It's awesome, but math metal makes my head hurt just like math does. I usually go grab a beer when bands play such brainy music. I like my guitar with 6 strings, my bass with 4 strings and my songs with a handful of yummy repetitive riffs changing every 4 measures, with a nice groove I can sink my teeth into. My exception would be Opeth. They have enough melody to keep me interested, although I still go grab a beer when they start playing. Not hating, just saying. Who moshes to math? \m/
@ultimatemetalfreak haha its weird man cause your description of "songs with a handful of yummy repetitive riffs changing every 4 measures, with a nice groove I can sink my teeth into" is pretty much exactly why I love Meshuggah. I have always felt that their repetitiveness and grooviness is why they are so great. Check out their newest song called "Do Not Look Down" you might see what I mean.
@Wafflesaurus In any of their songs from chaosphere(except for one part in "sane") all the way to obzen you can hear a "pulse" (usually tomas playing the cymbals). The pulse is the quarter note, so if you can find the first quarter note of any song and just count 1 2 3 4, you will find that all of the odd timed riffs will line up in 2,4,8 or more measures of 4/4. The riffs are made up of chunks of 16th note patterns or triplet patterns that run along side the 4/4 timing.
@Wafflesaurus The song "Sane" starts out in 4/4, has a long 7/8 section in it followed by a 9/4 section, leading into the outro which is 4/4 again. I think the album Destroy Erase Improve is mostly in 4/4 but I don't own that one so I'm not too sure. Condradictions Collapse has quite a few odd time signatures in it.
@Wafflesaurus Your welcome! It's very complicated at first, but you'll get the hang of it, I would say start off trying to count 1-2-3-4 to songs like Lethargica (actually there is one measure of 5/4 in Lethargica that I forgot to mention, but it is very subtle, it's used as a transition into the second verse.) Nebulous is a good song to practice it on too, once you get the hang of it then Meshuggah actually becomes very basic.
@Som1onu2be what, are you assuming they're not capable of that or what? and who the hell cares about headbanging when it comes to meshuggah? just enjoy it, or isn't that "metal enough" for you?
@MYM0NK3YD13D Okay, you're obviously just trying to start a little internet fight. Umm, I never said anything about them not being "metal enough". I am a musician as well, so I really don't care about looks. Don't assume stupid things. I just said I wanted to see them do it. It's a LIVE video. So yes, I want to SEE something too. If I wanted to listen to music, I would have played the CD. Have a good one.
@MYM0NK3YD13D your a fucking douchebag. sorry to jump into someone else's arguement like this, but i kinda have to. the guy said he wants to see them in headbang, your coming up with shit saying he recons "theyre not metal enough"? wow.
@MYM0NK3YD13D Jesus Fucking Christ, why is everyone so on edge these days? If somebody said they'd like to see the sun shine on a summer day there would always be somebody going "What's that supposed to mean? Are you implying that the almighty Sun is not capable of shining on a summer day or what? HOW FUCKIN' DARE YOU?"
These guys rock.. I love the way the bassist and second guitarist headbang totally synched together on every live concert i've seen here on youtub from them. Its like they are total bros while Fredrik is on his own side doing the same but not having the same feeling of bro-ness with shaved Jens. xD Ahh it is great.
like if you got goosebumps

Apparently all their stuff is in 4/4 time. Can someone clarify?

@Wafflesaurus Polyrhythms, dude.

@Wafflesaurus Listen to the drums in the first riff of the song "Lethargica". Particularly the crash cymbal and snare hits.
