I love all three porsches but would't the turbo have problems in a real competitive race because of turbo lag? I assume that turbo-lag would make it very hard to compete once the track is full of cars trying to beat each other. Just by itself in a track, the turbo might lap it quicker, but not with 40 other cars, turbo-lag would make the car unpredictable, not to mention the thermal bomb the turbo has on its rear and maybe even reliability, which makes the GT a better choice on the track.

turbos don't effect racing negatively since you are always in the power band. turbos suck for autocross or street where you can't always have the revs high. If turbos kick in at 4,000 rpm, and you shift to keep the rpm's from 5,000 to 7500, you get what i'm saying? preference is another story though.

@viasevenvai The problem with turbos is that their power band is so narrow as you've just alluded to. And even on the track it's difficult to keep the power exactly in range...You don't want to take a corner at 5000rpm because half way through the exit you are going to have to change... so in that sense turbos are at a disadvantage to an NA engine (assuming all else is equal, like power)

@2007TypeR i appreciate your comment after 8 months but i don't think you have a point. not all turbos give you a narrow band of power. most transmissions, especially close ratio ones will only drop your rpms by about 1,500rpms. Also, in a corner you won't be accelerating until after the apex, so the idea of shifting mid corner doesn't even matter. Basically I'm just defending the idea that a turbo is inferior on the track. It's fine especially if you have the gearing and the traction :)

Well generally we have classes of racing so you tend only to be racing with other turbo cars. My view is that if everything else is equal in terms of car that a NA engine is preferably to a turbo engine of equal power. So you'd rather than a NA 500hp engine than a turbo'd engine developing the same power.

Turbo's aren't inferior but i fundamentally believe that NA is better to drive.

one kicks in at low RPM, the other at higher RPM, so there.

i have absolutely no idea why GT2s aren't used for racing alongside GT3s

@AmemiyaRx8 no you are absolutely right. Porsche isn't some car with an aftermarket turbo kit. They specifically design their cars with turbo systems that have such little lag that they don't have a disadvantage like a normal turbo setup.

The cayman T is a (heavily) tuned up streetcar, the gt3 is a purposebuilt racer.

Rumour has it the cayman is the best porsche out there at the moment, IF you put in an LSD.

The Cayman is designed for turning fast lap times on a road course, not doing donuts. Mid engined cars with super sticky tires, driven by people who don't own them aren't ideal cars for spinning tires in circles. What is impressive is that a street car that doesn't look like much crossed the finish line just 2 feet behind a stripped Cup car on slicks.
