Why do Sweeds have to constantly make comparisons of their military machine(s) to those of the USA? I just come to admire a great jet, but every video has the "We're better than the USA because.." Not Russia. Not China, or N. Korea. Are we currently at war with each other? No. It's almost like the whole country has an inferiority complex, or something. Yup, simulations can only give a hint of how things would end in theory. However, let's hope those "opportunities" to really test our military equipment will be few at worst.

These babies regularly do practice routines where I live. You rarely see them with the naked eye, but the thunder from when they light the afterburner is unmistakable.
But when you do happen to catch a glimpse of them (don't blink or you'll miss 'em) they are some incredibly sexy aircraft!
If europe really collaberated so that the main airforces had the gripen, rafale and eurofighter we would definitely had an airforce to be proud of. I for one am appauled by whats happening to the RAF. The typhoon is a brilliant aircraft but the tornados are due for another upgrade and then theyre going and in the end we wont be left with much.
Was lucky enough to see two of these land at ex RAF Sculthorpe last year.. We were urbex'ing in the old base buildings an they just landed on 06... stopped and then just took off..both pilots waved to us as we were close to the runway....

One aspect that frequently gets overlooked with the Gripen is how low the maintenance cost is . A typical pilot requires 20-30 service personel to be operational. A Gripen remains operational with under 10. Coupled with the worlds most advanced datalink system; it is the worlds only true guerilla-fighter! What good does two engines do you when you don't have a base anymore! Information superiority and availability is the Gripen.

Compared to the jet fighters those countries had, the Swedish J29 Tunnan was a world class fighter jet, and for a short while it held some speed record.
However Sweden did have the largest airforce in the world compared to its number of inhabitants. Since Sweden was neutral it needed to defend itself.

That is remarkably little in comparison to any other jet fighter.
But you don't know these things and just talk out of your ass.
The unfortunate thing is that it happened during an air-show so it was more public and had more effect.
It was a computer malfunction, not an engine problem either.
The Gripen is actually an export success, especially for a tiny little country.
Finland has Nokia, that's it.

Gripen is comperable to a F16.. which is a old plane, new planes like the JSF en EF2000 are much better. JSF is to a Gripen, like a Gripen is to a F5.

One aspect that frequently gets overlooked with the Gripen is how low the maintenance cost is . A typical pilot requires 20-30 service personel to be operational. A Gripen remains operational with under 10. Coupled with the worlds most advanced datalink system; it is the worlds only true guerilla-fighter! What good does two engines do you when you don't have a base anymore! Information superiority and availability is the Gripen.

Great clip and I think a very practical fighter. The soundtrack is very gay-porno like (not that I have heard many, but it has been explained to me that that's what they sound like). It was probably posted by a West Pointer, and having so many of them in my family, I can say I have always wondered at their enthusiasm for trim, handsome young fluff bunnies in cadet uniforms...so disciplined! I just wondered....only a very little bit. My interest was purely intellectual and historical.

I really like philosophy of the way how Airfor bases in scandinavian are builed; somewhere always in forest ;). Really cool implanted.. Much diff. feeling when we look at broad and wide USAF`Bases.

@TFSMOTO The idea is that by dispursing the planes & having Stovl ability They can't suffer any Pearl harbor type first strikes. They are thus not tied down to a easy to kill base system. The road network is designed With straight sections & cut outs to support pop up basing.

When I was lucky enough to live in 'Svealand' the population was about 7.75 million and Sweden had the 4rth largest air force after (in jet fighter numbers) after China (1rst), Russia (2nd), USA (3rd). As long as Saab is the choice of many foreign air forces they can stock pile these weapon platforms. And to think Sweden hands out the Nobel prize for various sciences. I have read they have the most advanced air force in the world. Considering who they know it is not hard to believe...

Serioulsy your "Largest" airforce is based on less than 200 Fighter (166)....from wiki : "The Italian Air Force operates a total active fleet of 551 aircraft. This makes the Italian Air Force the 5th largest in NATO only behind the USA, United Kingdom, Turkey, France. The AMI operates 227 combat aircraft" so be realistic. even the alphabet that you are using is "made in italy"

What Fille is saying is about when he lived in Sweden which is some time ago. We are now over 9 million inhabitants, and once we had the 4th largest airforce. Not anymore though.

Alright you are wrong too. He's talking about during the Cold War, where it was USA, Russia, UK and then Sweden. Also, all Nobel prizes are Swedish, and all are handed out in Sweden. Only the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out in Norway for traditions sake. How is it Swedish tradition? Norway was under complete Swedish rule, and so after becoming a state of their own Sweden let them keep handing out the Peace Prize.

they are capable and modern but they are quite small in size. their fleet of 140 fighters total is smaller than even azerbaizan or libya, let alone major powers like India, Japan, Turkey or Israel.

Sweden at one point had one of the largest fleet of fighters in the world, not now though.
Sweden is streamlining their military to be more of a spear head military with top equipment instead of a large force with huge number of soldiers and quantity materiel.
Swedish military is small today but one of the most modern and connected ones.
Swedish sub stay hidden from US forces for 2 years straight in training, unmatched.

Actually Sweden never had the largest fleet of aircraft in the airforce. In the 50's Sweden was 4'th however, only behind the USA, USSR and Great Britain. Compared to the jet fighters those countries had, the Swedish J29 Tunnan was a world class fighter jet, and for a short while it held some speed record.
However Sweden did have the largest airforce in the world compared to its number of inhabitants. Since Sweden was neutral it needed to defend itself.
