  • Love your web site the world of jackdempsey cichlid

  • hey my male chases my female (both jd"s) around the tank unrelentlessly and she jus rests at the top of the tank im thinking of getting a black convict 2 but im worried he will jus join in with the bullying is there anything i can do and all fish are below 3 inches and i wanted them to pair up and the male also does the shaking head thing but the female is terrified of him

  • ooooooh, she wants him ;)

  • how did your jack dempseys respond to each other when they were juvenillese. My 2 inch male keeps chasing my 1 1/2 inch female and she is so scared she just hides at te top of the tank in the corner. I added as much cover as possible in my 55 gallon and inside the tank is 1x medium log 1x big log 1x medium mangrove root 1x flower pot and 4x tall plants i dont know what to do

  • 1:35 lol.

  • hey nice fish was wondering if you could help me figure out if my jack dempsey is a male or female can u look at my video please and thank you i wld appricaite it

  • your music sucks moose cock

  • not very colorful if they have a very nutritional varied diet...

  • OOooooooohhhh, baby!

  • Hey, well i have a JD also, she's about 2 inches right now. I have her on a diet of nightcrawlers and cichled pellets(hikari gold). She's still afraid of me though any way of getting her less shy because she has lots of cover but she always hides. Any estimate on how many months it would take her to reach 5 inches.

  • can female jack dempseys have red on their top fin too? would two males do the whole locking of lips thing? farmersteven @ rocketmail . com with no spaces haha... let me know something please

  • can female jack dempseys have red on their top fin too? would two males do the whole locking of lips thing?

  • do they do this before they breed?

  • I tried this and for some reason my pleco tries to attack the mirror while my jack is doing it and the pleco and jack go round and round. They are both about 7 ". It is very interesting. has anyone else experienced this?

  • I can't tell if my Jack Dempsey's are attempting to mate or trying to kill one another. They are about 4 to 5 ". They have been in the same tank since they were quarter size. This just started after I cleaned my tank just the other day. It's been going on for two days now. The smaller fish just hides int he corner until the other one spots him and chases him. Any advice?

  • my fish did that before lol

  • I have a green terror and a JD. They're both still pretty small (4"), hopefully they can get along when they're bigger.

  • Damn, those are some gorgeous Jacks! By far my favorite cichlid.

    Stupid/HILARIOUS song, BTW. lmfao XD

  • Im trying this trick but the female doesn't do anything like in video. the male always attacks his reflection but female just stay away. and am i supposed to have only the pair in the tank no tank mates???? plzz reply

  • i have a small jack dempsey cichlid i got from petco in a 85 gallon fresh water aquarium i am wondering if i can house 2 jack dempsey cichlid in together in the same tank with out any problems

  • yes u can... 85 is more then enough!

  • what a waste of space

  • @flemmingj1965 I once had six 8 Jack Dempseys in the same tank together and they got along fine and lived a longtime it was a 55 gallon

  • this video should be labeled 18+. definetly not intended for children to see

  • nice vid.

  • i have a 5 inch jack dempsey about 10 months old(got him last year in feb.) in a 45 gallon tank and he kills everything i put in it with him, a firemouth, another jack dempsey, 2 oscars, 4 plecos, african cichlid.... any suggestions..

  • your full of crap a pleco???lol yeah right

  • a 5 inch JD wont kill a plec unless it is small enough to fit in his mouth and at 5 inch the plec must of been very very very small !!! a friend had loads of mollies n guppies etc n he changed to cichlids ! his first was a 5 inch JD lol !! it took a week before he started eating them !!!

  • @DivineFoxWoS

    1) Bigger tank. Jacks are territorial and will defend their turf. More tank space usually stamps out aggression. Too many large cichlid species in a 45 gal is begging for agression and/or water quality troubles.

    2) Add fish thats equal in size to the dominant fish (your Jack)

    3) Your Jack might be one that stays aggressive and needs to be kept alone. Some Jacks are like that, while most tend to be shyish and hide in caves all day.

