the only real merit I see to this type of construction is that it can be strong enough to take a cataclysmic tsunami and float if built right. otherwise I'm not sure that much is saved if anything
@DanFrederiksen are you kidding? You can get a decent size container house for about 40k. these are a little ridiculous...you can do it very inexpensively.
@DanFrederiksen in Baltimore...I can get reefer containers for about 2k a piece..in decent condition...I'm in a port city..so it's a bit easier here...so with buildout....even with land...I think I can get it done for about 50k.
people are funny. they say oh we wanted to recycle. oh we want to provide housing for the homeless. NO... whaat u wanted was a cool nice house for cheap and if u make them a sell them you dont care about the homeless you want to make a quick buck. many of the ppl who sell these easy to make cheap house charge way more then they need to sometimes charging as much a a conventional house
@Forsure3333 Average container cost is U.S. $5000 per container. Some can cost more and some can cost less but that's about the going average. So, 7 containers @ $5000 is $35,000 plus all of the contractors and construction would easily turn this project into a cost of $120,000.
175k for that?...I know thats cheap compared to conventional building techniques but it seems like they paid 80% for the construction and only 20% in materials.
I mean its not hard to cut, weld, insulate and paint... then again I have built 2 homes with my father and together we could have built this for a fraction of the price.
The wacky layout and multi layers was probably the main cost.
If you dont mind me asking how much was the material and labor costs?
@unclesonnyonutube The funny thing is that you hid the nail on the head. The cost for containers was probably around $35,000. Add the cost for wood and I would guess another $5,000 - $8,000. The rest is all contracting but, I suspect, a home like this can be made just as nice for less.
not really - but we do have extensive experience in dealing with "out of the box" design & technology in construction.
we are building the first earthship in FL right now - a 100% off grid home. We literally amended the building code for the entire state to pull permits. We are also doing a zero energy conversion on a historic building using experimental techs from around the world.

@NILZA1 It's definitely possible. I'm from Leuven/Louvain actually but live in Florida. My brother is a developer based out of Assen but he uses a framing method. His company is called green tech homes dot NL. There's a big company in Amsterdam that does the container housing on a large scale called Tempohousing; check them out. The euro is really strong right now vs the dollar so who knows.
@NILZA1 sure. his name is Derek Arnauts. he's actually building a house out of his pasif method in Leuven right now actually. Definitely check out his stuff; it's very energy efficient & the cost per square metre is super competitive. Tell him his brother Rudy told you.

@davehutchinson67 no I'm not kidding. unless you want it to look like a stack of containers it takes a lot and with a lot of restrictions.
what do used containers cost?

@unclesonnyonutube it is also on a sloped hill side which raises the cost as well. Very nice design though!

the isolation make all the difference, the metal is like wood

They're originally refrigerated containers, like the ones used to ship produce, meat, etc.

Just spray stucco on the container!

@NILZA1 We are not the builders of this house but we are setting up a modular factory probably mid 2012. Where in Europe are you?
thecampustv 5 months ago
@thecampustv I live in Brussels and i think this type of house can be a big succes here if prices dont exceed The 120000 EURO

i think there's no difference between wood or metal, its only a different structure so no problem with building code...
