I remember taking a family vacation to Toronto (I am from Michigan) and we tried to arrange one of the "public tours" through the CBC studios... for some reason they wouldn't give us a tour!
Canada is still an amazing place to be... really hoping someday I can see Toronto again. Watching this makes me reminiscent.
@gladfan1989 Yes, for us Canadians, the Gemini Awards are like our equivalent the Emmys, gladfan1989. But I recall that last year's ceremony was hosted by an American, Cory Monteith, the guy who is currently Finn on "Glee".
When I was growing up in Washington, Pa., I listened to CBC's Toronto (740), Montreal (940) and Windsor (1550) stations until they signed off at 1am, and they played O Canada. Now CBL Toronto is now 99.1 FM (while Moses Znaimer has taken over AM 740), CBM is no longer and I don't know if there's CBC Radio in Windsor. So much for progress....With CBC radio I still remember Booktime, Mostly Music and Variety Tonight with Vicki Gabbareau. Thx to Youtube and the 'net, I can learn more about the CBC!
@Oldkt I remember one from the 80's that had guards raising the Canadian flag up the pole for the sign-on which also showed shots of the main offices while the usual tech. info is heard.
Not exactly, the two networks carry very different programming. SRC operates a completely different program schedule from CBC. Radio-Canada still practices sign-offs while CBC went 24-hour in October 2006. English and French Canadians have very different tastes in programming. Radio-Canada tends to be more artistic and CBC more American-style.
On cable in the Peterborough area, CBLT's transmitter shutdown was often followed by whatever CHRO Pembroke (also Ch. 5) was airing at that hour, usually The Bars & Tone Show.
Yeah, it's surprising how powerful CHROs transmitter is. In Belleville, WWNY Watertown's transmitter shutdown was usually followed by whatever was on WKBW Buffalo or CIII-TV-7 Midland (the latter only in the summer). WKBW would usually have a movie, or infomercials. As for CIII-TV-7 Midland.....well sometimes Global had a comedy show or movie.
i watched this cbc signoff when i was 3 years old in 2006.

@89990000 Course in the past it probably went under the "CBC 5" or "CBC Toronto" branding as well since it all comes out of CBLT in Toronto anyway.

Now this is the sign-off I remember! I used to stay up nights just to see this. Too bad that CBC can't even be assed to do it properly anymore.

Are the Gemini awards like the Emmys here in America?

1. What tíme does R-C close transmission?
2. I don't understand it when you said that the SRC is more "artistic" and the CBC is more "American style".

@sygo7g I caught that once during a DX opening back in '98.
The Windsor version had a tape roll as the satellite flew into the center of the frame.

Yes, they are the Canadian equivalent of PBS (although they have advertising).
