I LOVE plane spotting but, don't have the camera I want yet. Every morning, I ride past John Wayne Airport and see (usually) a Southwest Airlines Jet landing right in front of me. Soon, I'll post some good vids of the action!
Ah I miss living somewhere where they landed big gigantic planes on a regular basis! Do the fuzz ever give you any gruff when you are out filming and taking pics?
Actually, UPS is the only freight service that directly owns and operates the Boeing 747F (in -100F, -200F & -400F variants). FedEx relies mainly on DC-10s, MD-11s & Boeing 777s and DHL uses mostly A300Fs & B727Fs in their worldwide operations (although DHL regularly contracts/partners with Polar Air Freight who uses 747-400Fs but the aircraft are branded with the Polar Air logo & not DHLs). What's more interesting is that UPS also uses the DC-8 still. This is definitely a neat video. Cheers!
If I remember the video correctly, it was the final flight for 2 DC-8s. UPS operates or operated a total of 44 of the aging birds. If they did retire every one of them, then it marks the end of an era for the venerable aircraft. If not, then they are still plying the airways and keeping the legacy going.
I've emailed Jon for clarification because the video's notations are a little ambiguous. It leads me to believe that it was only the retirement for the 2 DC-8s in the video, not the entire fleet of DC-8s.
UPDATE: Heard back from Jon and UPS did retire their entire fleet of DC-8s (his video was only of the two still at KSDF). Apparently the information sources online are a bit out of date as they still indicate UPS operates the DC-8. Thanks for correcting me (and thanks to Jon for posting these great videos!). Cheers!
Wow, you can hear a cricket chirping in the background.

Nice! Never knew they had 744s! Good filming too. Filming at night is one of the hardest things to get right. And you got it spot on!

I know it's not a passenger jet, but I'm surprised there was no logo lights
tf51d 2 years ago
For some reason UPS doesnt use logo lights.
dooweezy 2 years ago
is it optional? I thought it was mandatory to use all lights during landings.
