roy samuel reid aka I-roy. same league with U-roy n dillinger. his words are very meaningful, but u gotta listen to the music several times, u know, 'to be in tune with it'. i got most of his albums.
The great Roy Reid died of heart failure back in 99... He was homeless at the time of his death at the young age of 55. This footage was shot at the Hammersmith Palais, London in 95. I was there that night and met Roy briefly about an hour before he went on stage. always my favourite toaster, the voice will live on for generations to discover and enjoy...
Bwooy, the heavens will never be the same again...a whollipa artist deh Nesta, mikey outta control dread,Pitah the stepping razor,Joseph cultural hill,Jacob killer miller,Augustus pablo,Bingy bunny,Carlton Barrett.Satan beware!
I Roy was the best, intellectual, witty dj. Cats like Professor Nuts, Charlie Chaplin (the yard dj), Trinity, Tony Rebel, Big Youth, and Philip Levi, and Smiley Culture, are in that tradition... the literati. My favorite dj, the W.C. Fields of toasting, king I Roy.
It's not widely known that the king of all DJ toasters was homeless when he passed in 1999 from heart failure at the age of 55. God bless you Roy Reid, i'm so glad that you touched me.
who knows what the mental jamaicans at the start are saying, at the start of the original recording, something like " 10 cent....i'm unnnuh support that" or something
Mi sad fi hear seh I Roy passed away too. Mi never know that and I try to keep up with the great legends of reggae muzik past and present. Underatted toaster in his time this tune was one of his best.
The great I Roy. I was blessed to be at this gig, surely one of his last on these shores, at the Palais Hammersmith. I managed to spend a few minutes with him before this perfomance. Roy Reid one of the truly great Jamaican toasters. 'Don't check me with no lightweight stuff'
I Roy was more powerful, more cutting, more swift, more poetic, often funnier, than most of the very best during that Golden Age of early reggae.
Never appreciated as much as the others whose names are well-known-- I Roy (Roy Reid) was as much "the intellectual" as Big Youth (Manley Buchanan) was raw soul power.
Jah rastafari, accept this great legend into your blossom. It is sad to know that daddy I-Roy is gone. One of the best reggae artists. Was he U-Roy's brother?
Did I just read that Papa I Roy had passed? HOW DID I MISS THAT? If this info. is accurate, I'll sieze this opportunity to say Adieu to a great MAN who fought through his music to promote peace, love, understanding and equal rights for every being on this planet called earth. May his soul rest in perfect peace in JAH.
