  • What is it called wanted to reasearch this and man o wars but I dunno wut this is

  • @grant68829

If you look at the comments above, it has been identified as a pyrosome ! If you look up that group of animals it will make sense :-)

  • long time since I went scuba, but these things were called Salps, I think.

  • No. Not a siphonophore. that is a pyrosome. A pelagic chordate related to a tunicate. They get big enough sometimes to swim through..

  • @asterias

Hey thanks for that ! It sure does look like it in all the pictures.

Thanks again for solving the mystery.

    Chris.

  • @asterias have you swum thru one? if so, fucking big respect! those (animals??) are freaky AF!

  • Cool. Maybe you can ask them, if it is a siphonophore, of which size one of these small single organisms might be, and how many of them it takes to make up a creature like this?

  • @netzweltler

They are on the case ! Should have an answer from the experts soon :-)

  • I detected one of these creatures during a snorkeling trip in the Red Sea. It was in August 2008. Still don´t know what it is. I also think it is a compound of very small organisms in a tubular arrangement, acting like a single organism. I placed two videos on Youtube this week. Check my channel.

  • @netzweltler

Hey thanks for that ! Yes definately think you saw the same or very similar creature as they certainly look the same.

I reckon it is a colony of Siphonophores as suggested below by Wavelength. A freind of mine is a jellyfish expert and has lots of friends who are experts on related animals. Will get an exact answer soon !

  • thats so cool. what is that thing?

  • We think it is a member of the Siphonophore group :-)
