I think the most important line is "I don't give a shit what you think. I know what I think and that's all that counts to me. I don't try to impress anybody but myself". How could someone living at that time say there was nothing new about punk? That kind of statement boggles the mind. Just look at the music that was deemed acceptable at the time, the big pop acts, and then look at the sex pistols and you'll see what was fucking new about it . . . everything!

Well he was pretty "meh" about everything, even when the Pistols broke up in San Francisco. He was more of a social ladder climbing opportunist then a musician. Not to take anything away from the Sex Pistols but they were the ones who showed that punk wasn't viable and that those involved were either self-destructive, revolutionary or radical, but that's a societal perception. Him not having a soul is more of a compliment, he advocated freedom despite his lack of musicianship.

Punk was a NY scene that the British turned into a fashion show. John Lydon wasn't "punk" he was a fashion model. The Sex Pistols were N'SYNC with guitars and shitty clothes.

@elo333333333 Oh there's NO QUESTION that they were highly influential. I consider that happenstance. They were at the right place at the right time. It was definitely an exciting and scene changing time. But the Sex Pistols were hardly the progenitors of punk. It was the Americans who started it. The NYers were a bit more grimy and less fashion-oriented. Plus Johnny Rotten boosted the torn shirt/safety pin idea from Richard Hell. Nothing about the UK scene was new. It was repackaged.

It makes you wonder if they have any idea what the hell they're talking about, which that interviewer clearly did not. Just look at the music that was deemed acceptable at the time, the big pop acts, and then look at the sex pistols and you'll see what was fucking new about it . . . everything!
