"Ramses" dislike for Scarab reminds me of this book called 'Dragon's Keep'. Both have the main character(Prince Ramses/the princess Rosalind) who doesn't like the royal confident(Scarab/the castle astronamer Sir Magnus), who has gained the trust of a royal parent (Pharoah/Queen Gweneth). Ofcourse the main difference is that while Ramses sealed away Scarab, Sir Magnus was able to do away with the queen by having her drink an overdosage of honeyed poppy.
