Pretty interesting. When I lived in the Philippines and visited some of the rice fields all the work was done by hand (planting, harvesting, etc). Time consuming but the workers had no choice as they couldnt afford to buy machines to help them.
I always wondered exactly how rice was cultivated because the rice patty fields I see on TV look nothing like the grains of rice I buy at the grocery store.
I actually learned something on YouTube. Go figure?
Don't know a lot about rice, but I do know when it is planted its in a large pool of water about 3 inches deep. What I didn't think about or realize is that during harvest the water is gone and it's rather dry.
There are some of these that are more combine like. They have short little arms that send the rice into a tiny truck that drives along next to it. Compared to what my grandfather used to use, this is not even as tall as on of the tires!
Japanese think of genmai as peasant food and would never consider eating it unless they are Macrobiotic or into health food. Historically, only the aristocrats ate polished grain leaving the more healthy whole grain to the farmers.
I've been wondering how it was done for quite some time now, sure is nice living right next to a small field! :) Something you city folk can't experience ;)
i've only begun to explore black rice. i'm not sure where it is grown, but it is definitely a different species. i really want to try it, it is very healthy too!
It is a cool process, but it makes my walk to school much less scenic. Until they start burning the fields that is, which is always interesting as well.

In California's Sacramento Valley they use the big combine harvesters like you see they use to harvest wheat.

so the community reserved that field for rice and consumed by them i guess,,, and no one else?

I dunno about the rice but I could go for a informational video on that sexy narrator. Less rice, more narrator!

Yeah, in fact, they need the field to be dry so they can harvest it. If it rains too much, then the rice will over-ripen before it can be cut.

Sounds just like the story of how white flour became so popular or commonplace.
Consider me a healthy peasant! :)

Why that rice machine needed the caution horn when going in reverse gets me though lol

Welcome back!
It seems like most moving vehicles here have a back-up alarm including everyday cars. Overly cautious I guess.

A miniature harvester - cute.
With each polishing more nutrition is lost.
Genmai is the best form to eat rice.
Your videos are becoming my favorite.
Love your grounded style.

Thank you very much! I only eat genmai and I love the reaction from Japanese people when I tell them this! haha
