  • This really is amazing, I would pay you to do it to mine lol

  • 9:09 you could have tried a thin foggy fiber plastic that that goes under the mesh so that the light would spread out like in fiber optic cables.

  • lol beginning made me laugh. only after you said it was joke.

  • wow great.

  • @sklobet Thanks

  • Add third led ;)

  • put case neons in it

  • I did something similar, and I used ink jet paper between me and the light. I think it works well but I would think that you could see the white through the mesh screen. If I was doing this I would paint the paper black but use as little paint as possible. Anyways great video!

  • @hartk5353 Okay...but I have never seen them anywhere that thin and trust me I have searched everywhere..on several occasions...so if you ever come across them online let me know.

  • or you could have got 4" Cold Cathode Lights or sanded down the top of the LED to diffuse it at reflect the light everywhere

  • @hartk5353 How would a 4" cold cathode fit..there was 3/32" of space......

  • @WestCoastMods because they are 4" long and You could have laid it in the fan Where you put the strip of leds and It would have been one continuous glow and they are only like 1/16" thick so it would have fit just fine

  • @hartk5353 I tam pretty sure 4" cold cathodes are the same size thick as a standard 12" cold cathode which is abut a 1/2" thick..just 4" long. I had to use LED strips because they were the only thing that was about 1/16". If you know where 4" cathodes are that are 1/16" please send me a link. Thanks

  • @WestCoastMods OK well I bought some from a local computer shop for Modding my Xbox 360 with a window and green ccfl

  • @hartk5353 And they were 1/16" thick...can you send me a pic at westcoastmodz at gmail

  • If you still are looking for the reflection that you were origionally going for, take apart an old LCD laptop monitor or LCD computer monitor and remove the reflective films that are used to reflect the backlight in the monitor. Play with the different screens by flipping and rotating each of them against each other to get the backlighting to work exactly how you want it to look! This may be your best bet to get the lighting to spread correctly! Gravitymanss OUT!

  • @gravitymanSS Thanks bro, will keep that in mind for the future.

  • add 3 led

  • ok i c, try the chrome paint

  • just buy the led fan

  • @ribak1983 Thats not the look I was going for, but for some that would be a quick alternative.

  • piece of wax paper over the lights

  • @heatfilter Thanks bro,

  • I like the way you experiment on things to make the work better sir.. Makes you a good scientist. Cool video and I learned every minute of it.

  • @kokoytoyi Thanks bro, glad you find my vids helpful

  • first thing i thought when you said your idea was led strip

  • @HITURA69 Yep....

  • might have tried a piece of frosted Plexiglas it should diffuse the light pretty good especially if u made it thinker in the center to gather more light since its farther from the corner leds

  • @theflashjaxx Thanks, yeah in the end I did you a piece of frosted plexiglass, I was in one of the later parts.

  • looks nice

  • Good job, to finally finding what you wonted.

  • Sorry bro but foil was a really silly idea lol. A diffuser would have solved your issue.

  • @acer0169 Sometimes the silliest ideas turn out to be the best. I was willing to try anything to get the effect i wanted, and in the end I did settle for a diffuser, but it to did not produced the look I was going for. But it was okay as you probably saw in later vids.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • Im wondering y you didnt just make a diffuser. just a piece of thin plastic thats sandblasted on the one side. put it in front of the leds and it glows troughout the piece.

  • Yeah, in a later vid you will see that's what I did, however it does not diffuse like you make it sound. I original tried this method and because there is little to no space between the LED's and the etched acrylic, there's no room for the light to diffuse. So that's why I went through so much trouble trying to find a way for the lights to diffuse, to no avail. I ultimately went back to the etched acrylic.

And really my goal was not diffuse the light as it was to make the area transmit a glow.

  • First thing that crossed my mind:

Cover the inside of the mesh with a bit of paper.

  • Yeah the paper work to some degree, but not exactly what I was going for.

    Thanks

    LazyMan :-)

  • yep, love this mod so far...just subscribed!!! great videos!

  • Thanks Bro!

  • why not remove a red cathode from its surrond and put the cathode in it might give u the look u want and nice vid m8 :)

  • I think a cathode is to big to fit and I'm not sure if you can bend cathodes. Also why do they come in tubes, is it to protect the cathode, because they are sensitive or because the get pretty hot?

