i just rode 9122 last week and 9121 two weeks ago they have like a few left and they were on the 14 line haha. Also i rode this one as well to last week.
Just saw #9102 (a D60 in the silver/red paint scheme) running the 14 Mission line. I caught it at the corner of Sickles and Mission. Looks to be recently cleaned up and the exhaust also looks new.
@82MB240D I'm never at the right place at the right time, I have not seen or heard the D60 in a long time. Usually I have my digital camera ready in case. You never know where or when it shows up.
@lpcmidst128 Had I not been paying attention I would've missed it but I heard that distinctive 6v92 sound and I just happened to look up and there it was! I wish I had my camera when I saw it too.
@DaPlatinumJedi Yes I heard that one of the D60 recently is running on the 49 line and maybe the 14 as well. I have not seen it myself but I have my camera ready in case I see it. Very rare to see the D60 out on the street.
the 38 does not go to Ocean Beach anymore but the 38L goes to Point Lobos and 48 ave and the 38 goes to the same place and also the 38goes to the VA Hospital I you take the bus all the way to the VA Hospital you will need to walk a few blocks down to Ocean Beach now the 38 instead of going to ocean Beach it goes to 32nd ave and Balboa If you want to go to Ocean Beach with that bus and you take it to 32nd ave and Balboa you need to continue wiht the 5 Fulton, the 31 Balboa, or the 18 46th ave
there as 1 of them repainted into the gray one on December 30 2009 number 9120 on Geary presidio and masonic i dont know if you saw muni 9120 in the gray paint you may look on my videos if possible
this morning when I was in San Francisco I was on the 38 it was a neoplan an460 number 6259 at 9:40 AM i got off at 9:45 AM when the bus arrived I got off and in front there was muni d60 number 9120 in the gray and red paint it was not on a bus line it was a trainer with the driver the trainer was trained to ride a bus so the trainer was driving the bus
Yes in the past when there were many of the D60 in service, you would see these buses on any bus line that uses articulated buses. But right now I have not seen any of these buses on the 38L or any other line.
I think there are a few of the D60s still here but 9118 is the one I have seen, I have not seen the others. The past few times I saw a D60 was on the 9 San Bruno. But currently the 9 line is not using articulated buses.
I would say its likely there is a few left but I don't know which ones. The articulated buses are stored in a indoor garage so you can't easily see what buses are there. I don't live or go near where the 9 San Bruno run often. In the past few times this year that I've seen a D60 it was 9118 on the 9 route.
I really thought some of the Blue Bird Pushers school buses may have air starters, otherwise its a very good question because I used to drive a school bus.
Yes I'm sure there were Detroit Diesel CNG engines. I think they were diesel engine with some modifications that allows them to run on natural gas. I believe the series 50 and 60 had the CNG option.
Sure Detroit Diesel made V6 engines. The 6V92TA is a V6 as you can see in the designation. 6V=6 cylinders, 92=cubic inches of displacement per cylinder and TA should be Turbo Aftercooled. Another is the 6V71 which were V6 but smaller than the 6V92. There was also the V8 series such as the 8V71 which were on Muni GMC New Looks. The current Detroit Diesel lineup I think is the Series 50 and Series 60 and those are inline engines. I don't know if they still make the V engine configurations anymore.
Especially Ikarus/ NABI Artics is probably the worst production that makes Artics. New Flyer makes better artics. And I'll have to see about Nova Artics when they arrive in NYCTA, I can't wait.
I don't know how L.A. area got nearly all kinds of ugly NABIs. Im so MAD that they got rid of their 1992-93 TMC RTSes as well as other RTSes such as 1980 GMC RTSes from OCTA(they were my favorites), I also Love the MCI/Nova Classics at Big Blue Bus Santa Monica. Our New Flyer D60LFs are waaayyyy much better, even Nova LF Artics are better as well.
I'm not sure thats a good question. With air starters it depends on the air stored in the air tank. As the equipment gets old the air tanks can't hold air as well due to small leaks. When air pressure in the tanks are low you can't start it up. Electric starters are probably cost less. I don't think they make air starters anymore since all the new buses and trucks use electric starters.
This is the 38BX going toward the financial district (downtown). In the morning the Richmond express (1, 31, 38 AX and BX) go to the financial district. In the evening they go toward the Richmond district.
these buses were retired because line 15 third street got replace as line 9x but there are still a few of these left 9106 9108 9117 9118 9120 9121 9122 are still around 9101 9102 9103 9104 9105 9107 9109 9110 9111 9112 9113 9114 9115 9116 9119 9123 9124 are retired
Muni stores the diesel articulated buses at the Flynn division. It is a indoor storage facility so you can't really see it. I believe its located at 15th street and Harrison.
By the way the buses now have a letter designation right near the bus number that tells you which garage they are designated at. K=Kirkland, F=Flynn, W=Woods, PO=Potrero, PR=Presidio.
I saw a D60 bus inside the junk yard not too long ago I saw 1 this year when I was coming back from SFO airport If you take the 22 fillmore this bus goes to 3rd and 20th street and you need to cross on the 18th street bridge if you go to 20th street you will see D60 9110 sitting in there
Really? I'm not aware of any Flyers that have Cummins or Series 50 engines. They never put new engines in those buses. The D902, D40, D60 all had the same 6V92ta engine. Back then Muni also had some Flyer D900 buses from Samtrans, I think those had 6v71 not sure. Currently Muni has some AC Transit Gillig Phantom but I'm not sure what engines those have.
