished product (if it wasn't so beautiful to start with) but to see what was a beautiful timber covered in black paint killed me.
@oosyaoo you'll be happy to know that, although the night stand might have appeared to be a beautiful antique, it was actually made in like the 70's maybe 80's. and the top was veneer over partical board. it certainly wasn't a high quality antique to begin with.
@flaxenhairedgirl I do actually like the look, just not when someone destroys what was a beautiful timber piece to begin with [Which happens far too often]. But thats not what happened here (I have been since told it was a simple veneer piece so it's all good)
I realize you use Valspar paint from Lowes, but is it a flat, semi gloss, etc? What color was the black you painted the cabinet? You do wonderful work.
@googo151 I use Valspar paint from Lowes. TSP is a cleaning product used to prepare surfaces for paint, you can get it a Lowe's too or any other hardware store.
@googo151 tsp is short for tri sodium phosphate . it is a haevy duty cleaner found in paint stores . comes in powder/crystal form which is mixed with water and some times ready to use form
@googo151 It is a product you use to take off any wax, grime remaining on the piece. It is a real good idea to not skip that step because paint may not stick and in fact crackle if there's anything like that left on the piece. Another thing to remember is that your new finish is only as good as the finish that is underneath it. So, you want to do everything you can to deal with the old finish before you put the new finish on.
why by furniture to make it look beat up and old???

@alchemyfineliving Oh thats good to hear, keep up with the good work.
You just see/hear of way too many cases where a priceless and beautiful antique had been painted over to not be so suspicious.

@alchemyfineliving Oh, cool, You didn't seem like the type to ruin a perfectly good antique. Nice work!

@oosyaoo The distressed shabby Vintage look isn't for everyone...
But there are a lot of us that do love the beauty in the imperfections.
Alchemyfineliving, Tim Holtz would approve! <3

Would you only put the bees wax on top or all over?
ceprmi 6 months ago
I'm completely inspired! Do you put any final coat on?
klaneintd 7 months ago
@klaneintd Sometimes I'll put wax on. I like to use a bees wax made by Howards.

Can this be done without the TSP step?

@dawglver56 I usually use a satin or semi-gloss finish. I'm sorry, but I don't remember what color I used for the black cabinet.
