  • Beautiful :)

  • Thank you Steve ! The Song is one of the 25 best masterworks !

  • I'm sure that the one dislike must have clicked on the wrong button by mistake-how could ANYBODY dislike this? Steve Howe is my guitar god and has been for many, many years!

  • So good it hurts! Thank you, Steve.

  • OMG. So beautiful. I honestly never paid that close attention to the guitar part of this song because the vocals and lyrics sort of captivate me but SH's part is so harmonically rich and wonderfully voiced. Totally different level of writing than most of his contemporaries. Plus how cool is it that these clips exist?

  • this IS THE Steve Howe, and this IS amazing...one of the most underrated Yes songs..a masterpiece.

  • I humbly BOW before the master...Mr. Howe, you sir..are a guitar GOD.

  • is this steve howe or a dude that can do his stuff with finesse?

  • I fell in love with a girl because of this very song!! This has brought tears to my eyes!!

  • Those are some delicately gifted fingers.- I have seen Yes seven times- twice VERY

VERY close to Steve, and it is the tenderness which always impresses me. You can see the tenderness in how he plays, so melodic and perfect. Two other impressive

classical guitarists ( though lesser known ) are Russel Donnellon & Daniel Strong

  • I have no enough words to describe what happens in me with the "magic touch" of Howe in the guitar. It is simply the deep knowledge about sounds but pauses and silences too, as a way to allow you get involved into the music being developing, and feeling each of the notes. (Excuse my bugs, English is not my first language)

  • Pure magic! I love it!

Jack, from Brazil Steve's fan eternal♥

  • My undisputed No 1 song from YES. The words of Turn of the Century carry such emotion.

However, Steve's guitar work is sublime, and makes this song a classic.

This composition just isn't long enough, such a shame he didn't play the complete song, then I could listen to it all day. We can all but dream.....

  • This is magic!

  • One of Yes's best and most complete compositions.

  • i want sheet music or tabs to this, ne one know where to get it?

  • @FudgeBison Yep...edit this vid, and keep replaying both guitar and vid....lol...easiest way...

  • @drServutis Hey robbertjohnson487... or robbie... or... drServutis (or should I call you the sperm bank,?) That nice mexican garbageman you were kissing last week would love to go out with you with out having to "pay" you for it. I know what your thinking, that you don't want to date anybody you have charged for sex, but just think of the diner and movie as your payment before you "gobble his man goo". Being the "catcher" do you get to choose the film and restaurant robbie? oh sorry drServutis?

  • @drServutis I didn't konw that steve listened to Steve Howe robbie. Did you guys listen to this when you were sucking his..."chocloate popsickle"... isn't that what you called it robbie?

  • @drServutis Oh robbie. I know thanksgiving has been hard on you, breaking up with your Nigerian pizza boy and all. But now stating that you are in love with me (you want my "man goo" robbie? ) and getting a YT account with almost the same spelling as mine, pretending to be me and being mean to people so you can have my man goo all to your self?Robbie i had no idea you had these feelings for me. I am actually flattered you took the time to do this, an exression of your love for me. :)

  • A great example of Steve's use of chord structure and single note phrases intertwining with melody lines

  • This track is almost unbearingly beautiful and the album was a mainstay on any vacation or mountain trip. One thing that Yes always did for me was that they could take your mind on a complete ride just with the melody alone, and here Steve is evoking the same experience; reproducing with soul and perfection the feeling of the song using that big Gibson Jumbo which sounds just amazing. Inspiring.

  • Every time I hear this I get choked up. It makes me think of when I was 18 and my wife and I use to take excursions to the mountains and listen to this on cassette while driving. We had no clue where we were going or where we'd end up. We just drove and saw the sights along the way. Back then things were so simple. Not a care in the world did we have. It brings back so many memories.

  • @Helicon2112 beautiful..................

  • Years and years of listening to this song and it still blows be away. That is a sign of something that stands the test of time. A lesson to be learned.

  • one guitarist that can almost be compared to steve is richie blackmore.

  • yngwie may be this classical master as some have said but in the end, 40 years from now noone will care but what Steve Howe has done is timeless

for one reason He is a better creator and writer and in the end no matter how Technical you are if you cant express it in something original and soulful forget it

Yes is timeless and so is Steve Howe

You want Technical ask Al Dimeola

Hes Technically Brillant more so then yngwie ,Yet noone can remember anything he as ever done

  • point being that both guitarists are great albeit different

  • love to go to bed with that man

  • Steve Howe is a musical genius.

