People want be famous for the same reason Authors, Musicians, artists, and actors want an audience... to be heard. (Though the author and artist thing can possibly be done with less publicity).
I tought about why I would want to be famous and I came up with this
1. Being significant
Just having an effect in the world, do something you feel is important and also be remembered after your death and not just stop being important to the world when all the people that personally knew you are dead
2. Being liked
People like to be liked. And if there are thousands of people that like you won't that make you feel special?
also I believe it has something to do with being one of a kind.
They want to feel superior to most of society and they feel the best way to do that is to have a fanbase.
2. They want to be remembered after they die.
This correlates a bit with TFiOS.
Admittedly, most people who want to be remembered after they die aren't deserving of such fame, and many people who should be remembered after they die aren't.
I think it's basically the universal need to be loved . . . on steroids. Yes, that is unforgivably corny, but I think it's true. People want to be loved (or idolized, or looked up to, or simply thought of) by as many people as possible, as strongly as possible, so they feel like their life has meaning.
Hmmm... I'd say the incentive is narcissism. Every person is at the center of their own world, and those with large egos (which I think does include some supposedly nice and introverted people, too) think that... it's supposed to be like that. Fame reinforces and satisfies the notion that, yes, the universe does revolve around you.
The appeal of fame, and the reason why people want to be locked in a massive, weird house with cameras on them 24/7, forced to live with other narcisistic personalities that have obviously been carefully chosen to clash with their own, and cause the biggest spectacle possible, can be summed up in two words...
EASY MONEY
You get rich, but you don't actually have to work for it.
Oh and believing that the creator of the universe communicates to you through a 2000 year old book and will send you to a horrible place filled with fire if you so much as think about boning your neighbors wife but he loves you?!?!?! That's not stupid at all.
People want to be famous because they want to be remembered. In your new book you talk about coming to terms with the fact that in a few generations many of us won't be remembered. This being a hard fact to deal with, many of us strive for the easiest way to be remembered: to be famous.
Help? My tribe is trying to gain Federal Recognition and I would appreciate if you could go onto the website* and sign the petition It ends DECEMBER 1ST !