  • Try re-arranging the tank before you introduce new fish, because the tank is established by Dempsey. if u re-arrange the jack will have to find new terrortory and it gives the other fish time to establish theres.

  • i doubt he killed a oscar

  • oscars are pussies...i had to take my 4 inch red devil out of the tank before he murdered the ten inch oscar haha. they only have the rep of being aggressive because so many people own them therefore they kill more often, if as may people owned red devils or dempseys they would find their oscars arent so tough haha

  • I'm not gonna argue with you about fish. calling fish "pussies" get a life.

  • @jake67822 well its not quite like that. it was just an expression and back to the point at hand. An oscar is not aggressive, ask any guy at a pet store and he will tell you something along the lines of ''if he can fit it in his mouth dont put in the tank with him'' other than that theyre harmless. a dempsey or red devil will harrass and kill other fish.

  • @florida1117, I totally agree with ya. Oscars only prey on other fish, it's not considered they're mean, and it's usually only when they're juvies when they ARE somewhat territorial. Many other cichlids are just downright aggressive though, like the Jag, Dovii, and many others.

  • what does it mean when the jack dempsy waves it tail on the other fish

  • do u think this would work with my texas and rose queen??? theve already bred but like a bit longer then a month ago.

  • im trying to breed my jd's but the male keeps attacking her..what should i do

  • Very Nice.

  • LOL I like the ending...they look at each other...

  • my jds breed almost every month, i think im gonna give them away or seperate them.

  • What size do jack dempsey's start breeding?

  • hes getting them to breed just as its says in the discription you tard

  • No chance. A single JD needs about 55 gallons.

  • Read the discription stupid cracker.

  • fuck up nerd

  • Dude read the discription, he is getting them to breed, look at them, they are healthy and well taken care of.

  • ur the fuckin r-tard. go stick ur dick in the vaccume clleaner again

  • A little harsh don't you think.

  • stupid fucker

  • I have a jack very small dempsey and she roasts just like yours she roasts that she puts the lips in the glass and much moves-------------------------why he do thatt please reply

  • Alrite check out my vids of my Ds doing there ritual let me know if that looks like theyre breeding? theres 2 vids

  • i have a question i tried this i have a pair of dempseys the females the same size as urs and the males a little smaller about 4 years old and i tried the mirror and it was a no go this was a few months back it was a bit of a crowded tank now theyre with just my red bellied pacu and he just chills soo they really are more comfortable now do you think this would work now and do they get tooo agressive to each other or other fish after eggs are layed the pacu is 15" soo he should be ok?

  • Hi Tweak ... The mirror works with some fish and not with others. Since they are now less crowded and able to claim some territory, it may work better for you. Don't worry about that Pacu. If they try to get too rough with him, he can take care of himself. A breeding pair of JDs don't usually get agressive with each other while caring for eggs BUT, I find that males often get mean with their females between broods. Good luck. :)

  • soo my Jacks just started doing this mating ritual tonite haha without the mirror they both got very vibrant colors and male is swimming around against the glass and the females hitting him but they havent lip locked the male trys to but she wont lip lock back at him? will she soon ablige him? or what does this mean because she seems very interested in him theyre both almost in a trance doing this i video taped it soo ill post it and let u check it out ill let ya know wen i upload it

  • are these EBJD's??

  • Many people have asked if my JD are Electric Blues. They are NOT. They are simply a result of excellent nutrition (varied diet) and good living conditions. When mating, most every fish's colors become more intense.

  • @NOxPLoDeFlyLikaBird no the female has the blue gene but its not a ebjd. one of its parents or "grandparents" was most likely an ebjd.

  • can u tell me is it possible for a jack dempsey and a leucistic convict cichlid to breed because i have a JD and a leucistic cichlid and theyve been doing the same thing as the ones in the video. let me know i thought they were just fighting but they were locking lips and stuff

  • How big do they normally get? I've heard anywhere from 6-12 inches? What is realistic?

  • Hello pdandy88. The size of your JDs will depend on several factors including tank size they are reared in. Usually a male will get up to 7 to as much as 10 inches and females 2 inches less. Remember, fish NEVER stop growing so the longer they live, the larger they get.