  • Turn of the Century is an absolute MASTERPIECE!

  • Yes, there is genius in Howe's guitar playing, but I must say that I am much more impressed by the astral beauty of that melody. For me, these notes are as beautiful as a clear summer night's sky. The quest for more notes per minute seem so futile when the soul can fly on such a "simple" tune.

  • hi sorry to play devils advocate here, by yngwie is a classical master and is more versed in classical guitar playing than most guitar players on the planet. he may be famous for shreding neo-classical rock but have you even seen him with a classical guitar? he plays it just as convincing as howe, and is a far superior technical player. i really dont see how you can knock yngwie here, no matter how great howe is, both great players

  • @Helicon2112

You are correct, Helicon. He is, indeed, playing with his middle and ring fingers and with a pick simultaneously. It's called Hybrid Picking and is a method of guitar playing that is extremely difficult to master.

  • I am like a child at Christmas finding these tutorials by the master, Steve Howe. This is fantastic; a guitar lesson from one of the most incredible musicians and gentlemen of our time. Thank you Steve for taking the time to document your unparralleled talents so the rest of us can marvel and learn!

  • bravo maestro!!

  • I listened to this song for many years just loving the sonic buzz that it created for me. Then I checked out the lyrics, and was blown away all over again.

  • Im guessing it did not take him too long to realize there was something special.

His C chord dont sound like mine! Or D, E ,F, etc.... His ability to bring chords and notes to life is special.

I remember seeing Yes in the late 70's(Going for the One) and just being floored.

TOTC is a very special song.

  • Thank you. This song has special meaning for me. I greatly appreciate your posting this here.

  • He does it with such ease and grace. Nothing short of outstanding.

  • ....it has brought tears to my eyes. Their music is one of the reasons I continue to remain.

  • this song can bring tears to your eyes~

  • Magic, mystic, ethereal. A masterpiece!!

  • The end part (from 0:44 on) is actually played on a 12-string, and sounds even more beautiful and more haunting.

From beginning to end, this is probably my favourite Yes song. The live version on youtube is amazing.

  • I still remember the day I listenined to that track (and the whole GFTO LP) for the first time, and the hackles on my neck stood up at the sheer beauty of that guitar part. i will debate anyone that Steve is the best Guitar player since chet Atkins....

  • one of my favorite pieces of music, ever... thank you, steve.

  • howe es mi maestro csm!!!!!!! + +

  • @GETaYOTA wow can you shut your mouth???

  • its called vibrato asshole

  • what chord is he playing @ 1:03?

  • Only a beautiful soul could write and play something like this! Those hands were made for no other work but this.

  • es mágico

  • Thats superb

  • I like to listen to sth. when there was still hope in sth.

  • MAGNIFIQUE I was impressed by such work...bravo

  • I just realized these were posted on you tube. This Is incredible. I will be up watching this for hours. Thank you for posting them.

  • One of my idols :-)

  • i would love to hear this on a classical guitar.

  • how is it even possible for a human to createsomething with this much beauty and magic! Steve Howe is no musical genius; he is a musical god. Also yes, this song may not be that hard, but i would like to see eddie or jimi try to play Sketches in the Sun... bullshit Howe is not a great guitar player!

  • He plays the guitar like a cello player would play, by the rocking of his vibrato on the fretboard. He is one of those guitarist who has the most beautiful fluid fingers I have ever seen...

  • SOOO many players can learn from this, I can"t take all the technic freaks who think speed and stunts on the guitar are what its about. This is beautiful and melodic, pure music. It's what music is really about. Steve plays what the song needs, like no other in rock music. David Gilmour is also very good but much different. They make every note count as part of the song.

  • Absolutly agree. Mr. Howe and Mr. Gilmour can do more with one note then Mr.Malmsteen can with one hundred.

  • @drServitus

meh, I love shred guitar and acoustic solo arrangements like this.

But even when I was 15 I thought Yngwie was just kind of a showy prick. I hope a lot of other guitarists would agree that, while technically impressive, his music isn't much to listen to.

