I understand why the zero tolerance policy is in place, but I think its gone overboard. Come on, arresting a child for misbehaving on a field trip. A brief suspension would be good, not an arrest.
Since when does the SWAT Gestapo have the authority to do random drug sweeps in schools with no probable cause? I thought this was the United States and not communist China.
I am hoping to get my CA teaching credentils in about a year. Wish me luck. I am also 100% against zero-toloerance policies. Why on God's earth would educated professional adults ever imppliment such a policy that will cause harm to last a lifetime on youth is beyond reason. Yes, often, schools need very tough diescipline. In my grade school, it was done with a wooden paddlle. It worked! Bring the board of education back! Bring acountablilty back!
@kooldavewarren Oh boy. Do you have an "awakening" to go through. I say that because I got my credential 7 years ago and now have some experience under my belt.
Zero tolerance policies throw out context and logic in favor of a "must stop thinking, must punish" brain dead approach. It causes 10 year old kids to get expelled for doodling on a desk with a pencil or bringing a toy gun to school. 30 years ago, the kid would just get paddled by the principal and learn his lesson. Nowadays the system treats that kid like a criminal and he has to go to a special behavioral school and go through 50 hours of counseling. This country is going to hell.
I am 100% against zero tolerance policies of conservative public schools. Zero tolerance does more harm than good. Public schools are becoming more and more like prisons. Under zero tolerance policies, students are less likely to confide in teachers or counselors for themselves or their friends. Zero tolerance policies show children that constitutional rights, such as innocent until proven guilty, do not apply to them, which goes against the very things we should be teaching them.
While I am 100% against the "anything goes" policies of liberal private schools. The schools need to be 100% behind the welfare of the student in trouble whether he be the worst kid imaginable or simply cheating on homework. When a student is expelled he or she needs to be provided good counseling to help them during their difficult period. In Fairfax County Virginia a student had possession of one capsule of JWH-018, a legal drug banned from schools. He was expelled and later committed suicide
As a result of this many are urging the county schools in Fairfax to reform the zero tolerance approach. While I don't know if there is an actual zero tolerance approach there are state laws mixing together with helping the student. Schools need to give counseling to the student and a realistic balance from keeping people safe from drugs, weapons, etc.. and still helping the misbehaved student redeme themselves then just kicking them out. Students can be dumb, that doesn't make them bad.
@Gowalum You obviously have never stood up in front of a high school class before. You are an idiot and it's idiots like you and lawyers that have wrecked American education. You're kid needs a swift kick in the ass.
@clarkewi I was in a class of high school students once. Many student were good and a few were bad, The specialized school I went to for LD/ADHD had a great character of students and was very innocent, but the 1 year in public school I saw students who screwed up and did things they should not have, but they still need guidance once kicked out. I guess I am arguing for an in between rule of not zero tolerance but not anything goes. Sorry for the delay getting back on the email.
Man I remember when I was in the third grade me and my partner in crime sneaked outta the cafeteria and went in the 4th grade bathroom and fucked it up. All we got was an ass whoopin by the teacher with a paddle, then more when we got home. lol this is stupid.
My father had an indoor firing range and even a small armory at his school. you could even bring in a rifle as long as the bolt was open. and now having a picture of a gun is terrorism. I myself was even suspended for bullying when someone misconstrued something I said. I'm getting sick of the shit.
Drug raids in a school? It's a sign of terrible management. If you're any good at being a principal, you can prevent students from doing these things. If your student vandalizes something on a field trip, then the school should pay the bill, then tell the parent "pay back, or find your kid another school."
I'm surprised the police didn't complain about having to deal with student misbehavior.
If a student possesses even an image of a gun they can be suspended in many schools because of this zero tolerance nonsense . The Massachusetts state quarter issued in 2000 has an image of a man with a rifle on it. Does that mean my third grade daughter can be disciplined for carrying her milk money to school.
you know i know people think it's harsh to have zero tolerance in schools. but in public schools things are getting worse and worse. i mean you have some kids bringing guns to school. threatening teachers. and it starts as young as elementary school.
the problem is especially in many urban and poor rural areas because of drug addicted parents or parents who work 2 and 3 jobs so there isn't much raising of the children properly going on.
By careful if you have your kids in Mesquite TX public schools. The will hide being their zero tolerance program and use the cops as strong arms to prosecute your children w/o any parental support. After the age of ten your children will be guilty w/o the chance for you to be present at the school or at court. It has happened to three of my children, elementary, middle and high school. The district is also intolerable of those with disabilities.
this is stuped....... one little thing...
