The problem with Angel was that there wasn't necessarily a best episode per se. The show thrived on having good moments. The show was overall really good, but there were some really spectacular moments.
They look bored/bi-polar. I knew James wasnt British his accent slips many times in Buffy and Angel he says can't the American way still. I'm British I can tell haha
I know it's all been said before,but James does the best British accent for someone who isn't British. He had me convinced for years and he sounded so natural speaking that way. You know how some actors when they do an accent that isn't theirs,it's usually so fake it's painful? not James. such a talented guy <3. I love David too. the whole cast of Angel was brilliant.

Even today a lawsuit is filed against him(the 5th so far during his career) by an extra from a woman on the set of BONES. Personally I've seen James do other roles and he plays the same role. He doesn't have that much depth as an actor. When David played both Angelus and Angel you could tell a solid difference but when James was forced to play Spike with a soul, he played the same Spike. Spike was always on dimensional even when the character called for it. He's just a blah actor who has no range or depth. David is by far better.
@JackLivesTogether That's not necessarily true. Spike's character was so strongly admired that they decided to leave it fairly unchanged. James unfortunately wasn't granted a great chance throughout either series to allow his character to go through such a change as Angel's, so it's easy to say that Angel's more versatile as an actor. Then again, almost no one from the entire cast of Buffy or Angel had such an opportunity as Angel.
@yoruketseki It isn't just Angel/Spike it's other characters, were James continues to play the cocky 'bad ass' character, even when it doesn't call for it. He's got no real range nor depth as an actor.

He maintained some of his original character, which one should expect, but he certainly saw change and development throughout the series. Again, though, his character in the beginning was so admired that there wasn't a whole lot of reason to change him much. It wouldn't be right to the story to force his character to change to the extreme degrees that Angel did
@yoruketseki He went from evil to a lighter version of evil. It wasn't a drastic change that should have occured when he got a soul. He played Spikes till like the cocky vampire who sometimes cared for the well-being of people. To me Spike wasn't developed enough for someone getting a soul.
Just because a character is 'admired' doesn't mean you shouldn't allow them to become different; or develop, and to me James just didn't have it in him to convey it.

But, I didn't have a problem with anyone (that I can think of) in the cast of Buffy. I think they were all good actors and became better as they progressed through the show and I think Joss did an excellent job with everyone and their characters and development. Watch the episode of Buffy when the Judge was the big bad, season 2.The judge said that spike stank of humanity. He had part of his soul, wheras Angelus didn't retain any of his. I did a whole college paper on how Spike was never fully evil and was deserving of the Shanshu Prophecy. Best homework I've ever had :)
@blueiceangelus Correction, The Judge said "You two stink of humanity" He was also referring to Drusilla as well, "You share affection and jealousy." That was his reasoning SOMETHING Angelus felt for Darla. Angelus wasn't horrific until Darla got her hooks into him. She made him what he was.
No offense but I was glad that the Shanshu was Angel's he deserve it. That would have annoyed me if it was for Spike. Though Spike may have had 'humanity' he only used it recently.

Also, when William was human he was a very good man whereas Liam was a drunken womanizer. If Spike was really evil and just being good for Buffy, he would not have stuck around to protect Dawn after Buffy had died. He was good. He could have found a way to be evil even with the chip if he truly wanted to.
And the times that he was mean to Buffy, it was usually because of how horrible she was to him. She kept yanking him back and forth and playing with his feelings for her. He was truly trying to fight against his nature, which is more than Angelus ever did. Angelus would never have let the chip get in the way of being pure evil. I really could go on and on. I'm not trying to sound like I hate Angel/Angelus, because I really don't - I love both characters, just Spike more as the show progressed.

@JackLivesTogether Well I disagree with you on that one for several reasons, First off the Reason that David played Angelous and Angel so different was because he was instructed to because Angelous relished being totally evil where as Angel could never excus his actions. However Spike was a different kind of character and he always made amendz or was at peace with what happened. Even after he got his soul he still understood his role as a vampire and was unappologetic about it.

@dieselskyy David is a decent actor, but James is so much better. If you watch any work that he has done and look at acting alone, he'll probably be one of the best, if not the best, in the group. His portrayal of Spike is incredible, obviously, and if you look at any of the other character he's played - Captain John on "Torchwood," Buzz Aldrin in "Moonshot," Brainiac on "Smallville," etc. - you can see how insanely talented he is. He's such an underrated actor.

@JackLivesTogether That's not necessarily true. Spike's character was so strongly admired that they decided to leave it fairly unchanged. James unfortunately wasn't granted a great chance throughout either series to allow his character to go through such a change as Angel's, so it's easy to say that Angel's more versatile as an actor. Then again, almost no one from the entire cast of Buffy or Angel had such an opportunity as Angel.

@yoruketseki It isn't just Angel/Spike it's other characters, were James continues to play the cocky 'bad ass' character, even when it doesn't call for it. He's got no real range nor depth as an actor.

