  • everyone's gotta start somewhere... Iced Earth started by practicing in a dinky little storage locker, in a town with no club scene for them, with a sub-par vocalist that had little personality. however, give them the right vocalist (i.e. matt barlow, ripper owens or stu block) and they will make any song KICK ASS

  • I hate Gene Adam's vocals at first, but no that i've gotten used to them i think they're kinda awesome.. anyway unique.. same goes for Sean Killian (Vio-Lence)

  • Everyone who's wondering what documentary this is from. Type in Thrash Til Death and it should be the 8th video down

  • @IronMaidenDude101

cheers dude i uploaded it and is now available to watch in one part on my channel .cheers for watching

  • This ICED EARTH sound better than new ones. First three albums my kickass.

    \m/ INTO ASSAULT METAL\m/

  • Jon Schaffer has a new project called Sons of Liberty. Anyone who is an Iced Earth fan should check it out, it's awesome!!

  • @IcedEarth426 Fuckin aye man!! SOL is aweseme as shit. I saw them both in LA sept. 25

  • Jon Schaffer is the best everrrrrr

  • thats fucking awesome! my band practices at a place just like that, and theres other bands who practice their too haha buzzy

  • Jon looks weird without his beard.

  • I think it's the other way around actually. But you might be of the new era ;)

  • I don't know, I just think that his beard is cool.

I've been listening to all of the Iced Earth album in chronological order (except for Framing Armageddon, which was too awesome to wait). But yeah, I'm used to see the "new era" Jon.

  • Great man, I (used to) listen mostly to their 1988-2001 work. Musicians get older too, haha.

  • @kashgag I gotta agree with Wyndrax. Jon looks weird with his cowboy beard mustache combo

  • @kashgag

please accept my video response for your clip .. yes it's the full shabang cheers

  • barlows better man and alot better songs were writen with him too!!!

  • I like Greely and Adams vocals more than Barlows... i dont like when he change the chorus and verses with his style. IMO Gene match x100 more for this album than Barlow.

  • Iced Earth is one of those bands where they really wrote the songs for the singers. No matter who sings the song, they almost always play it exactly the same way, but I prefer the original singer's renditions of every one of their songs.

I love Greely on all the Stormrider tracks, Barlow on the bulk of their work, and Owens for Ten Thousand Strong.

  • What are you, stupid? Gene can't sing for shit. His high notes are ridiculous. I laugh my ass off while listening to him.

Barlow is a beast compared to him.

  • Κομματάρα ! Ο καλύτερος δίσκος μαζί με το Night of the Stormrider !

  • HOLY SHIT! Check out Randall Shawver's killer Demolition Hammer "Necrology" demo shirt that he has on. I had no idea he was a Hammer fan! \m/

  • Excellent video and documentary. Even though I'm from Tampa, FL, too bad I was just a little baby at the time of their self titled debut's release. My brother on the other hand, got to see them at The Ritz (the place where Obituary filmed their music video for "The End Complete") in Ybor City Tampa, FL back in 1989. That was when they released their self financed demo "Enter the Realm". Then again in 1992 during their tour for "Night of the Stormrider". But in this place you DIE!!!

  • This is some sweet rare footage, thanks for puting this up!

  • haha gene is fuckin insane!

  • No way!! you want to tell me the song I listen to everyday on my selphone was actually written in that little garage by a band still dreaming?

    wow gives me hope

  • oh dear lord...Adams on Vocals...what an awesome singer..i really liked the 1st I.E. Album....

  • I 100% agree. Gene Adam (he's not that bad folks...come on!) and John Greely where some of I.E.'s best vocalists. I guess due to the creepy "evil" tones that they had in their vocal styles.

  • How did you get this?! Great job!

  • Holy Shit this is awesome!! Thanks alot for this!!

  • I don't think I've ever seen Jon Schaffer without his beard..

  • Does anyone know if thier is any more of these early interviews/documentarys avaliable?

