His digs at religion were pretty sharp; at this point Jim Baker had been arrested for fraud/embezzlement and another religious leader was raising money by essentially saying God was going to kill him if he didn't raise 1.3 million dollars. Chevy was very funny hosting Weekend Update and he was very good in Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation but as he got older he seemed to get less funny. I'm not sure why.Perhaps he started taking himself too seriously.

Comedy and humor is not a science, it is a taste. What is funny in Britain may not be as funny in the US. Our life experienced (from childhood, as an adult) gives us an individual framework of what WE may think is funny. What is funny to one person may not be funny to someone else. Obviously you know the name Chevy Chase for a reason, and it has nothing to do with Maryland. Chase would have to be a talented and funny person to a lot of people for you to even know his name. Give him a break.

The "AMERIKA" on ABC he refers to at 4:21 was a horrible mini-series movie about a Soviet takeover of the US. It was boring, dull and depressing. It aired in February 1987, maybe a  month before the Oscars.