@JackLivesTogether I disagree. Spike went from an eviscerate-all, punk-ass, cocky villain to a self-redemption seeking sentimental hero. He maintained some of his original character, which one should expect, but he certainly saw change and development throughout the series. Again, though, his character in the beginning was so admired that there wasn't a whole lot of reason to change him much. It wouldn't be right to the story to force his character to change to the extreme degrees that Angel did

@yoruketseki He went from evil to a lighter version of evil. It wasn't a drastic change that should have occured when he got a soul. He played Spikes till like the cocky vampire who sometimes cared for the well-being of people. To me Spike wasn't developed enough for someone getting a soul.
Just because a character is 'admired' doesn't mean you shouldn't allow them to become different; or develop, and to me James just didn't have it in him to convey it.

@JackLivesTogether Haha, well, neither of us wrong; we're just speaking different opinions. I don't necessarily want to convert you to see how I do, so I'm not going to tell you "he was indisputably a good actor". But, I didn't have a problem with anyone (that I can think of) in the cast of Buffy. I think they were all good actors and became better as they progressed through the show and I think Joss did an excellent job with everyone and their characters and development. I'm not a diehard fan..

@JackLivesTogether Spike didn't change that much after he got his full soul back is because he still had part of his soul, even when he was "evil". Watch the episode of Buffy when the Judge was the big bad, season 2.The judge said that spike stank of humanity. He had part of his soul, wheras Angelus didn't retain any of his. I did a whole college paper on how Spike was never fully evil and was deserving of the Shanshu Prophecy. Best homework I've ever had :)

@blueiceangelus Correction, The Judge said "You two stink of humanity" He was also referring to Drusilla as well, "You share affection and jealousy." That was his reasoning SOMETHING Angelus felt for Darla. Angelus wasn't horrific until Darla got her hooks into him. She made him what he was.
No offense but I was glad that the Shanshu was Angel's he deserve it. That would have annoyed me if it was for Spike. Though Spike may have had 'humanity' he only used it recently.

@JackLivesTogether I know that he said they both stank of humanity, but the conversation wasn't directed at Dru, so I didn't include it. Angelus did not feel affection for Darla. Also, when William was human he was a very good man whereas Liam was a drunken womanizer. If Spike was really evil and just being good for Buffy, he would not have stuck around to protect Dawn after Buffy had died. He was good. He could have found a way to be evil even with the chip if he truly wanted to.

And the times that he was mean to Buffy, it was usually because of how horrible she was to him. She kept yanking him back and forth and playing with his feelings for her. He was truly trying to fight against his nature, which is more than Angelus ever did. Angelus would never have let the chip get in the way of being pure evil. I really could go on and on. I'm not trying to sound like I hate Angel/Angelus, because I really don't - I love both characters, just Spike more as the show progressed.

@JackLivesTogether Just because he got a soul, doesn't mean he was a totally different character. Angelus was different because he was a truely EVIL character. Spike wasn't.

@twilightluver545 I'm sorry but if a thing didn't have a soul then suddenly got a feel of humanity, it would be different.
Spike was a vampire, though he wasn't as EVIL as Angelus he was still evil. He still slaughtered mothers, babies, children, and slayers. Though he wasn't as evil as Angelus he wasn't all that good either.

@JackLivesTogether i KNOW he's not all that good. but he was certainly not as evil to the core as Angelus was. I mean, he cared for buffy before he even had a soul. I think when he got a soul, he didn't change alot, because most of him changed when he fell in love. That's just opinion i guess but....

@twilightluver545 See, thats' were our opinions differ. Sure he loved Buffy, but I don't think that made him 'good' because he was still pretty awful to her and to her friends even when he had those feelings.
I just felt like there was no difference to him, and something without a soul would be different. I just didn't like how it was handled.

@JackLivesTogether Well I disagree with you on that one for several reasons, First off the Reason that David played Angelous and Angel so different was because he was instructed to because Angelous relished being totally evil where as Angel could never excus his actions. However Spike was a different kind of character and he always made amendz or was at peace with what happened. Even after he got his soul he still understood his role as a vampire and was unappologetic about it.

@dieselskyy Sorry but i think James Marsters is an increeeeeeeedible actor!! The way he turned somany people from angel to spike fans and just makes you fall in love with him everytime he talks on screen is amazing.. but i do really love david boreanaz and bones :) season 6 on sept 23rd!!!!

@dieselskyy David is a decent actor, but James is so much better. If you watch any work that he has done and look at acting alone, he'll probably be one of the best, if not the best, in the group. His portrayal of Spike is incredible, obviously, and if you look at any of the other character he's played - Captain John on "Torchwood," Buzz Aldrin in "Moonshot," Brainiac on "Smallville," etc. - you can see how insanely talented he is. He's such an underrated actor.
