They DO say that in 1989 the solar storm knocked out power in northern Quebec for 9 hours. I REALLY think you are confusing these two totally separate events. The Solar storm happened in Nineteen Eighty Nine, the ICE STORM happened in Nineteen Ninety Eight. The ICE STORM happened 9 YEARS after the SOLAR STORM, They don't mention the Ice Storm at all in this video.

This is pretty much what will happen in 2012. This is what the Mayans are predicting. However it is preventable. But we're losing time fast. The power grid can't be upgraded. It has to be completely new with transformers and transistors that can take at least 15 times the load we're currently putting on it (it would have a chance to handle the solar storm) plus "smart" and "green" technologies (read Lawrence Joseph's interview.)
Another way that will help things is to take Germany's stance on renewables. Including homes that can produce power through solar and wind technologies. Hell even take Germany's stance on selling the power your home generates back to the companies for 62 cents an hour. Of course I would prefer a rebate plan and discounts on electricity bills . This combined with completely new grids will make 2012 easier to deal with than where we are now.
Better to be prepared than do nothing. What I listed wouldn't be a waste of money. It would decrease our dependency on foreign oil, people would save money on their electric bills, and reduce green house gases. People can save a lot of money potentially. It's not a waste.

Bet you did not stop to think that yes even cars, trucks to planes all can stop working because they use electronics to run. This documentary is totally incorrect in its references as to the cause of the Province wide blackout. The blackout was caused be a HUGE ICE STORM, which knocked out key sections of the power grid in Eastern Ontario and Quebec- NOT from any solar Storm ! Disgraceful inaccuracies from lazy film makers who don't want to do their homework !

You have confused the 1998 "Ice Storm" with the 1989 "Solar Storm", which this video is about. I clearly remember both events occurring as I lived in Northern Ontario at the time of each. Please watch the video again and listen a little closer to the dates given. Take care.

In this discovery channel program the reason for the 1998 ice storm is given as caused by a solar storm, and this is totally false ! Solar storms had in fact *Nothing* to do with the freezing rain deluge we received here in the greater Montreal Area at the time. I think it's the film makers who are confused here.

Sorry, I watched this several times and I don't see or hear where they blame the 1998 ice storm on the 1989 Solar Storm. They DO say that in 1989 the solar storm knocked out power in northern Quebec for 9 hours. I REALLY think you are confusing these two totally separate events. The Solar storm happened in Nineteen Eighty Nine, the ICE STORM happened in Nineteen Ninety Eight. The ICE STORM happened 9 YEARS after the SOLAR STORM, They don't mention the Ice Storm at all in this video.

Planet that blocks most of these things from hitting earth because a) they crash into jupiter or b) they are headed for Earth but hit Jupiter because of its massive gravity field. In 2012 the Earth will stop its 2million year topple and the Milky way will aline and Jupiter will be way way way North. Meaning that its not Earths shield anymore. This is pretty much what will happen in 2012. This is what the Mayans are predicting. However it is preventable. But we're losing time fast. The power grid can't be upgraded. It has to be completely new with transformers and transistors that can take at least 15 times the load we're currently putting on it (it would have a chance to handle the solar storm) plus "smart" and "green" technologies (read Lawrence Joseph's interview.)

Another way that will help things is to take Germany's stance on renewables. Including homes that can produce power through solar and wind technologies. Hell even take Germany's stance on selling the power your home generates back to the companies for 62 cents an hour. Of course I would prefer a rebate plan and discounts on electricity bills . This combined with completely new grids will make 2012 easier to deal with than where we are now.

This is possible - but this is the worst case scenerio. This is legit though; check youtube for top physicists' predictions. Still, I wouldn't panic. And certainly don't panic to the point of gun hoarding! Just have emergency backup candles and some food, like you would in any other natural disaster.

This is so scary. The sunspot activity started to pick up in November '08... This could be happening you guys... Start thinking about stocking up on supplies. Because if the storm is big enough everything is going to go. Food, water, cellphones.... Shit the solar storm in 1859 (the last big one) started fires in the U.S. and throughout Europe from frying the telegraph lines... And the 2012 may be bigger...