They are just at the 20 year old mark so its really worn down. I think also since the engines are 2 stroke, its not as fuel efficient and higher emissions compared to the 4 stroke engines. Its not as simple as just putting a new engine and transmission because fixing up other parts of the bus like the frame will add up to costing a lot.
Yes the D40 and the D902 have air starters, same engine too. The diesel buses that are in the historic fleet just stored at the yard, I think its at the Marin division
Its very rare to see these buses now. The best places to see a bus starting up is at the terminal stops. If you lived near a bus yard such as the Kirkland yard (Marina District) back then you would hear all those Flyer diesels starting up in the morning. All these new buses are electric start so it does not have that cool startup sound.
I may have lived in Daly City, but when i was little and growing up.. omg you could hear these busses GROWL! literally loudly.. it was an alarm clock for me and i miss these old New Flyer Artic busses. they were sweet.. unlike todays NABI's... i mean the Nabis are cool but it isnt the same.. last time i saw a New Look like this was in January Runnning the 9 Sunnydale. Good Times
New Flyer D60 are 9101-9124 so there are not that many of these buses. From what I find 9106, 9108, 9110, 9111, 9112, 9117, 9118, 9120, 9121, and 9122 are still in the fleet, rest are scrapped.
I don't think Muni will order new buses to replace these anytime soon. Even if they got rid of these buses there are enough Neoplans to cover anyways. A few of the D60s got scrapped due to the condition of those buses if I remember right. It would be good if they rebuild or replace the engines, these buses look like they are still in good condition.
The 6V92 is a 2 stroke engine and is not made anymore. It probably does not meet the current emissions. You would see a puff of black soot when they accelerate from a stop.
What are these buses getting replaced by because i dont see them around any more you see one of these can you get a video of one and tell me the bus line
I'm not sure, I have not seen or rode those buses in a long time. I usually have my camera with me in case I get a chance to see something. A few months back I seen one on the 38 Geary.
These buses are sort of rare now, I don't see too many of them around. I usually have my digital camera with me so I'll try to get a video when I can.
Yeah I agree these buses are great and still in good condition. Inside they feel roomier than the Neoplans. I still see these buses once in a while but its kind of rare. Just saw one today on the 38 line.
I think the 38 is about the only route that the old D60 tandem runs these days. Does muni have any of the D40s left? What about the electric New Flyers? (same sized ones as the D40's).
And yes, the old busses did seem to have more room. The AN440's seem to have lower ceilings.
They might run those on the 9 as well. The D40s are retired but there is one kept for the historic fleet, its probably at the Marin yard which is where most of the motor coaches are stored. The New Flyer E60 is the same size as the D60 and those are still used. They even repainted many of the E60 with the new gray/red scheme. The E800s retired many years back and of course they did save one or two for the historic fleet, its probably located in the Potrero yard.
It appears many of the buses are being repainted to the gray/red scheme. The gray/red paint appeared first on the Breda LRV when Muni purchased them. I think some of the D60s got repainted as well.
I like the original white with the orange line center paint scheme. And there was another one after that called simplified which had a smaller center line. With the gray paint, when its foggy the buses look stealth. The red line on the bottom is reflective if I remember right.
I'm in love. lol. It's about time somebody uploaded an older New Flyer D60HF with the 6V92TA/HTB-748 Combo. 5 Stars off the top lol. Could you possibly get some vids on a D40HF?
Check out the TTMG Website. There is the San Diego D60 HF Video. on the Take-A-Ride Series, there is a Same Powertrain. Check it out. You Will Love the Results of the Bus.
I definitely love the sound of the 6v92ta and the transmission of HTB-748! My suburban city used to have the Gillig Phantoms with the same drivetrain engine and the same transmission... Also, my city used to have the 1992's & the 1993's D40HF with the 6v92ta drivetrain & V731 transmission...
Yes 6V92TA and HTB-748 is a great combination. The sound is very distinct. Muni used to have New Flyer D40s HF with the same engine and transmission. I don't think these engines are produced anymore.
Well, it's because the 6V92 engine line was dropped probably in 1994, 1995, or 1996 because of the engine Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine, I think... Btw, I've never ridden on the articulated bus in all my life...
Our 1995 Classics that STO owns still got 6V92, so it was probably discontinued in 1996 cause STO loved the 6V92, the 1996 and 1997 Classics got Series 50
Btw also lpcmidst128, they might not be produced by detroit diesel but STO (the agency across the river from Ottawa) can produce a brand new 6V92TA, all they buy is the engine block and they get the employees to put together a brand new 6V92TA, sweet eh?
Thanks. I'm not really sure maybe end of the year. Don't see too many of these buses around. I like these buses better, they seem to have more capacity. The 6v92ta is a 2 stroke engine I believe and its not probably not as cleaner burning compared to the 4 stroke engines.
They replaced all the D60s around 2000-2001 with the flip dot signs (not sure the manufacturer). You can sort of see in the video the rear destination sign. I like the roll signs better, easier to see and tell the difference between express, limited, etc...
i just rode 9122 last week and 9121 two weeks ago they have like a few left and they were on the 14 line haha. Also i rode this one as well to last week.