Nice suggestion, but I just don't think a cathode would work.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • i think the strip lights look good but what if u alternated the lights side by side instead of rows u know, it would have had less pin point light

  • Yeah, that definitely could have been a option, I just thought if it was going to be a pin point light, then I thought it looked better if they where lined up, as opposed to being staggered.

After installing a piece of red acrylic over the strip lighting it helped diffuse the pin point effect a little, so it's not as bad.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • Great job LazyMan, I want the same thing with blue lights in my new rig.

    Cheers,

    Steven

  • Thanks, I worked out all the kinks, so I hope it goes easier for you.

  • Just a helpful tip, instead of 2 rows of lights (which I think is freaking awesome) you could use a small cold cathode, which might fit not sure, or diffusion paper instead of aluminum foil, or maybe one of those see-through clip boards you see would properly spread the light if it was cut down to size. Still, excellent work!

  • After yiu watch rest of the vids in this series you will see that I final ended up with using a thin piece of red acrylic that I etched. turned out pretty nice.

    Cheers

    LazyMan ;-)

  • ...you have too much time on your hands...

...does your wife know what you are doing?

  • LOL!

I wished I had to much time on my hands, after working a 60+ hr work week, family time, and normal everyday things, it doesn't leave much time for much else. I try to squeeze in some mods when the wife isn't looking. So don't tell her....

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • Dang I'm happy I'm starting this stuff early in life!

  • Yep, don't wait till you have a wife, kids, full time job and responsibilities. oh and no money lol

  • Man I've been hearing this my entire life, you guys make it sound like having all those things isn't as good as having the free time :( It is quite discouraging!

  • Fantastic job sir. I am planning of buying the same cooler. I am just not sure I could duplicate your mods. Anyway, great job!!!!

  • You won't know till you try. Now that I've worked out all the kinks, it should go pretty easy, just time consuming. If you decide you want to do the same to your cooler, and you don't want to take it on yourself, PM me and we can work out a cost for me to do it. Already doing one for someone else, and there's another on in the works.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • what i used was a 1.5in or so piece of thin glass tube, i just attached the LEDs to the lends and the light traveled through the glass. it works great...

  • where's the vid?

  • I am sorry I was just describing it. I had put it in a clients comp. so I don't have any documentation of the process. Plus the computer is out of state. i might be able to recreate the scenario though. I will get to work asap.

  • Yeah, that would be great, Did you make a shroud for it too. curious how you fit a thin piece of glass tube in it, when there is less than a 1/16 of a inch, also how did you attached the glass tube to the fan housing. You should have your client send some pictures then post them on your channel or send me a copy.

    Thanks

    LazyMan ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • The LEDs look great. They are a lil too bright for me, I prefer the glowing effect that fills out the entire space. One way to achieve that is to place a dab of hot glue on each LED. Give it a test on a spare LED and tell me what you think.

  • Thanks for the tip, will try that on a spare one.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • i was flippin out at the beginning.. like WHAT NO MORE?!?! and then i looked at the time and xD. you almost got me!

  • Gotcha! I thought that would funny. :-)

  • As soon as I saw your first idea, I thought EL strips would be perfect for this.

  • Concern about how bright they are. Some have told me, even though they light up, they don't glow very well.

Still debating, Thanks for your comment

    LazyMan :-)

  • YOU ARE THE MAN !!!

  • Thanks bro! Will you be subscribing to my channel?

  • lazyman just to share some info, the tiny screws that hold the socket 775/1366 parts to the HF are so delicate, i just installed 2 CM V8 both broken and i didn't do too much presure, so i had to replace the original screws, i found cause when i turn on the pc the HF was balancing from the side that was broken

  • Send me a PM, explaing more of what happen and how, also tell me what a HF is, having a brain fart.

I will see if i can help you once I understand your problem better. I've installed mine several times with no issues.

    LazyMan :-)

  • Also, I was thinking about if/when you go to water cool this build that the ideas become almost limitless! You think you can't sleep now trying to figure out how to mod the V8, think about how your life will be in when you consider the ways to run a loop, mount a pump, select a reservoir. Ahhh, good times ahead :)

  • Dude, aren't you so correct. I am already thinking about it, I plan on doing something I really never seen before.

