A few points from an old Lampoon fan:

A. He's a JAZZ bassist. He should have a standing bass. How do we know this? He's "playing cheap." Jazz musicians are (and were) heinously underpaid. He references producing a large quantity of notes put into "space"--a nod to jazz in general, and bebop in particular (see Charlie Parker).

B. Murray's bassist is black. White (albeit Southern) only works comedically if blues/rock genre (see A). Murray groks Jazz.