  • where did you get the notion that fish NEVER stop growing so long as they live? just curious

  • It's a fact that most aquatic animals continue to grow throughout their life. Of course the growth rate is greaty reduced

as they age. Many very old fish (aggresive types) develop sharp spikes in there mouth, somewhat like teeth.

  • wow those are some nice looking jack dempseys

  • Thank you ADIO... unfortunately, the female has died. (smaller of the two) He'll miss her. They've been a mating pair for over four years.

  • that sucks that might be one of the best looking female jack dempsey i saw on youtube

  • my dempseys just did this about 2 minutes ago

  • This guy sick fuck

  • hey, i have a jack dempsey too. its about 5 inches long and in a 10 gallon tank. i have it for about 3 years already. when i first had it. it was only about an inch big and it stops growing now. i feed him the Aquarian brand cichlid pellet food. Can anyone please tell me what i should do to let it grow more? is it the size of the tank or the food? please help if anyone can give me some suggestions thanks a lot

  • u need a bigger tank probs about 200l

  • For you you may want to feed him blood worms or brine shrimp once in a while it becomes pricey if thats their only food so have a split diet of pellets and blood worms. You may also want to try to have him by himself if he already isn't and put him in a bigger tank. If you have a really good pump on your tank it will also help his growth! Thanks!

  • get it a bigger tank

  • Which would be better for my 55g tank a Green Terror or a Jack Dempsey?

  • I would say a Jack Dempsey because I have my Green Terror with a jewled cichlid in a tank and it's perfect! The tanks a 30 gallon.

  • Fish are great creatures.Your dempseys are beautiful.

  • my dempsey and OSCAR are doing the same thing

  • I like this SONG...lol

Seriously, I breed cichlids and those are definitely a pair...my favorites are the Acaras, ALL of 'em !!

I'm gonna' be watchin'...thank you for sharin' with all of us !!

  • Ihave a jack dempsey cichlids how big do they grow

  • it all depends on the size of your tank. they can get pretty big like over ten inches or so.

  • nice fish!

    they r deffinetly breeding!!!

they must are going to have good baby's cuz they both have nice colour!!!

  • my red devil/idk has beaten my green terror half to death so i put it in my other tank with my larger red devil and i have 2 male jacks in the same tank and all of a sudden one wants to be all macho man and bullie the other one..idk since i took the red devil out becuz the red devil was king but now the jack dempsey is trying to take over and i have no where to put them so whut can i do...i didnt mean to but 2 males when i got them they were around 1in now one is like 5in and 1 is 4in

  • I will never be able to look at Jack Dempseys again without thinking of this song.

  • Looks like to males to me.The smaller one is not female mate.

  • Hello LeeAmes. The smaller Jack IS a female. These two have been paired for almost 2 years and have had many broods of babies. Look again my friend.

  • Sorry you are right,That is a very nice female.

  • females dont have as many spangles on there body as males

  • i hope my male gets lyke yures it bout the size of that female in not a bit smaller

  • hey i have a 80 gal tank and want to know if it is big enough for 2 dempseys and 1 texas and maybe an oscar??? plz reply

  • It should be okay but if you have a breeding pair of dempseys, you might see some chasing going on. Good Luck

  • yeh well that is another question can you have a pair of dempseys without them breeding and if not can u have 2 males together...how do you tell difference when they are 4cm?

  • Two males will tend to fight/harass each other very often and sometimes can even get violent with females. Yes it is possible to have a male/female that wont spawn. But thats very difficult to determine. Sexing Jack is hard and near impossible when their young. Generally when their around 3" to 4" is when their gender characteristics begin to become defining.

  • can the parents be with the babyes over 2 week? ore how long?

  • how do you sex these fish when young(5 inches)

  • wow! how big is he now?

  • ur male is a monster

  • You should see him now. He's grown another inch and much fatter.

