uhh falling into infinity is okay... it's not the best dream theater out there, but compared to a lot of other bands it is really good. the best tracks on that album are Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand, Hollow Years, and Trial of Tears. it wasn't as good because the record people and kevin shirley were pushing for more commercial music. bastards.

Is it sad that as a drummer for like 8 years now Im fully convinced only behind the singer he is the worst member of that band... by a large margin. Dont get me wrong hes good, hes really good, but I just cant help but feel that his beats are just mindlessly matching the lead instrument and everyone else is just wrecking the track with him following for shits and giggles.

But the thing that makes Dream Theater so cool, is that they do whatever they want, and they're good at it. As you stated, Portnoy is good, extremely skilled, but as part of the band, they all do what they feel like, making them unique.