  • Maaan... to have been able to experience those days would've been awesome. I'd love to be 20 years old 20 years ago. Hehehe.

  • Schaffer needs to be forcibly and repeatedly raped with this video until he agrees to make Iced Earth awesome again

FEAR THE ANGELS HOLOCAUST, THEY'RE SCREAAAAAAAAAAAAMIIIIIIIIIING

  • framing Armageddon and crucible of man are definitely disappointments =(. i thought crucible would be good cause barlow came back but i was unfortunately i was wrong.

and angels haulocaust is the fuckin song i wake up to on my cd alarm clock every morning man FUCK YEA!

  • Really, Iced Earth is and always good, but it just changes. Heck, check out Blind Guardian they too change. That's what good musicians do.

  • Very Vio-Lence/Flotsam feel.

  • Especially the singer, sounds a bit like Sean Killian

  • this documentation was featured on headbangers' ball back in the days. great to see that again. It really sucked that they didn't put in the song's name - gave me a hard time finding it...

  • this version is better than the new one

  • Kick ass rare footage!

  • damn look at schaffer headbang

  • awesome song!!!those where the days

  • Greely = Awesome

  • this was one of my favored eras of iced earth

  • You know, Gene Adam does grow on you... He's really pretty repulsive the first time you hear him, especially if you're already familiar with Barlow's renditions from Days of Purgatory. Over the years though, I've been able get into his singing more and more.

  • Old Iced Earth were amazing, even before Barlow arrived. ''Night of the Stormrider'' is by far their best album and probably one of the best metal albums of the 90s.

Fuck all this shitty Trivium, Killswith Engage & Machine Head bullshit of today.

In terms of great American metal it's all about Iced Earth & Nevermore!

  • I agree, Iced Earth and Nevermore are two of my fave bands, but you gotta admit, the new Machine Head album is pretty decent. But i dont think Trivium is all that great, and Killswitch Engage fucking blow.

  • I'm sorry I don't have to admit anything, New Machine Head is just same old half-thrash/half-groove unoriginality. Granted it's not terrible but it's not special either, no special riffs/solos. Not like Iced Earth, Nevermore or Symphony X.

  • @Dungarth Amen.

  • God....this band makes me SO badly want an old Marshall stack.

  • I guess Adams isn't too bad, except when he gets to the really high notes. He's actually got quite a classic metal vocal style going.

  • yeah, it's alot like Maiden's first front man(his name escapes me right now)

  • This is one of my favorite Iced Earth songs. Great song.

  • thewickedone666 is right he still being a cop...

  • actually being a singer isn't a full time job. Matt is still a cop, but is the singer of pyramaze.

  • barlow is now with pyramaze

  • Barlow kicks all metal singers' ass.

  • awesome!!!.

  • man i know this storage place. we used to have a storage unit there. DAMN IT BARLOW WERE ARE YOU???

  • yeah man, i heard he is a cop now. WTF? please someone tell me i am WRONG

  • I wish i could. God damnit i do. Seriously, i am so pissed that he's gone now.

  • Barlow did not make or break this band.

This original line up was pretty fuckin killer for a bunch of young kids!

    Look...

    Barlow's never coming back...

    Get over it!

    Ripper is a fantastic replacement!

  • somehow funny to read this 2 year old comment

    "Barlow's never coming back.."

the rebirth of the wicked ;-)

  • haha hell y dude

  • nah man you aint :(, he is a police officer in delaware...

  • you are wrong. he WAS a cop now he sings for a band called pyramaze.

  • actually being a singer isn't a full time job he's still a cop but also is the singer of pyramaze

  • if ur talkin about matt, he's back in iced

    earth

  • I still love this band, but Barlow was the greatest part of it. God damnit!!!! I can't believe he left!!!!

  • It's just too bad Barlow left =/ Iced Earth, isnt Iced Earth anymore, I mean who puts The Ripper instead of Barlow at the mic -.- and the guitars sound totally different... I LOVEEEE the old Iced Earth though.

