i think i could make miles and miles of this a day if i wanted to. i use this to keep lengths of rope in a nice tight bundle. its easy and very fast to make when you get the hang of it. it also unravels easily when you need to use it.
I've been watching your videos for over an hour, you've tought me alot. Take a look at my ebay shop it's emma22bob, I'm sure you can give me some suggestions.
@Devildogsrule101st yes. I've done it with quite a bit of rope. Just Keeps going and going and going. Let me know if you find a good use for 50' of caterpillar sinnet.
@FraggerRem - Makes a great way to store very long lengths of extension cord or rope. Won't tangle and is very easy to unravel. I store all of my electrical cords, christmas lights, tow straps and tie down straps this way. Useless it is not.
@FraggerRem Look what is hanging under the snare drums of the Royal Marine Band (and other military bands). That is the only place I see it used to any practical effect.
I love your videos. I have learnt so much knotting- I can actually begin to comprehend (some) of ABOK that's the Knotter's bible to non-knot geeks- Ashley's Book of Knots).
Thank-you very much for your help. PS- when is the book coming out?
Still, both Geoffrey Budworth (co-founder of the International Guild of Knot Tiers and author of over 42 books) and Clifford Ashley (seminal author of ABOK) spell it "sinnet, so I do too.
very cool!! great video! I have been looking for a good video on this knot. i think another name I've heard for this knot is a daisy chain. it also can come unraveled easily if you need it to. thanks *****

It's also a crochet chain...without using a crochet hook. It looks much prettier with rope :-)

Ahhh, the ever-useless "daisy-chain" as it is called in my area. Nobody can find a useful purpose for it in my town.

It's also called...
...a Chain Sinnet, Chain Sennit, Chain shortening, Chain Stitch, Chain Braid, Crochet Stitch, Daisy Chain, Caterpillar Sinnet (my personal favorite), Monkey Braid, Single Trumpet Cord, and Single Bugle Cord...
...and the list goes on.

@TyingItAllTogether i use this knot on long ropes so they dont get tangled... if u pull the very end it will come undone very easy, just pull :)

The correct word is not "sinnet" it's SENNIT.
Khamomil 2 years ago
Look it up... It's spelled both ways.
Still, both Geoffrey Budworth (co-founder of the International Guild of Knot Tiers and author of over 42 books) and Clifford Ashley (seminal author of ABOK) spell it "sinnet, so I do too.

Technically...
A "sennit" is a kind of cordage made by plaiting thinner strands of rope or grass.
While a "sinnet" is a method of shortening a rope or other cable while in use or for storage.
