The set was unimaginitive and the choreography was terrible. A stage that size has so much potential but the went minimalist. Should have been more Quasimodo and less of the Gypsies.

How can you ever translate that to keep the same magic and rhyme? You just can't. That is the beauty of French: it's magical way to turn words into melodies and enchantment for the soul.
I speak French and for me, no translations of any French songs will ever be good. Not only the song loses its beauty in the words that will not sound nothing like the original from fitting through French music that is very different from English music, but I also feel like the singers don't bring all the heartfelt emotions they bring into singing in their maternal language. The translations, in my opinion, are wonderfully done. The lyrics have to fit with the amount of syllables allotted, and not only is that perfect (in French, fitting in lyrics is easier because you can pronounce the final vowel if it doesn't fit), it also rhymes and carries the general idea of each sentence very well.

listened to some songs and found out that I like the French version better... Queenisgod has updated the French version with eng subs... I like it better... Bruno sings Gringoire in the French version, as well, but in french it sounds a LOT better...

oh god the english version lyrics are embarassingly bad. I don't understand why people bother doing this in other languages...I don't even speak french but I can't stand to see the russian, spanish, english, or italian versions of it because the original french is just worlds better.
I don't need to write better because someone already *did* write better, in french. and what we're talking about isn't "writing" in the first place, it's translation, and in this case it's poor translation. stop being reactionary. if you personally translated it or maybe performed in the english version (both doubtful) I apologize for offending you but that doesn't have anything to do with the *fact* that the meter was brutalized in the translation process.
Nonetheless, I have no problems with the english lyrics myself. Whatever problems the musical has are prelevant in the show in and of itself. Namely, overlong, repetative, boring in parts, too much filler music and most of all the most sparse and dull set desing I've ever witnessed for a stage production of this size.

I don't have a problem with the lyrics myself, they are not better or worse than any I've heard. No my problems with the musical I had with the thing in French as well. The musical is way, way too boring for the most part. Kind of how the novel was as well... but thats Victor Hugo for you, they needed the Les Mis guys to do this.
The problem with the musical this musical in my opinion is that is it not a whole. There are many separate songs which are good, but there is no unity among them. Adding to that the huge amount of characters makes this a difficult musical to identify with. Obviously, the French audience is used to this; les miserables was French too, I think, among others, but that had musical and thematic unity, which would explain the international success of that one.
@irgy709; I know your comment is 3 years old, so forgive me, but I have something to say on the matter. They didn't have a lot of room to work with. The english had to be kept consistent with the music that was used for the french. A perfect translation would make absolutely no sense anyway, so some interpretation does have to be used. I think the main problem is just that they didn't have a lot of room to work with. The lyrics had to be kept limited while still telling the story.
i suppose thats why the freench have such a long tradition in musical theatre, now lets think how many musicals are actually running in france? could it be 1 the lion king

Like repetative music and slow moving plot in which the songs almost barely fit. A sparse set that only works rarely and the characters singing about the same shit over and over again.
I don't think the music is the problem - it did extremely well in France, however it flopped in English speaking countries when the lyrics were horrendous. I mean, this song is supposed to be sung by a poet, yet it's hardly poetic!
i agree...the music is good, and it's the same singer ( Bruno Pelletier did sing it in english as well); it seems they 'directly' translated from french- bad idea..they did the same with romeo et juliette for english and german, and those weren't great successes either due to the texts and most ppl, who ne the orignal french musical were disappointed..
The problems are not inherent to the musical and the plot at all, they are of a linguistic nature. A translation from French to English needs to deal with words that are different, a different stress pattern and a different system of pronunciation, let alone the problems of tense, negation and the fact that literal translation will almost never fit the music.
I was surprised at how well it synched at points. But there are other parts where it doesn't because the French language differs there. But English and French are similar in some parts anyway.