  • i bought 2 and they fight eachother

da pet land guy sed they'll gang up and kill my angel fish but the nice lookin 1 luvs da angeel fish and the messed up 1 hides in filters,i call him moo(MU-messed up) he cant fite 4 nuttin and is scared of movin things, once they were liplockin and were gunna fite but 1 swam off lol

  • try feeding him feeder fish maybe it will knock some sense into the scared one that he can be a badass

  • i tried,he gets beat up by the angel fish and da feeder XD

  • nice jds...check out mine

  • i like male jds better than the females..they look better but sadly i have a female

  • I didn't relise that Jack Dempseys react when you put a mirror on the side, so I tried it. WOW! Didn't expect my jack to knock himself out & DIE :-(.....Please Don't try this @ home

  • I didn't relise that Jack Dempseys react when you put a mirror on the side, so I tried it. WOW! Didn't expect my jack to knock himself out & DIE :-(

  • very cool video. How about some more Jack?!

  • Hey My 2 jack dempseys are doing the same thing what can I do to make this breeding successful. I have no caves or plants in my tank. Would I need any for the female to lay her eggs, also will I have to remove them for the babys sake or will they be good parents and not eat them?

  • Jacks love dense habitats. The more cover they have the better they like it. Its what they prefer in their natural habitats. For breeding one of the best things to do is place a good size piece of slate in the tank. Females lay her eggs on a clean flat surface. A lot of times they will dig a pit all the way to the bare glass and lay her eggs like that. Jacks are very good parents. DO NOT remove them after spawning as Jacks take care of their young until they are self sufficient fry.

  • I have a 8" jack dempsey in a 75 gal male, and I also have a little guy, I wanna know what size female and what do I do to get lil dempsey's and how do I protect them

  • jack makes the light nervous and when he(she) wants to form a pair it(he,she) behaves aggressive between(among) them. These undoubtedly they are equal

  • can anyone tell me the name of this song?.

  • yeah, its "gay boys gettin groovy"

    LOL

  • LOL!. Are you sure I can't find it on iTunes or limewire. Who's the artist/s.

  • does anyone know what these lil white worms are in my fish tank walls?

  • its just some parasites that sticks to your walls till it can find a host in your tank to latch on which is called ich...

  • Ich is white spots not white worms.

  • oh ok

  • stop feeding live food then it will get better.

  • gercekten güzel balık turkey de olsa iyi olurdu.

  • not very nice coloration

  • Your buggin dude, those are some pretty cool colors on both of them. What colors were you expecting? He never said they were electric blue dempseys.

  • I have a JD Cichlid, and (Apparently mine is a girl, after reading what you said about the differences of the genders) and she is this greyish color in her 55g tank, and then in her temporary tank (When I was moving her usual aquarium) she turned back to her normal color. I can email you pics of the differences if you want, I just want to know why!!!

  • JD's, like so many cichlids, change coloration with change of mood. It can happen rapidly. Stress will usually turn them dark with patterns on their back but they are all different in this respect. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • OKay, thank you! Oh, and I have since bought more decorations/ one is a cave for her to hide in and while she's in the cave, she shows more of the same color as your fish.

  • Intersting!.I always thought when fish are stressed they turn pale.

  • Hi Trini82... These fish are not exactly stressed. They are excited and color become vivid then.

  • I was actually responding to a comment that said JDs become dark when they're stressed, but I think it's the opposite. Your fish look very healthy and gorgeous.

  • The spawning color's of a JD are dark. But at the same time I'm taking in what your saying because we have a male thats black all the time and keeps beating up the female.

  • they want to get out of that tank

  • So would I.

  • how can u tell which one is female and male?

  • The female has blotches on the gills unlike on the male who has just a few spots around there. The male is also much larger. :) I have a male jack of my own.

  • damn i got two females then. but one is really colorful and the other one is kinda bland.

  • I've been breeding these guys for over three years and I find that the females develop a lot of color on the cheek, (forward of the gill and back of the lip. The Males are usually void of much color in this area.

  • i thought males were suppose to be more colorful. that's why i thought i had a male and female. i'll post a new vid soon. can u help me sex it. i'm in the middle of switching tanks so give me like a week or two.

  • love your jacks