I just saw a D60 operating on the 49 line this past Tuesday. No, I did not make a typo.
Recently, Potrero Division is having fleet issues there so sometimes you'll see motor coaches on the 22, 24, 49, etc.

I'm in love. lol. It's about time somebody uploaded an older New Flyer D60HF with the 6V92TA/HTB-748 Combo. 5 Stars off the top lol. Could you possibly get some vids on a D40HF?

The New Flyer D40HFs that were used by SF MUNI have been decommissioned.

Although they keep New Flyer D40HF #8926 for the historic fleet.

Also, some 1995-96 MCI MC-12s were also delivered with the 6V-92TA/HTB-748. During 1996 the 6V-92TA production halted.

Btw also lpcmidst128, they might not be produced by detroit diesel but STO (the agency across the river from Ottawa) can produce a brand new 6V92TA, all they buy is the engine block and they get the employees to put together a brand new 6V92TA, sweet eh?

Great video.
do u know when these buses will be retired?
villageway124 4 years ago 2
Thanks. I'm not really sure maybe end of the year. Don't see too many of these buses around. I like these buses better, they seem to have more capacity. The 6v92ta is a 2 stroke engine I believe and its not probably not as cleaner burning compared to the 4 stroke engines.

Do the SF MUNI New Flyer D60s have destination rollsigns or flip-dot destination displays?
Sulaco516 4 years ago 2
They replaced all the D60s around 2000-2001 with the flip dot signs (not sure the manufacturer). You can sort of see in the video the rear destination sign. I like the roll signs better, easier to see and tell the difference between express, limited, etc...
