@seks03 I've already said this, but I'll say it again: This is not a just hobby for the Dervaes family, it the way they make a living. It's their life and it takes money to live. It's amazing how quick people are to scrutinize this family and forget all the amazing things they are doing, just because they want to protect their hard earned work.
All companies including non-profit organizations use trademarks to protect themselves, why should the Dervaes be excluded? They are still amazing.
@Beelzebean The Dervaes Family has every right to make a living. Trademark "Path to Freedom," or "Dervaes Institute," or even "Dervaes Family Farm." However, in what world do they live where they actually believe they invented the phrase "Urban Homesteading" and believe they can trademark it and restrict its use by other people and groups who have been using far longer than they have? What arrogance and yes, they are amazing. Amazingly arrogant and short-sighted.

Everyone should know that the Dervaes family are complete phonies & greedy hypocrites. They are in fact a CORPORATION that has copyrighted the term "Urban Homestead" (a phrase that has been in public use for 30 years) and is now cracking down on small-time farmers, educators and bloggers who have been using the term for years, shutting down websites and facebook pages in order to protect "their" intellectual property. They are reviled amongst the community they claim to represent.
Have you heard of the zeitgeist movement? These dudes are basically out there trying to spread the word of how the monetary system does every one in, by making every one think scarcity, greed, and competition are essential to life.
New jersey you can't have farm animals if you live in the city or suburbs. We would have complaints galore. We're only allowed 3 pets per household. Chicken and goats out of the question. Love the graden idea. I just do the basics now. The vegetables look wonderful..
Have you checked/read the ordinace for your area?

Red Bank, NJ. No poultry or fowl for any purpose may be kept inside of or within 40 feet of any house, dwelling or store. No more than 12 of any fowl or poultry can be kept without a permit. Any fowl or poultry must be kept and maintained in a pen, coop, yard or enclosure.
That's very good for 1/10th an acre. Shows that growing at least some of your own food is possible even on a typical residential lot. However most people are just too lazy to work in a garden. They don't realize that a little work in the garden can save you a lot of money on groceries which means either less work at a typical job or more money in your pocket.
This is the way to go, Everyone! When the grocery stores close, we will need to know how to grow our own food. And sooner than you think, since the gov'ts seem intent upon killing us with genetically modified "frankenfoods." and poisons like MSG and aspartame!
@LayDeeA3 Don't forget the introduction of nano particles into the food system! Some of them have been PROVEN to alter DNA in mice. They are putting that in the food supply!
would do the same if i owned land but banks and rich landowners who may have inherited it make it difficult for us poor people to get ahead. my parents dont even own land. self sufficient is the way to go. i have developed some great hydroponic setups but on a much smaller scale.
Awesome! Thank you for reinspiring me to work harder on my 1/4 acre land. Chickens in March and this is the second full year I've grown successful foods. I am aimming now to grow more of my favorite vegetables, fruits and medicinal herbs as well as using drought tolerant native edibles. Maybe in another year I could add Dwarf goats. Just do it folks!
This a wonderful video - I especially treasure the steward and good works statements near the end. As I plan our 2009 garden (expanding from our raised beds out to bag gardens, etc) I feel very re-empowered as I reconnect with what you all have been up to in recent times.
Bet the neighbors love the farm animals hmm?

unless you are tied to a job that you can't or won't leave. Better idea would be to move to a lower tax state. And get more for less.

You could do as pdsavage said, or you can also turn to guinea pigs for meat, if necessary.(I heard they reproduce quickly.)

1 out of 5 households do this we probably don't need a local grocery produce
i would think there would be so much food grown that we would just be giving it away.
just a though one small yard can hold 2-3 avocado trees.
right now avocados are a BUCK yes a DOLLAR each the the grocery. if we ALL planted avocados
we would drown in guacamole