It still is in the very early design phase.

It's funny, the V8 mod has caused me some sleepless nights, but if I'm not thinking about that one, there's another half dozen that keep me tossing and turning all night.

I bet you have had some of these yourself. Due share!

    Cheers Bro!

  • bloody hell after all of that

  • Yeah, what a shame, all that work and money just to come up with that. LOL

  • you could have 3 leds on the foil

2 bring on ends, and maybe drill into body so it would fit, put the dull one in

  • Like the way the strip lighting looks. I was going to suggest small (4" maybe) cold cathodes but I realized that there's no way they'll fit under the fan housing.

Nice job and keep the videos coming.

  • Thanks bro, Yeah, very limited space between the fan housing and the shroud.

  • great job the dual strips look good.

  • Thanks Bro!

  • just noticed that you were using a battery to test the led's

mabye you should try powering up the led's with your power supply

i dont no but the battery might not be giving the led's enough power

    just a thought

  • Exactly, The battery is a new 9v where as the strip lights require 12v for full illumination, so they will be a little brighter once they are connected to the PSU. As far as the 5mm LED test I ran, I used the appropriate resistor for 9v power supply.

    Thanks

    LazyMan :-)

  • can you upload the bits u cut out please!

    i enjoy watching your videos

you should try become a youtube partner

  • Got 2 more vids coming tonight with some of the material that I had to cut out of this vid.

    Partner hmm....

    LazyMan :-)

  • yeah thats the only way you can get videos over 10 minutes

but you have to sign up for google adsense and whatnot so it might not be worth it

  • I may think about it someday, but for know I just need to make them into parts. It would be hard to keep ppl's attention for much longer than 10mins, even 10 mins is difficult.

  • I just spent 10 minutes reading through every comment hoping that you had the "ahah" moment. I think the problem here is that the only thing you can fit are LED's which have such a concentrated source that its gonna be near impossible to diffuse the light over the area you want short of using exotic materials. Also, I thought about filter gel lighting sheets (the kind they use to change the lighting color in theaters) above the LED strip for maybe a more diffused look.

  • Excellent idea, never thought about that, will have to look into that. I just made a 2 part vid thanking everyone for their wonderful suggestions and showing some of them in real life.

Sorry I wasn't able to mention this one, but I think this one may have some potential. The only problem that I noticed was that whatever I use, it's to close to the LED's, not allowing the light to diffuse enough.

But I will look into where I can get a sheet of this filter gel. If you have any links, please share

  • Yeah, the distance from the LED to the diffuser/defractor is such that the lighting is too concentrated to create a glow effect. Ok, try googling "Lee Filter Sheets". I'll do some more research on the effectiveness here. But at least I thought I'd share.

  • Thanks Bro, I will check them out after work tonight.

Appreciate all your help 2 more vids coming tonight.

    Your Friend

    LazyMan :-)

  • Hey buddy, i actually broke my V8 while modding and just purchased myself the Prolimatech Megahalem, I am gonna mod the V8 onto the Megahalem as I dont like the plain metal look. Thinking about returning the Megahalem to buy the Shadow megahalem but dunno yet. What do you think my mod will turn out like?

  • Sorry... I have no idea, not sure exactly what you're going to do? btw how did you break the V8 ?

  • I snapped like one side of the fins off by accident when picking it up. It dropped and hit the heatpipes near the bottom which made the hanging parts beside the actualy v8 logo fall off. so its basically missing one half of the heatsink fins.

  • Oh Shit! that sucks!

  • Hey LM, really insightful on how you approach your builds. I'm very similar. When not satisfied, I will exhaust every option I can think of relentlessly. This might sound stupid, but what would happen if you turned the strip (just one) upside down and allowed some space between the mesh and the fan housing somehow? Is there space on the sides where the light would glow through? Or, is the strip the same on either side?

  • Thanks Bro, not sure I understand you suggestion.

  • Can you turn the strip upside down so the led's are facing toward the fan? If so, it might illuminate or glow better that way. Maybe it's different in person, but the lights seem really bright and blinding and I thought you wanted it to "glow."

