I,(Synthaholic45) do not listen to "corporate music","Mainstream music", Top of the Pops,Etc...Eventhough Level 42 was/is @ points in their career "Top 40", I still followed their development as a great band. My comments about Mark's solo, comes from a schooled musician,(Electric Bassist to be x-act) To me it's just a Blinding speed freak-show of notes. No rhyme or reason or theme to hold it together. I like his "basslines" but the solo's are "bippity,bippity,ba@worp speed.

Mark really didn't get the full recognition he deserves in the USA for being a true master of the Bass guitar. I hear about Flea or Victor or Les quite a bit or the Slap happy bassist of the year. But Mark King should really get what's due him in the pantheon of Bass gods. His fingerlines as as fluid as any saxophone. His vocals are right on and his thumbing...well, you just saw it, didn't you?

Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, John Entwistle, Mark King, even Bootsy Colins not to mention Vic Wooten.

Slap Bass grew up in the early 70's and was pushed aside by synth bass and sampling by the late 80's.

. It is making a come back but there are many exponents of the craft. I salute Flea for bringing it into the rock genre in the early 90's and making it "funky.

Flea almost certainly got his influence from the earlier pioneers of the style.

A few things:

This is NOT the Jazz Cafe - it's Reading Concert Hall.

The crowd are like that because of VERY over-zealous security. As soon as ANYONE tried to get up and dance they were told to sit down or they'd be removed.

I know this as I was there on the balcony! Also, the bass didn't sound as 'clicky' as this in reality - dunno what's happened in the DVD mix.

Lastly, to all those saying Mark King/Level 42 aren't funky - view another clip or two of them, then make your mind up!
