Why is he using tools at all? Once you pick up a tool, you've made the Faustian bargain (which by the way, worked out well for Faust in the end -- he went to heaven).
Humans produce technology. If technology is not a stable way to exist, then nature/god/randomness screwed up with us ... it's no our fault, we produce technology.
Finally, do not insult our intelligent robotic descendants -- they are alive now as our tools but will live on as our offspring. THAT is the purpose of our work.
He is cool, but who is he to tell us how to live? That's presumptuous. He's original, but others view work as a means to do things that they like to do. Most people would go nuts if they had to live out in a remote places without conveniences. That doesn't make them less important even if they have chosen urban areas and "racing" to things. To most, those things are civilization. In his world, we'd still live like cavemen because we'd only do the essential things. But he's genuine.
He's not telling you how to live. He's telling you how HE lives, and the value and satisfaction he finds in his lifestyle. Not once did he outright say that our society is wrong or evil, even if that's what he thinks personally.
And he really does have a point. The speed and pace of our society leads to a 'throwaway culture' where our arts are music are mere fads. It'd be hard to argue that the art of current pop stars will withstand the test of time compared to the art of say, the Beatles.
If you don't think that he is telling us how to live, you'r,e not listening to him. The implication is clear: be one with your tool, etc. And he admonishes those who, in his words, "are racing around." Maybe racing around is what they are best at doing. I live my life simply as well on a 50 acre farm, and one with a lot of tools--until Monday morning where I go do my real work.
Purposeful and efficient don't have to contradict. I feel that this man's intent to slow down and appreciate the purposefulness of his work is a grand step. A place to begin and reflect of why we work and what is accomplished.
I would then take that mental gain with me as I develop more efficient and creative ways to work while keeping the mindset of purposeful work. Like using targeted radiotherapy instead of total body chemo, or non-invasive dental procedures rather than replacing teeth.
Slowing down the pace of our culture would be slowing down the evolution of our culture. While he's toiling away with using obsolete equipment. Other's are either using new, more efficient technology to do the same job faster. Or contemplating how to eliminate deforestation by using other building materials. Who's to say what they're doing isn't purposeful? He's just waisting time.
"other's are either using new, more efficient technology"
highly doubtful, think of all the raw materials, time and labor used in their manufacturing. "contemplating how to eliminate deforestation" How about eliminating all the waste building said "more efficient technology" and our generally spoiled, wasteful, thoughtless society.
he's not wasting time, he's living. I venture to say your life is far more wasteful, and consumes *far* more of the worlds resources, than he does.
I lost you after the "said 'more efficient technology' and our....."
Regardless the first part of what you said made me wonder if it all balances out in the end. He cut down one tree for himself and probably uses it to build a house, fire, tools, whatever.
Technology allows us to cut down a whole forest in the same amount of time. The wood is than used to serve millions of people, not just 1.
evolution is not an iphone you r-tard. It takes thousands of years.
The disposable culture we live in is designed to make powerful men richer than they were yesterday. All this cheap stuff you buy is only made by exploitation. No wonder why it breaks and you then mindlessly go buy a new phone. This is evolution? lol.
Old methods still produce the best(quality) results.
modern science has provided you with the machine you're typing on, a standard of living & healthcare that people 200 years ago could not imagine etc. even if greed & exploitation drives invention, you personally reap huge benefits from the current system.
but hey, if you want to live a hunter gatherer existence and live for for 40 years max, that's your prerogative. maybe next time you get a cavity we can just wrap a rock in cloth and smash it against your face to knock out the abscessed tooth.
@twunger Fucking bullshit. Chainsaws cut wood fast, then you factor in the wasted motion, the cost, the fuel, more frequent sharpening, tensioning chain, fixing the internal parts and paying for new ones, plus they are loud and smell like satan's asshole. I'll take my goddamn bucksaw and axe. Zip through the piece of wood and hang the fuckin thing up and be done with it. Just because a chainsaw is fast and you can have other people fix it for you does not make it better.
It's not about trying to slow down the evolution of our culture because we had a culture that survived for millions of years doing things in a local and sustainable manner. It's about trying to get back to that which had worked for humans as a species for eons and forgoing what "modern society" has made us into. One hundred thousand years ago, in order to sustain a household using the primitive style of hunting/gathering took just 45 min. of work each day. As opposed to working 40 hrs a week.
Hunting and gathering took 45mins? try weeks of stalking herds with a small nomadic group, spending entire days getting a catch and then even more preparing it to eat.
Fast forward after hunting and gathering to the beginning of farming and again you have full days working the land, getting materials and doing heavy work.
Working in an office 40H a week for endless supplies of food, materials a car and a house is an advancement.
I own and run a Residential Tree Service, and I know EXACTLY what he means ;-)
