IMO Captain American was pretty good. Like you said, some of the editing was a bit...harsh...but overall it was pretty enjoyable, especially considering that most of the characters are (by design) pretty one-dimensional.
It'll be interesting to see what Joss Whedon does with the Cap'n, and the rest of the Avengers. I like most of Whedon's work, but I'm not sure how he's gonna pull of an epic super hero movie. Could be glorious, or a horrible disaster. Either way, I'll be seeing it for sure! :)
...over Red Skull. And Tommy Lee as Tommy Lee with some nice one-liners mixed in. The theme song produced a nice adrenaline rush, no complaints. Biggest issue: The middle storyline about a chorus line boy who rescues the remnants of the 107th battalion from the clutches of Hydra with no training whatsoever...suspension of belief my a**. Still an earn it, and the connections to the larger Marvel Universe were mostly subtle...Cheers!
@99Mohican We talked about the suspension of disbelief too. It was really stupid how he was called "Captain America' and then all of a sudden... he actually held the RANK OF CAPTAIN. I get what you're saying about no training. Maybe it was in the serum. Like the Matrix! ha ha
@ReelSchool It seems the first part of my review did not go through. Not as impressed by Hugo Weaving's performance; the accent rocked but he did not take many risks and Red Skull was too 'pretty' (possible?) and unconvincing. I thought the romance between Evans and Atwell was smokin'. I also enjoyed Tucci (accent aside), McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, and Natalie Dormer (Anne Boleyn returns!)...perhaps Captain America's victory here (saved by the bell!?) was more impressive than his victory...
@99Mohican Totally agree. I love McDonough (ever since TinMan) but the supporting characters were not supported at all) I think with Weaving, the not taking chances wasn't really his fault (since the character itself was so one dimensional) So really... the being 'too pretty'... nothing could be done.
you give such funny and detailed reviews and I can tell you love what you do. Your enthusiasm for blockbusters entices me to want to watch them more often (though I swore Iron Man 2, Fantastic 4 and Dare Devil were the last straws). After watching your earlier Reel School vids, I'd be interested in what you'd bring to a non-blockbuster. It might not get you the views, but perhaps some well deserved street cred.
@3DAzrael THanks Sean! I'd like to think that's true... although, it's been awhile since I've seen a prestige picture, or an independent IN theatres. But I love the idea... and accept your mildly worded challenge!
I get that since Dr. Zola had the power of the cube, he could build his inventions, but why couldn't the Captain and Bucky be jumping onto a train that looked more like it was from the 1940s. And what was with the leather fetish uniforms? Why couldn't costumers use wool materials and a Schutztaffel uniform design, more charactered to the traditional WWII uniforms? However, I loved Captain America's origin, as well as Winter Soldier's. I can't wait to see how these characters develops.
I wasn't a huge fan of this one. I definitely felt the same about the editing and thought because of the montages, the final battle between the Captain and Red Skull was less than climactic. Captain America was lacking in a struggle he needed to overcome, both with the Red Skull and with his self-identity. Also, the love interest with Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter was vitually non-existent. But my biggest pet peave was the science fiction-y costumes and sets, maybe I'm just a history prude