  • barlow is the best

  • The Sunset club was actually shut down because of Deicide. Back in their Amon days in the late 80's they used to play at that club and they pretty much destroyed that place.

  • Barlow was the best. Hands down. Tim Owens isn't a bad singer, but he's got fucking NOTHING on Barlow. Not a damn thing.

  • ahh iced earth is really in a sad state these days. They used to be one of my favorite bands...but putting ripper in for barlow? thats just nonsense. barlow was perfect for that band, just listen to burnt offerings...the true pinacle of iced earth. Now its just some joker who cant hold a candle to barlow singing in front of so many half assed re-used riffs

  • gene adam is the shit

  • Thats the same place where Morbid Angel use to practice during the Altars days. My band use to practice there too.

  • Nocturnus too!

i have some rehearsal videos of Nocturnus and Morbid Angel playing in that area. What other bands were in the area? And is that really a public storage?

  • Barlow is Iced Earth's heart and schaffer is the brain and this band cannot function without barlow for he gave emotion and pain to schaffer dark and twizted lyrics and that was a GREAT COMBANINATION so any other singers that come after barlow are just fucking stand ins because i will wait till judgment day just to see schaffer and barlow together again were they should be!!!!

  • Matt Barlow was....is...and still The Holy ONe...\m/\m/

  • good voice...but barlow is the one!

  • I don't really likr Matt, but I prefere Greely.

And Gene Adams was total bad ass.

  • I prefer Matt's voice on Something Wicked. I think Greeley's voice would have been perfect for Dark Saga and Burnt Offerings! His voice really is amazing though, especially in Travel in Stygian. Barlow made it sound too tired.

  • Greeley was fascist though and I didn't like his higher notes but Travel in Stygian with him was good, I have to admit.

  • this is a fuckin classic... cool

  • fuck! no wonder jon fucked up his neck. get over it, matts gone and hes not coming back, he just got his bachelors in criminal justice, why would he want to go back. besides this is the beginning of a new era of iced earth. i cant wait for the albums to come out.

o and i heard something about alive in athens II and about a live demons and wizards album

  • i think most people are over it and know he isnt coming back, but we cant forget the guy that gave iced earth's its unique sound. most metal bands have the high pitched singing... maiden, priest, old IE and Tim Owens. Barlow was one of the few baritones in metal.

  • Fuck Yes Iced Earth is Fucken Killer!!!!!!!

  • This album and Night of the stormrider are their best.

All hail when the night falls

  • Yes Owens is very good. Iced Earth has gone though countless line up changes over the 20 years they have been around.

And holy cow, this is really old school. He looks so young! Not that I'm saying he's old... but he's... not young... yeah...

  • lol!!

  • I dunno what the problem is

    I like owens' voice

anyway it's not the voice that makes iced earth to such a good band

  • i've got the video this is one -metal xs thrash n' burn. It's awesome!

  • oh shit, they changed soo much....i just started getting into them...but holy crap they used to be sooooo much better than they are now, in my opinion

  • This is very true.

Since Barlow is gone, the band has lost it.

  • i wouldn't say the band has lost it. Jon did something a bit different and I respect him for that. However, the 2 storyline albums he's working will sound extreamly weird with out Barlow. I fucking LOVE Tim and he did fucking awesome on the GB album... but Matt should should be singing on the storyline albums, or at least ask him to sing some lead as a guest. Kinda like with the Phantom Opera Ghost. That would be cool!

  • I liked TGB with Tim but ya, Matt was the best.

  • iced earth is one of the greatest bands ever!!... but matt barlow was their best singer

  • This is wonderful. Thanks for uploading this video. Iced Earth Rules!!

  • I downloaded it from a metal-hub with DC++. Unfortunatly, I haven't got it on tape.

  • This kicks ass!!

I wonder how you got your hands on this rare footage??

  • awesome. gene owns