If you want good shred, you can never go wrong with Paul Gilbert (or Buckethead, who has the same machine-gun picking prowess along with incredible tritone tapping and excellent bluegrass picking)

  • you're right, because Steve Howe has a classically and symphonic inspiration unlike other great guitarists, so I think it's better than Trevor Rabin and other...

  • The thing about Steve is that he can play anything you want him to play.

He's fast but not a "shredder"

Just listen to the work he does in "Sound Chaser".

I dare any shredder to replicate that piece.

  • @larypg Cant forget Steve Hackett either...

  • more than just technique, more than just theory, this peace speaks to the heart. simply amazing

  • perfect

  • I am trying to learn how to play this song. It is a really nice piece and Howe is a great guitarist. I was trying to learn how to play by replaying certain parts and they are just too fast for me. I was wondering if you could make an instructional video on how to play this song (maybe by stating the frets and strings?). That would be just awesome. I tried searching on the net but could not find anything

  • Steve Howe is not a great guitarist.

A great guitarist is Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix.

Steve Howe is a genius .

    A god damn living Mozart!

None of his contemporaries are in his league.

    He's all by himself

  • one of best tune

  • christgod,, perhaps my favorite song on all time..haint no easy thang that...

  • Perhaps something of off Topographic? It is great to see these melodies played without any backing, for the pure beauty of what they are.

  • This is on Going for the One. Wonderful tune. I wish there were more ballads by Yes

  • What a beautiful piece from a gorgeous song!

  • For me this is the (prettiest) sound :) was busy do you and I right today along with i seen all good people so on and so on.. I'm forever greatful for this in such tough economic times! gba

  • Love to learn this whole thing one my favorites too. which brand/model guitar is recommendedto get that sound? ty Steve :)

  • One of my absolute all time favorites!!!

  • oh my god that guitar sounds phenomenal

  • snowyowl1959 -- it's Steve. No one else in the world could play all these tunes. And, yes, he has artistic license to change a note here or there -- he always has.

  • Deep stuff from Steve, what a great song!

  • Steve You dont have idea about how great contribution to the music and unbelievable good feeling you are giving at the humana race. I heard this song for a years and in my hard moment, this sound had save my life. That is complete true. I said. I dont mind wherever I go when I die but always if I can hear Yes music. Thank so much Yes, from Mérida Yuc. México

    Armando

  • hellmuth.. do you mind if i borrow your tradition of getting lifted and listening to this jam

  • man.. i used to get so high and listen to this beautiful song. this song was like my anthem a few years ago, great times!

  • Romantic, Wonderfull, The greatest guitarist

    of Yes and Progressive Rock

    I'm the one fan

  • "Magnifico" is the greatest response from lucauly... Yes, Steve How is quite simply magnifico!

  • why does the guitar not move AT ALL? it's so weird!

  • it's on a stand, of course.

They are played on a stand and are played in

a cleaner style for the camera and the student.

He's really making an effort to make this accessible to non-professional players.

  • erm...something wierd going on here...I mean..got my doubts on that first chord..surely it's played in first position?Am addB?...and not that open [playing with an E on the sixth..something not sitting right here..some of the expression was great..but some bits lacking...???

very very useful...but this IS NOT STEVE!..this is a clone playing?

  • Dude - You actually watched the clip and can't tell it IS SH playing? lol... Do you even know how to tune a guitar?

  • beautiful

  • Howe comes up with the most haunting tunes...

  • Pure beauty...and what a great guitar sound

  • One of the greatest love songs ever written. The lyrics tell a wonderful story. I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting Steve Howe in L.A..I wish I had the guitar he is playing here. : )

  • Steve Howe has made a great version of this song with Annie Haslam of Renaissance.

  • wow

  • ... i can't think

  • Capolavoro compositivo, assieme alla voce di Jon Anderson raggiunge la massima espressione del rock progressivo con influenze neoclassiche.

    Magnifico.

  • wooooooooooooooow

this is the most amazing acoustic i´ve ever listened.............

it was 1977, then join this acoustic with Cristina and the powerful drug ever experienced ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

    FIVE all your gtr Steve

  • "WOW" that was the only word that came into my head as well!

  • Excellent posting.

I was shocked at the beauty of this tune when it was released many years ago.