We want to be famous because we want to participate in the immortal. We want to believe that after we die our lives will matter to someone. And in that way, we believe that we will derive meaning from our lives. Unfortunately, we believe that fame gives our lives meaning... when really it should be that one achieves fame for giving life meaning. The people who give life meaning ought to be models of how to live happily. The way it is now is hallow and backward.... and really sad.
I just brought Ellen hardcastle and This machine pwns noobs, like, yesterday. I've been listening to them for ages. Finally back to watching every vlogbrother video in order. :P
mostly people just want to be remembered, to be known for something. but these people are not willing to work hard enough to get famous through good reputation and hard work, so the smart/lucky ones get creative, and the rest get stupid. im not saying this is true for all media folk, but every day it gets easier to get your 15 minutes of fame for nothing more than being willing to do something impressively idiotic on camera, and the sad, forgotten people are falling over their own feet to get it
I think that why we want to become famous is like why we Colin wanted to 'matter'. We want to live imprints on the world, we don't want to be lost in the oblivion of time. And even though becoming a reality show star is an awful way to do this, it's an accesible way.
Money. Lawyers may make more money than TV show contestants, but it takes approx 8 years to become a full-fledged lawyer & then several years on top of that to make good money. That takes brains, determination & commitment. To get on to most reality TV shows or whatnot, it takes forms & an audition tape. If you fail, you can do it again next year. Easy money, really.
I think that the desire to be famous might be a part of the urge that us humans have to make an impact on the world and be remembered, they want this so much that they are willing to alienate the people who matter for recognition they desire, the reason that you might not understand this, John, may be because you ARE famous, please correct me if im wrong, when i wrote this there were 201,697 views, that has to be some measure of fame
In the highly unlikely event of you reading this, DFTBA
@vlogbrothers, I think that people want to be famous because they have so many misconceptions of fame. Not many people know that lawyers make more money than the starts of TLC. I didn't know that until I saw this video. But I think it's that people want to be important. Like Colin, they want to matter, but sometimes in a singularly shallow way. They like the idea of someone they've never heard of or imagined knowing and and imagining them.
This video is ~1.5 years old but I couldn't help responding. I think the premise that fame causes unhappiness is wrong. There are lot of famous people who are perfectly happy with their lives, we just don't hear about it because that doesn't make good news. I think it's more likely that unhappy people become famous and we notice their unhappiness because their fame makes it newsworthy. Correlation does not imply causation. I think the incentive to be famous is centered around the primal instinct of humans to be wanted. Think about it. Which demographic do you most often hear of wanting to be famous? Young girls. Which demographic often has self-esteem and confidence issues? Young girls do. Those who want to be famous want to be loved and noticed.
People don't like to be forgotten after they die, and then when they're alive you can't live a good life having all of your money come from a failing career. Music, acting, and other things like that don't get you much money without becoming famous, and those people want to do that. Which means they want to be famous... And for painters, even most of the famous ones have a very little amount of money.......
I'm a bit late on the answer but I think that people since the beginning of time haven't wanted to be forgotten. People live their lives worrying that after a few generations nobody will remember who they were. So if they see anyway to have an impact on anyone's life they jump at the chance. And let's be honest, would you want to be forgotten?
SUPER LATE but imho it's the sense ,even though it's false, that you are loved by millions. The problems that come along are usually abstract before you are in them. It's only when you are actually in serious trouble that you realize that fame isn't the solution. At least that's my take on it.
I enjoy watching videos on the vlogbrothers channel page and then refreshing after 10 min or so to see how many new nerdfighters have subscribed. :) Last time I checked was 10 new subscribers in 15 min :)
Personally, I think that the reason people obsess with fame is because a lot of people rely on other people for their self image, and they assume that the more people think they're amazing the more amazing they must actually be.
I think it is mostly self-medicating a severe inferiority complex. "I am totally worthless so people should know who I am so I don't feel so worthless."
It's our insatiable need for love. That's what I think anyway. The desire to be loved and valued and accepted by hundreds of thousands of people. At least, when I fantasize about fame I think that's what I want. I want people to know me and recognize me and be like, "Hey, you're that awesome person." So I'd really rather have the kind of fame that you and Hank have than what Lindsy Lohan or Brittany Spears has.
As someone who has BPD your comments that fame leads to BPD pissed me off just a bit. Well okay - a lot. Next time you talk about a mental illness that already has the crushing weight of peoples judgement and stigma attached to it can it not be in response to a rant about media hoaxes and fame?
Maybe it's just me, but I think we seek fame to bring meaning to our honsetly meaningless existence. Billions of people exist in this world and people die every second, only to be remembered by their friends and family, who in time will also die. Those who are famous are the ones who will live on in the minds of the many long after they are gone.
The reason to be famous is that most people are obsessed with attention, and they will go crazy if ignored, but others just have crazy awesome skills and they are forced to wear the crown, whilst the first group are jumping through hoops to even gently nudge the crown of fame, and fall into a pit of obscurity
People want to be famous because it means popularity and being liked by bajillions of little peoples who are not famous. And yes, bajillion is so a number. Do not deny thy number.
Not to be giant squid of anger, but it would be more awesome if you didn't class borderline personality disorder and ass-hattery in the same category. I BPD is a major world suck causing thing, but it's also I really complicated disease. DFTBA
@reviquadfive exactly! that's what i was thinking! like, ok if there was a boy in thant thing, then it'd be down in like 30 secods already or it wouldn't be able to take off at all. And another i thought was really dumb, was that the news people found a video of the heene family actually sending up the ballon because the family was dumb enough to actually video tape their own evidance that it is a hoax.
@triplequeen I know, i agree!! these people are desperete attention seekers, they were on the Tv show "Wife swap" twice, and Made this balloon thingy, for the insane purpose of pretending there kid was in it just soo the whole nation would have there eyes on the story and attention on them, pathetic!
because thats the kind of world we live in today an't it sad when being "cool*" is the most important thing to people. logic form a young person! isn't it fun when a young person has better logic than an adult such as balloon boy's dad.
*aka not nice people cool people are mean to nerdfighters and nerds that arn't nerd fighters because they haven't heard about it.
some people have to do crazy things for people to listen. who fault is it really. i tryied the right nothing. but hey what gets your dickhard ,stroke it and die (that life in nutshell)
I hate to say it, but now that i think about it, that dad sounds like a Star Trek Nerd! or at least he's trying to be...
Seriously? Xindi Reptilian + shapeshifting Suliban + Hillary Clinton = government control conspiracy?? I don't even think the Romulans could pull that one off!
"the secret Kabaal of Reptilians" reminds me of Star Trek Enterprise (the NX01 one, with Archer). Although there's nothing in common between the Suliban and the Xindi, thats a hilarious reference :)
Personally, I like their videos and this one was particularly funny. I think it's probably the most intelligent thing on YouTube and I know I'll get heaps of replies with people ranting at me so don't even bother.
@MazeleyFanClub I know you posted this a year ago, but I'm going to reply anyway. The vlogbrothers started out as just two brothers communicating via youtube vlogging. It's not like they sat down one day and were like, "Hey, you know what we should do? Become famous youtube vloggers." You can't predict this kind of fame. The same goes with John as an author. He loves to write. So he wrote some books that happened to be really good and that became well-known.
I think they would just like to be talked about. Also they might not want to be a lawyer because of going to law school etc. and they best way to get cash in their minds is to get famous. - the other John
Now the people who believe in Reptilians and the cabal think you're a part of it.
Just sayin'
The best part of the whole balloon boy hoax were those initial reports that kept saying, "we're not sure what's going on, but we'll stay with it until we do."
Just goes to show you why I don't typically watch the news on any kind of regular basis.
he did nothing wrong I support him for building the balloon and would support him again. Screw the facist judges and prosecutors and thug US cops and idiot american public who want to kill everybody.
LOL. My ex-boyfriend always calls me up and lectures me on the Reptilians. I just go "mmhm, uh huh, I see your point." There's a reason he's my EX >_>

