  • Bebe Daniels is best remembered as the lead actress who broke her ankle in "42nd Street", who graciously hands the part off to Ruby Keeler. Bebe was an accomplished actress and singer in a pivotal movie. Somebody should have told her to break a leg.

  • lovely and pure

  • I love this old stuff.

  • You can almost see Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald doing this. Several years later. Bebe does just fine in this number, as she always did.

  • My Mother's Aunt Nora was a concert pianist who dated a musician who wrote her a song called A Smile, A Kiss, A tear. I wonder if this is the same song.

  • your negative comments about this clip are compliments of the highest standard to me. love the singer they are GREAT VOICES and the MUSIC IS IN THE MINOR KEY. rated*******love this scence i operatic sing in the english language. it was recorded by a movie. could not care less if it is not movie standard. it is great thanks for posting!!!!! • HELP ! I'm melting....!!

  • Excellent and elegant. Something TOTALLY LOST in today's "movies".

  • So nice!!!

  • His voice in wonderful, but she's totally out of place, dressed like a fine lady but singing like a guttersnipe. She needs to get over to 42nd street.

  • 1930 or 1830?

  • 1730

  • The costumes are 1860s, but the film was from 1930.

  • What film is this? Would love to know...

    Thanks for sharing it!

  • "Dixiana"....listen very closely to the very begining of the clip.

  • 34-51 is almost identical (melodically and harmonically ) with Ruth Etting's version of "I'm Bringing a Red, Red Rose"

  • They wouldn't dare light anyone that way now! Full backlit, with only reflected light to bring out the form? Amazingly beautiful and fragile. Shadows are now only for horror movies, and rare even then.

  • When I was growing up in the 1950s UK, Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels 'Life with the Lions' radio show was essential listening on Sunday lunchtimes. Love the musicals.

  • Lovely!! I think that Bebe had a great voice. Do I remember reading that she had the same singing coach as Jeanette MacDonald -Grace Adele Newell? Thank you so much for sharing this item with us. Many of us are discovering new delights every day, and this surely is one.

  • I think of this as an "operetta" style, or just something like a musical. Like what you hear in "When Our Dreams Come True" (Irving Berlin!) from "Cocoanuts". I like Bebe's voice better than Mary Eaton's, gotta tell you. I'll be back!

  • Daniels was the most talented of musical stars that RKO Had in these days.Early 30's movie audiences did not mind the Quasi-Operatic style of this singing, as they were accustomed to this style in Operetta (Show Boat being the first true American Operetta and not a Musical), and thought it some what "Classy" to see it on film. Daniels had health problems in later years with a series of strokes. See my notes on the Rio Rita Clip regarding her family tie to Lee DeForest.

  • While I think she was crazy not to marry Harold, I have to say, she obviously made the right career move.

  • Lovely Bebe Daniels, one of my favourites, thanks!

  • Is this the same Bebe Daniels who appeared in almost all of Harold Lloyd's slapstick comedies from the 19-teens? Didn't know she was so talented.

  • YEP !

  • Magnificent!