  • yeah i could turn the strips up side down, but the strips themselves being about a 1/4" wide each would block the light and also how and what would I attach the strips to?

  • You use the force to keep the strips floating in air.

  • LOL I tried that, but for some reason it would not work!

    Thanks buddy

    LazyMan :-)

  • Have you tried frosted plexi? It doesn't take much to get a nice even glow across it.

  • No room for any type of plexi, acrylic, ect. But yes I have used plexi before, in fact I am going to use plexi where the blinking LED's are going.

  • The build is looking awesome so far man. The 2 led strip are going to look great. I have a simular rig to yours. I went with 2 4870x2's tho. I purchased it back in november so I have the first version P6t-D and a C0 i7. I am interested in how high you can get your qpi to as I've hit a wall at 217 x 21. Builds looking great man keep it up.

  • Thanks Bro, I haven installed windows yet, hope fully soon. get back to me, and I'll see what I can do.

  • Thanks Buddy! I appreciate those kind words. I always feel that I don't do enough, or that I could have done more quicker. It's an illness! LOL

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • Try coating the inside of the metal cover with a mirror paint/chrome reflect paint, it wont do much but it will diffuse the focused light and separate it a bit more

  • As you saw I tried reflective paint, which didn't work very well, as far as chrome paint, I have tried chrome paint on other things and chrome paint doesn't resemble real chrome at all, it's more like a glossy silver.

  • Hi there, I hope you find this comment before it get lost amongst the others.

Try putting a translucent strip accross the top. I dont think the issue is brightness, I think it's actually carrying the light. A white translucent strip should accomplish this nicely.

    Regards.

  • Yeah, thanks for the suggestion, but there is no room under the shroud, and if I was to put it on top, you wouldn't be able to see the mesh, which would take away from the overall appearance.

I'm pretty satisfied with the strip lighting. I thing it goes good with the V8 theme.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • One more thing...I like the strip lighting, however, I'm not too crazy about the foil.

  • Yeah. I'm pretty satisfied with the strip lighting, and with to strips side by side there is no need for the foil, as the two strips take up all the space perfectly.

  • I'll definitely agree with TJ...your name might apply to other things...but definitely not with your computer builds/mods. 5/5

  • yeah, what he said. Nice mod bud!

  • Thats SWEET :D

  • Thanks

  • Looks good man. I like your final decision to go with the two strips. Nice mod again!!!

  • Thanks bro!

  • man its 2AM here, and im here watching your videos, thats how great they are! :P i love the way your brain works, soo genius! and so skillful, i cant wait to see the finished product!

  • Thank you for your support!

  • thought 6 is the nicest

  • strip lighting without the foil

  • Thanks bro!

  • lol you r one of the carzyest mods i have seen lol nice 5/5

  • Thanks Bro! I'm just having fun.

  • nice man looks nice. i wish i had some more cases to mod i sold all mine :(

  • You might be able to get 6' red cathodes, take the cathode out of the plastic casing and just use that. Awesome job though! 5/5

  • Nice suggestion, but unfortunately there's no space between the fan housing and the shroud. There's just enough space to get the 22gauge wiring between them.

  • nice mod, took a while but is worth it once u get it all running, i was just about to say to bad u couldn't get a little light strip, nice vid

  • Thanks Dude!

  • no problem

  • dear lazyman was just wondering what type of monitor will you be using for your awesome rig...may i suggest a samsung lcd hd monitor....had my eye on this model for quite a while..UN46B6000VF....i just think the red will match your awesome (x2) tower pretty well..also samsung is the leading brand in lcds...just my opinion anyways....keep the updates coming.

  • Thanks Bro! I have a 30" for my main monitor and a 20" as a secondary monitor. I plan on buying another 30" for my computer room.

IMO Pioneer then Panasonic make the best HDTV's.

I tried using a LCD HDTV as a monitor and also have a HTPC hooked up to a Pioneer PRO-151FD KURO

I was not 100% impressed, remember the max resolution will only be 1920 X 1080, so text especially small fonts are not very sharp, with a 30" monitor the max resolution is 2560 X 1600 which produces very sharp crisp text.

