Ken Stabler knew how to win games because he played with great players at every position. The Raiders won two Super Bowls '81 and '83] after Stabler left the team. Frankly, Stabler probably played with better personnel than Joe Montana did in SF.
I was a huge Raider fan during that era and I am here to tell you that Stabler's teams suffered from a major flaw that always put him behind the curve when they had to play Pitt for AFC Title: their front defensive seven. Their secondary was as good as the hyped Steeler crew but the front seven for the Raiders was VERY overrated: guys like MLB Monte Johnson, OLB Phil Villapiano, DT Otis Sistrunk, NG Dave Pear, and even big Matuszak. The Raider O-line and Casper rocked but Snake made it sing.
@teller121 But in 1976 the Raiders beat the Steelers defense (which won 5 shutouts that year) but yes I wonder how the game would have gone if Harris could have played. If you look at the 70s the best were the Cowboy Steelers Dolphins and Raiders no one else.
Great QBs know how to win games, its not all about stats. Some HOF QBs have these: Y.A. Tittle 212, 221; Sammy Baugh 187, 203; G. Blanda 236, 277. Bradshaw: 212, 210 but only 51% completion rate. Yet these guys knew how to win. I would rather have these numbers and a SB ring, rather than have out-worldly numbers but fall short of the title. Ask Dan Marino.

Kenny Stabler completed 194 td passes in his NFL career. He threw 222 interceptions. That last number disqualifies him as a Hall of Fame QB and a "great passer." His teams had great success, but he just threw to many picks. People will slam Brett Favre for throwing interceptions, but he was not nearly as bad as Joe Namath and Kenny Stabler.
But remember Stabler played 90%+ of his career in the era when lineman couldn't use their hands to block, defense could hit receivers all over the field (no 5 yd contact rule) and interference calls were pretty rare. In that era, 200 yd pass days were huge, even by Staubach and Bradshaw. It payed to run more back then no matter how good the QB. NFL created the pass-friendly changes in '78 to hike attendance among folks who wanted more scoring - football, sadly, has never been the same since.
The Snake is absolutely one of the best QB's ever. Fucking joke that he is not in the hall of fame. Much better than dan fouts who is in the hall. Joke!!!!!!
This year, outrageously, I noticed that he didn't even make the nominations that the winners were chosen from; one of the winners being Floyd freakin' Little - but no Snake: '76 champ; Ghost to the Post in 2overtime in Balt against Bert Jones; falling down miracle pass to advance against Dolphins; 67% pass completions 1 yr (when that meant something); cheated out of repeat Superbowl appearance by the Rob Lytle fumble in Denver in '77 that wasn't called a fumble by "Orange Crush" obsessed refs.
Funny thing is all those great QB's you mention...they are great no doubt....Snake holds a winning record agents ALL of them! If that does not say HOF,your smoking funny cigarets and forgetting to exhale .
Snake belongs in The Hall. I'm a big Redskins fan & I hate the raiders for demolishing my team in the '84 Super Bowl. Still hurts... Hard to hate Jim Plunkett, but... Anyway... I digress. Kenny Stabler deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
God I loved when the snake and eli called bama games together, so he likes a cocktail every once on awhile, Big deal, I miss him on the radio.

he's got a super bowl ring as a qb,no small feat and an exclusive club to be in,especially hard for Auburn qb's to get in the club it appears

are you gonna talk about how not clutch he is when he just broke a 50+ touchdown in the closing minutes of a game

Ken Stabler was one of the top 3 passers of the 70's. He should be in the Hall of Fame. Those voters are a disgrace. Thanks for the memories, Snake!

@RockbertoRocks Yeh, I use to be a big fan of Stablers. Very surprised he hasn't been nominated.

Unfortunately Kenny Stabler is not in the Hall Of Fame. He keeps getting snubbed by the powers that be.

Greatest game was the 1974 playoff between Miami and Oakland. Raiders won in dramatic fashion. Stabler tossed an unbelievable TD.