And another i thought was really dumb, was that the news people found a video of the heene family actually sending up the ballon because the family was dumb enough to actually video tape their own evidance that it is a hoax.

Asshat-ery! Ahahahaha I love that, new favourite word!

I think it's human nature to want to be popular, so it's natural to want to be famous (which is like being super-popular)
Also, people think fame will bring them respect and recognition. However, I don't think anyone will respect this guy faking his son's death.
triplequeen 1 year ago

TheAwesomedudeboy 2 years ago
I hate to say it, but now that i think about it, that dad sounds like a Star Trek Nerd! or at least he's trying to be...
Seriously? Xindi Reptilian + shapeshifting Suliban + Hillary Clinton = government control conspiracy?? I don't even think the Romulans could pull that one off!
ArchetypeGotoh 2 years ago
"the secret Kabaal of Reptilians" reminds me of Star Trek Enterprise (the NX01 one, with Archer). Although there's nothing in common between the Suliban and the Xindi, thats a hilarious reference :)

Personally, I like their videos and this one was particularly funny. I think it's probably the most intelligent thing on YouTube and I know I'll get heaps of replies with people ranting at me so don't even bother.

Aren't you trying to be famous by having a famous youtube blog
MazeleyFanClub 2 years ago
@MazeleyFanClub I know you posted this a year ago, but I'm going to reply anyway. The vlogbrothers started out as just two brothers communicating via youtube vlogging. It's not like they sat down one day and were like, "Hey, you know what we should do? Become famous youtube vloggers." You can't predict this kind of fame. The same goes with John as an author. He loves to write. So he wrote some books that happened to be really good and that became well-known.

i want to be famous.
My goal is to one day google my name and read my wiki page only to see how theres all this information no one should no about me.
I want to be a writer. Once my google goal is complete, i want to write scripts for video games...only if im good.

I think they would just like to be talked about. Also they might not want to be a lawyer because of going to law school etc. and they best way to get cash in their minds is to get famous. - the other John
johnzsinferno 2 years ago
Now the people who believe in Reptilians and the cabal think you're a part of it.
Just sayin'
The best part of the whole balloon boy hoax were those initial reports that kept saying, "we're not sure what's going on, but we'll stay with it until we do."
Just goes to show you why I don't typically watch the news on any kind of regular basis.
regularguy5mb 2 years ago
he did nothing wrong I support him for building the balloon and would support him again. Screw the facist judges and prosecutors and thug US cops and idiot american public who want to kill everybody.