  • love to watch your vids....checked online everyday for your updates...waited 2 weeks.......looks like your only alternative is red 4" neon to get the light spread evenly but it wont fit behind the mesh....... p.s.i think the strip lights look pretty good never seen strip lighting like that before....your really good

  • nice man. I enjoy watching your videos.

    thanks

  • Thanks!

  • Did that tag say the LEDS were 18.99?

  • Yeah, the Linrose LED's are some what expensive, but they are one of the highest quality LED's you can buy.

    Google Linrose LED's

  • awesome vid bro ! like allways i enjoy watching it ! 5 *

i just moded my dominator airflow ram cooler ! i will see !

  • Thanks my friend, I also plan to do a lighting mod to the my Ram Cooler.

Are you posting a vid on your Ram Cooler Mod?

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • Thanks dude!

  • hope ur satisfied

  • Yes sir! did you like the strip lighting?

  • Yes i did sir ! , ive never seen strip lighting before ,but im sure ill watch ur vids again when im gna add some lights in my case, , i got old fuc*d case ,and i7 920 in it :P (what a shame), , i bet everyone liked the stripped light

  • Yeah, I know what you're talking about, I plan on using some transparent red plexi where the blinking LED's are going, but there is no room to use plexi on the top and bottom.

    Thanks for the suggestion

    LazyMan :-)

  • Thanks Bro!

  • frosted arcylic with led's at each end passing light through the centre of the arcylic will give the glow effect i think you want, but finding arcylic thin enough could be a problem

  • Yeah no room for plexi, it would have to be paper thin to work, then I would have the problem of attaching the LED's to the side of the very thin plexi.

    Thanks for your suggestion

    LazyMan :-)

  • dang if i do a mod like that and can't figure out how to do it i would just throw it out the window lol

  • Com 'on Bro, don't be a quitter! lol

I almost did the same thing.

  • looks incredibly good ... so good that i want to steal it from you :D

P.S. where did you order the strip lighting from ?

  • I actually bought it a Fry's Electronics, I had to shorten my vid to make it comply with YT's rules, so I couldn't finish my thoughts on camera.

The brand is Linrose be prepared to be shocked when you see the prices, they are somewhat expensive.

    Google Linrose LED's

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • This might sound nuts, but my mind goes to thinking like a photographer might. I would find a way to defuse the light. Try putting a white cloth or white paper on the mesh and paint the area around the LEDs white too. This way the light illuminates from the side of the fan evenly. (Just a thought bro)

  • if foil didnt do it i dont think white paint would do : (

  • Thanks bro, yeah I tried a white cloth and it diffused the light ,but it didn't carry the light to area's where there where no LED's. Also I not sure white paint will work either, it would soften the light, just like the white cloth did.

My goal was to get evenly distributed light to all area's, the srtip lighting being the best. The problem is there just isn't enough room where the mesh comes in contact with the fan housing to let light flow freely.

I will show my findings in the next vid.

  • Success!!!

  • What about using EL strip?

  • will look into that. thanks

  • ahhaha You thought real hard for that mod.

  • Thanks bro, many sleepless nights!

  • "Dont forget to sub and rate and..yeah thanks you!"

    Naaaa just kiddin! xD

  • LOL!

  • Amazing thought processing. lol, I'm still working on figuring out the basics(spent hours looking at dif LED's specs) & you're figuring out which mod you like best8D

    Always enjoy your creativity. 5*'s

  • Thanks bro, once you get past the basics, then it should make some sense. But I am so confused when it comes to wiring and wiring schematics.

    It makes my head hurt

    LazyMan :-)

  • very nice job.. It looks great 5/5.. did you think about using a piece of plexi and drilling holes in the edges and putting leds in for distributed lighting kind of like keyboard lighting? or would that not fit? just a thought.

  • Yeah, there's no room, take a look at a fan and lay something flat on it side and you will see there's no room, at the highest point in the fan housing.

  • I have an ideia for it, i don't know if a piece of slim mirror or a piece of a CD can fit on this tiny area. But try to cut pieces of CD in squares, and using a heat gun make it curve. After put it on the fan. If it fits ok. But this lighting stripes is much more cool. Regards from Brazil, your mods are genious. =)

  • Thanks bro, I think I'm going to stick with the strip lighting.

I kinda like it to, goes with the V8.
