To all of you percussionist expert. The video is not aimed toward the Senior level (high school) percussionist, but yet toward the beginner. The technique that he is using is not incorrect. I believe that my experience in playing and teaching allows me to say that. I have been playing for 20+ yrs, teaching 14yrs. Although I don't agree with everything, the concept that he is using is correct and you will be amazed how so many Senior level drummers plays this incorrect.
EW! i like how he says and even SHOWS the heights he will use in the video and then fails miserably (sorry if i spelled the wrong) with his right hand for those so called "3 inch heights" at 2:55 -___- and jeeze....SO MUCH ARM!!
@rush12211 he was over showing so he would his point acrossed have you ever taken lesson?? most likely not if you dont understand what he trying to point out
@Germany981 overshowing. you can 'overshow' with just your wrist. theres no use in trying to 'show' his 'students' something that involves incorrect technique. (most likely not if you dont understand what he trying to point out) pointing out accents can be done without using your elbow. (have you ever taken lesson??) for my own sanity, im not even going to indulge you with answering that question. PLEASE if you're trying to learn off of this video, i would suggest taking lessons yourself
@rush12211 i disnt waste my time reading this you clearly have no idea to lisen and make sence out of it we all know he doesnt play that way he over did it to make a point of view some people learn better if its more clear witch he made it very clear your an idiot if you think thats the real way he plays -_-
@brandon1894 That's the marching snare technique on his left hand, and no, his accents are okay, you might want to do research before you comments on things like this. Also you don't want to grasp the sticks like you are choking somebody, you have to stay as much as relaxed as possible. If you tighten your fulcrum too tight, then you can't do multiples balanced rolls.
people are saying he has no life ya'll are the ones leaving comments while he's getting paid, people are so fucking stupid these days especially with some of this horrible spelling crap you always see, holy shit just turn the video off and stop fucking complaining about it, its expert village what the hell were you expecting.
people are saying he has no life ya'll are the ones leaving comments while he's getting paid, people are so fucking stupid these days especially with some of this horrible spelling crap you always see, holy shit just turn the video off and stop fucking complaining about it you can find a lot worse.
ok just to point this out, does the room he's in look anything like a gym? no, my point exactly. Shut up if you're just gonna be a loser about peoples videos. If you don't like it then don't watch it and move on geez
I wish I had your posture, to be frank. I hear the expert village is overrun with bubonic plague carrying street rats. What say u to that, Jonathen? (to b frank, as always)
boring video, if this guy was my tech i would fall asleep at practice. good player, i dont think his taps are too high, just man taps. rather have that than too low, weak=lame even if it doesnt cause dirt, which it is likely to do as well. always err on the side of manliness. :-)
thats not poor quality sound its just how, the snare sounds you can get diffrent types you know, and what you expect from a free video snare lesson on youtube god
holy crap shut up! seriously!!you're arguing about quality of sound!!!everyone's perception on what a good quality of sound is different! some people like that dead sound, and some like a really fat one so please, before arguing about opinions, think!
"lol u suk, why arnt u postin fucking banal comments on youtube like me insted of doin drum vidz you faggot lololol!!!"
Note: If you talk even remotely like the above quotation, you are likely a talentless mouth-breathing basement dweller who smells like fucking shit. Take a shower.
Ok y is there an inacurate video for beginners, i feel sorry for anyone that believed this to be correct.
for one thing this guy is showing bad tech throughout the excercise. he's using 98% arm and 2% wrist, which in the marching world does not work. two he looks like he has a twelve foot rod up his ass, meaning not relaxed.
plz guys, get some books and dont pay attention to scrubs on youtube.
Im pretty sure this guy has marched corps before. And if you watch any core you will see that legato strokes DO use a lot of arm to get as much sound as possible out of the drum. So put down your books and start paying attention to the video. You cant learn how to get good sound quality out of any book. Sorry dude.
um unless your using molar stroke this is ok, although its a lil slow to be using it, in which case this explains y he's arm.
however in a basic mach grip, his right tech, the stacato stroke is initiated from the simple wrist motion and then closing the fingers and keeping them closed.
if u can find a corp that uses molar stroke at 120 to do simple bucks in sets of two then go for it man, have fun.
arm doesnt mean getting the most sound, it means ur flayling and probably overplaying.
lol but your wrong man. bucks isnt suppose to be all wrist and then squeeze to make the stick stop. That produces horrible sound quality. It creates a dead sound. Leave your back fingers a lil loose and make your wrist stop the stick from coming back up. And molar is more of a whip to create speed. This is not the same thing. This is simply getting good sound out of accent taps. Again this guy has marched core so why do you think you can critique him?
Agreed. I am going off instruction from Mike Thomas. He has marched glassmen, cavies, rhythm x and some more. The guy above plays nothing like people on the west coast. Esp. BD.
what area? cause im from va, and he moved somewhere out west like four years ago. and havent seen or heard from him since... aside from the random magazine he modeled for...
if u have marched before u would know that if u use a legato stoke the stick rebounds to it original position. how the fuck are u going to play a 3 or 6 inch tap when ur stick rebounds all the way back to its starting position. u cant! that is why u have to use the down stroke to stop the stick down by the drum head to play a low tap.
Not good for beginners because it omits several intial steps and totally negates any of the wrist techniques - he discusses flat wrist at one point but his sample demonstrates more arm than wrist
ha. Interesting you say that. I've seen this guy before. His drumline is clean as hell and one of the top lines in the state. shows how much you know.
If you actually need to look at a video to learn snare, you are probably never going to be excellent.I watch them for the humor

i just realized we are arguing over two different styles of teaching and playing.
ur talking more Blue devils instructional staff bucks and im talking cavies bucks.
and closing the back fingers doesnt create bad tone, OVERTIGHTENING them does.
all u do by closing them is stoping the stick and so long as ur playing through the head u wont overplay.
