The idea with her is that all the other cats including Gus (and Macavity) had a great life...full of love, family, laughter and Grizabella lost all this. Lived a life in pity and shunned by others. She kept those memories close to her and sadness within. So she has a chance now to relive a life, a second chance.
Ok the first time I saw this musical live I was about 7. So at the end (the theatre wasn't big enough to have that big floaty stair thing) grizabella just went to the highest point of the stage and dramatically (as if she was dying) walked off stage. So at the end I was like MOMMY WHY DID THEY KILL HER??? I THOUGHT SHE TURNED GOOD?!?!?

The rising sun and the friend at hand are pubs, both still there in 'the grimy roads off Tottenham Court'. I live round St James so I keep a lookout for bustopher :)

@Futurefamousvocalist No, the points is diffrent, the whole musical is to show you who the cats are. To help understand cats better. That cats are very human, in that they have human like personalities. Such as Macavity (easiest example to explain). Macavity is the kind of cat that is always into trouble the kind of cat that jumps off the shelf as you walk in the door and scratchs you. Or pushes stuff off the counts or eats your food when you leave it on the table. The point is cats are like us.

@exodia1510 I so agree this musical touches me every time I'm so mad though I was in my community play this season (which is my first) and I just found out that they did this one last year and I missed it! :-(

I felt misty when the youngest...made the move to reach for her...it was a lesson for all...and it made all the difference in the world to Griz, she looked so surprised, then overjoyed...

nah, the tugger would be a way better phantom, 'cause the phantom knew what he wanted, he was determinent, while as misto is adorable. tugger or munkustrap, or maby alonzo... but the tugger would be the best :)

@inkkulol It's an interesting idea, but somehow I can't picture Tugger singing Music of the Night (lol). Actually, now that I think about it, Macavity might make a good Phantom. He's got that kind of unhinged feel, and it was mentioned in his song that he's "outwardly respectable."

@qwoodgett The musical was roughly based on T.S. Elliot's poems 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". Andrew Lloyd Webber adapted it to a ceremony that cats have every once in awhile where one of them is chosen by their leader to go to the Heavyside Layer, or another better life.
They sing about different cats that they know of, or ones they think should go. Grizabella is an outcast cat, and no one likes her until her plaintive song "Memory" is sung.

@jbLover9811 Actually, Victoria and Jemima accept her throughout the whole thing, the older cats just kept keeping them away from Grizabella, before Vic puts her hand on Grizabella's, she looks back at the older cats, like to say: "You're not going to pull me away this time are you?" But Jemima and Victoria try to reach out to her through the whole thing. Yet another reason why I love the character of Victoria.

It takes Victoria to make the first move and show the others that Grizabella can be approached, even though they all shunned her up to that point. What is the Heaviside Layer? Cat heaven? Always confused by this: looks biblical. Deuteronomy even looks like Moses.

@JHerbert2606 there's that thought. there's also the idea that these breed of cat regenerate, so instead of dying, there's some plane of existence for themwhere they can create a new self and life; tugger did say deuteronomy himself has "lived many lives in succession"-cats have more lives than dogs. what is the separation between these "lives"? this song suggests the heaviside layer. but that's the fun part about this play-it leaves so many questions open.

@JHerbert2606 I agree, it would be pretty stupid for him to pick himself, but he wasn't necessarily the leader of this clan since day 1; there might've been a past one to take over like munkunstrap will take over for him. and i would imagine even if he did pick himself once in a while, the other cats would've been ok with it since he is pretty old. just sayin.
