About as many people believe seahorses are a myth as know that it is the male that births the young. The pouch is only on the male - thats how we tell tehm apart.
Most information suggests that they need a colorful background, green, orange, red to enhance their color. I tried a variety of backgrounds and colored things in the tank but the parents stayed dark. When I set up the baby tanks I used VERY bright lights and soon discovered that hte light intensity is really what gives them color. The seahorses in the higher tanks closer to the light are always bright yellow and the lower tanks they are darker.
thats interesting to know, thanks, i saw a pair of seahorses on the LFS recently, i might get them if they're still in stock (bearing in mind i haven't even got water in the tank yet)
But if i ever do get seahorse babies, i'll be sure to intensify the tank lights and BG thanks ;)
Just watched your video it was fantastic, I have seahorses and keep getting babies but struggling to get past 7 days before they all die, what do I do and what do i feed them plse
Every baby that survived (about 70%, compared to less than 1% in the wild)was sold to the aquarium industry. I am no longer breeding due to health reasons.
wow, I'd love to raise seahorses, you must put so much time into these creatures. What species of seahorse is it you raise? and where abouts in the world are you, I may buy a pair of seahorses for my tank.
Those huge tanks for the young must cost thousands!!!
These guys are h.kuda, this scale of operation requires 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. I'm in Ontario Canada. The entire setup not including time was about $10,000
That was so cool! I love seahorses. I had H reidi that gave birth a couple of times but the babies only survived a week or so and then died. I fed them newly hatched brine every day so I'm not sure what went wrong.
EXCELLENT JOB! Not only on the vid., but on successfully raising that many seahorses from one birthing!!!!!! I tried that with my H. reidi with no success. I raised the artemia and did all that I was supposed to, but somewhere along the lines something kept happening. They would always be up at the surface (which is normal), but then they'd gulp air. Once they did this, they would spin out and not be able to eat. This would obviously lead to their death. Great job! Thanks for the vid..
Almost :-) They only eat live, moving things - but their food does have to be pretty small. Rotifers, copepods but mostly newly hatched baby brine shrimp - the sanfransico strain is small enough.
I wanna buy seahorses :O!

Before you buy them, ask to see them eat frozen mysis. If they aren't eating it now they will likely die before you can train them to eat it.

I've just noticed something! :o
How come the parents are brown but nearly all of the fry are orange/yellow?
Surley their genetics would mean that most are brown?? ;/

Water quality and appropriate food is all it takes. Brine shrimp are good but have to be decapsulated to eliminate shells and bacteria.

Absolutely awesome! I was completely transfixed & couldn't stop watching. The music you choose is perfect for this video too. Congrats!

I have always loved Seahorses and have a tank for my two. I'm hoping to be able to raise the fry as well as you have in the video.
You have done an awsome job and I love the song.
