I'd like to try this with a Windows based PC but . . . the main problem I can see with this sort of arrangement is how do you stop it from moving the mouse pointer all over the screen at the same time?
looks like the bottom of a cd player with a cd thats had all the film part removed so its clear then an optical sensor from an optical mouse is used to sense position.
pretty smart idea even if i am wrong lol, how about a vid on how to make it?
Click the "this is a video response to DIY USB Scratch pad" link - should be pretty self-explaining.. In v2, i just disassembled an optical mouse and a cd player - then put the stuff from the mouse inside the cd player.
no soldering or anything. (i hate soldering for some reason)

What mouse did you use? Was it easy? How long did it take? Can I use it for Virtual DJ?
PLEASE ANSWER ME...Or PM me...Or something, i need to give it a shot!

plain optical mouse... but it shouldn't be too hard to do with a non-optical mouse..
was pretty easy.. virtual dj... hmmm.. you'd have to try for yourself - I'm not familiar with it..

Would love to know how you did this.

I think the person disassembled a mouse, placed the sensor in a CD player, got a CD, popped it in, and got a simple scratchpad.

This video doesn't show how you did this. It looks like a CD player?

i did made this one but it should not be hard.
if i guess right u need
Cd-player & usb mouse (laser one)
1. Open Mouse and Cd Player
2. Take off everything inside from cd player.
3. Take off everyhing inside your laser mouse
4. Place the stuff from mouse in side cd-player
5. Make sure that you place the laser thing from mouse that it can read cd. I suggest to place it where the CD player laser was.
6. Connect the usb chord to computer and you are good to go.
