From Wikipedia: "Sodium metal in reagent-grade sold for about $1.50/pound ($3.30/kg) in 2009 when purchased in tonne quantities. Lower purity metal sells for considerably less. Smaller quantities of sodium, such as a kilogram, cost far more, in the range of $165/kg."
@Basco36 were all scared of the stuff because 3 OHS took it out of schools in australia , because we're a bunch of retards that put one foot in front of the other with out having someone to complain.
@Digadogup WHAT?? I don't know how it is now in the U.S., but when I was in high school (early-mid 90's) one of my favorite demonstrations was our chem teacher chucking a few grams of Na into a water bucket. Heck, he gave some of us gloves after school and let us do the tossing.
I want to eat it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad :(

Why the hell does everyone react sodium with water in an aluminum pie dish well knowing that the hydoxide dissolves aluminum??

What causes the explosion? Is it the molten sodium hydroxide that explodes in water or is it just the hydrogen?
Dornier335A 5 months ago
Just remember not to drink any water-based liquid after eating your sodium sandwich. You'll explode.

@Bassai That would be one hell of a belch.

I've always wondered what it feels like to cut through. Is it like wax or soap only a bit stiffer?
Fancy looking knife.

ok seriously where in the world would you get a 3 pound chunk of NA? xD
i mean my chemistry teacher was proud we had a 100g cube left :D

@Hephistos I just bought 1 oz on UnitedNuclear for $25 plus shipping and hazmat fee, not that expensive anymore.

that's weird when it's cut it's like hard butter
jinkss111 11 months ago
why does it look like clay on the outside?
Bassai 11 months ago
@Bassai because it is so reative it oxidizes the outside layer when exposed to air

@themacfan16 Quick tarnish. Thanks.

Beautiful. It's nice to know hobbyists can still get that big of a rod of Na.

@badmf13 Its not damascus! It just paint.

where in the world do you get a BRICK of Na
a BRICK
im guessing its the basic unit of measurement for sodium
i need like 5 bricks for Xmas presents

why is everyone scared of Na, Its really not that dangerous as you think.

@Basco36 Now repeat those exact words with your beloved 3 lbs in a rainy day.
Great video, and great bunch of Na

@Basco36 can it catch in fire if its exposed to air or it just tanishes and is it easy to melt???
dukilaki 10 months ago
@dukilaki if you leave it in air it just oxidizes into sodium hydroxide, yes its easy to melt
Basco36 10 months ago
@Basco36 SO ITS SAFE FOR MELTING AND CORROSIVE BUT WHILE I MELT I CAN ADD BORAX TO STOP CORROSION

@Basco36 Sodium doesnt form sodium hydroxide in air, doesnt it just form Na2O. It forms NaOH in water.
QuantumOverlord 8 months ago
@QuantumOverlord there is water in the air that turn the sodium NaOH, If you burn the sodium would make
its oxide / peroxide
