  • She looks like Mandy Moore

  • Lol so many funny scenes xD 'tis a shame indeed it wasn't credited for its greatness.

  • One of Mel Brook's lesser known movies, but overall, it's a minor classic. I love it.

  • He also was hot in Dracula ( 1979 ) and almost got a Oscar nod for Diary of a Mad Housewfie.

  • russian version is way better than american one :) and im sure every eastern-european would agree with me :) this one seems a bit unrealistic.. no wonder its made by americans ;D no american will ever understand the real russian culture. same goes with dostojevsky, tolstoj.. - american ecranisations of some of their books are just terrible.. :)

  • @Nutle159 : No one fucking cares about Russian culture we care about fucking up your culture.

  • langella is a beast.

  • hahahahahhahahahahahhahahahhahahaha!!!!great scene!!!

  • In our (russian) movie Ostap is a older than he should be, so langella is a good choice here

but certainly no foreigner can understand and play Ostap's character without knowing Russia's reality of those days

  • Bender looks like Han Solo from Star Wars :DD

  • Bender looks like Han Solo from Star Wars :DD

  • i saw this movie in history class yesterday :P

  • Langella was at the height of his physical attractiveness here. This is really a very good movie and quite amusing. Langella is a terrific actor, so accomplished in both theater and on film. He looks distinguished today but back in the day he was absolutely gorgeous!

  • @Osonice1 GTFO. The bes movie is with Archil Gomiashvili.

  • Saw this in history.

    Loved it.

  • The version of Leonid Gaidai is most better!

  • wow, i didn't know this exists. there two russian "the 12 chairs", they are both hilarious (especially the one with Mironov as Ostap Bender in it), and always my favorite films. i think i should get this one somewhere to watch.

  • Frank Langella is kind of tall.. 1.93m

  • OY! What a Sexy man Langella is!

  • is that suppouse to be Ostap Bender "12 Chairs"? bravo

  • Yes, a pretty, young man, like Ilf and Petrow described him. Only the clothes are different. ;-)

  • Frank's gay.

  • That's a good movie. The best one is by Leonid Gaidai but that one is also very entertaining. And it's only loosely based on the book. Ostap Bender don't begs.

  • Completely underrated film. Among Mel's greatest films. PLUS Frank Langella was just gorgeous!!!!

  • I really wish someone would upload the intro song.

  • Hi all, with all the great Mel Brooks films this great film never made it? As someone else posted this film was so underrated, shamefull.

  • Frank Langella was so incredibly fine. I remember having such a crush on him when this movie came out and I was 10.

  • This was such a good movie! Mel Brooks is such a wonderful actor and producer.

  • This film is great, yeah, it's definitely underrated.

  • russian version vas better

  • i'm agree. this version is so terrible!!!!!!((((

  • Which one of the russian versions do you like more?

  • the one directed by Leonid Gaidai.

  • It's my favorite too. For me, Leonid Gaidai is the best director in Russia. His version tells the story and is entertaining an the same time. For me, it's in every way the best movie version of the novel.

But Mel Brooks' version has something special. It tells an own story with a few lines from the book.

  • I think, the best Ostap Benders until this day are Archil Gomiashvilli, Sergej Yurski (he didn't acted in the 12 Chairs but in the Golden Calf), Reynaldo Miravalles (from Las Doce Sillas, his character was called Oskar, but based on Ostap Bender) and Frank Langella.

  • @pyrstpyrstlovelove Russian version came out a year later. Like in anything else, russians had to out-do americans. Too bad for them, americans had an original idea ;-)

  • @Queenohrts I don't think so, Gaidai's version has a story based more accurate on the, also russian, novel than any other movie version and it quotes more than others. In Mel Brooks' movie, many scenes from the book were changed or weren't insert. Also in the novel there is no character named Sobinski (in the book it's monteur Menshikov). So I think, the russians and the american made this movies independently from each other.

  • @04279 I do agree that Russian movie was made to be better and closer to the text of the book you read. You see, Mel Brooks (who happens to be American) does not speak Russian all that well, and I dont believe ever lived in Soviet Union. Considering all that, and the fact that his movie was made for American audience (not Soviet), and came out in 1970 (before the soviet movie of 1971), did quite well.

  • @Queenohrts You're right, but that point is: I understood your comment like the russian tried to beat the american by doing a better Ilf-and-Petrov-movie and I don't think, they wanted to.

And yes: Mel tried to make the story understandable for the americans, also with some soviet clichès like Lenin statues, the International, balalaikas, the village houses, the accent, the "Marx, Engels, Lenin and ... Street" or soviet slogans like "Do your business and leave" (also an Ilf-and-Petrov-Story)

  • I love this film. The best Ostap I ever seen.

And happy end of course interesting.

  • A wonderful under rated film. Love it. Ron Moody is just fabulous in this this.

  • Thanks! I really love this movie!
