everyone's gotta start somewhere... Iced Earth started by practicing in a dinky little storage locker, in a town with no club scene for them, with a sub-par vocalist that had little personality. however, give them the right vocalist (i.e. matt barlow, ripper owens or stu block) and they will make any song KICK ASS
I hate Gene Adam's vocals at first, but no that i've gotten used to them i think they're kinda awesome.. anyway unique.. same goes for Sean Killian (Vio-Lence)
the name of the doc is called Florida - Thrash 'til Death i have uploaded the whole clip (originally in 3 parts) now as one complete clip on my channel
I don't know, I just think that his beard is cool.
I've been listening to all of the Iced Earth album in chronological order (except for Framing Armageddon, which was too awesome to wait). But yeah, I'm used to see the "new era" Jon.
I like Greely and Adams vocals more than Barlows... i dont like when he change the chorus and verses with his style. IMO Gene match x100 more for this album than Barlow.
Iced Earth is one of those bands where they really wrote the songs for the singers. No matter who sings the song, they almost always play it exactly the same way, but I prefer the original singer's renditions of every one of their songs.
I love Greely on all the Stormrider tracks, Barlow on the bulk of their work, and Owens for Ten Thousand Strong.
Excellent video and documentary. Even though I'm from Tampa, FL, too bad I was just a little baby at the time of their self titled debut's release. My brother on the other hand, got to see them at The Ritz (the place where Obituary filmed their music video for "The End Complete") in Ybor City Tampa, FL back in 1989. That was when they released their self financed demo "Enter the Realm". Then again in 1992 during their tour for "Night of the Stormrider". But in this place you DIE!!!
I 100% agree. Gene Adam (he's not that bad folks...come on!) and John Greely where some of I.E.'s best vocalists. I guess due to the creepy "evil" tones that they had in their vocal styles.
framing Armageddon and crucible of man are definitely disappointments =(. i thought crucible would be good cause barlow came back but i was unfortunately i was wrong.
and angels haulocaust is the fuckin song i wake up to on my cd alarm clock every morning man FUCK YEA!
this documentation was featured on headbangers' ball back in the days. great to see that again. It really sucked that they didn't put in the song's name - gave me a hard time finding it...
You know, Gene Adam does grow on you... He's really pretty repulsive the first time you hear him, especially if you're already familiar with Barlow's renditions from Days of Purgatory. Over the years though, I've been able get into his singing more and more.
Old Iced Earth were amazing, even before Barlow arrived. ''Night of the Stormrider'' is by far their best album and probably one of the best metal albums of the 90s.
Fuck all this shitty Trivium, Killswith Engage & Machine Head bullshit of today.
In terms of great American metal it's all about Iced Earth & Nevermore!
I agree, Iced Earth and Nevermore are two of my fave bands, but you gotta admit, the new Machine Head album is pretty decent. But i dont think Trivium is all that great, and Killswitch Engage fucking blow.
I'm sorry I don't have to admit anything, New Machine Head is just same old half-thrash/half-groove unoriginality. Granted it's not terrible but it's not special either, no special riffs/solos. Not like Iced Earth, Nevermore or Symphony X.
It's just too bad Barlow left =/ Iced Earth, isnt Iced Earth anymore, I mean who puts The Ripper instead of Barlow at the mic -.- and the guitars sound totally different... I LOVEEEE the old Iced Earth though.
The Sunset club was actually shut down because of Deicide. Back in their Amon days in the late 80's they used to play at that club and they pretty much destroyed that place.
ahh iced earth is really in a sad state these days. They used to be one of my favorite bands...but putting ripper in for barlow? thats just nonsense. barlow was perfect for that band, just listen to burnt offerings...the true pinacle of iced earth. Now its just some joker who cant hold a candle to barlow singing in front of so many half assed re-used riffs
i have some rehearsal videos of Nocturnus and Morbid Angel playing in that area. What other bands were in the area? And is that really a public storage?
Barlow is Iced Earth's heart and schaffer is the brain and this band cannot function without barlow for he gave emotion and pain to schaffer dark and twizted lyrics and that was a GREAT COMBANINATION so any other singers that come after barlow are just fucking stand ins because i will wait till judgment day just to see schaffer and barlow together again were they should be!!!!
I prefer Matt's voice on Something Wicked. I think Greeley's voice would have been perfect for Dark Saga and Burnt Offerings! His voice really is amazing though, especially in Travel in Stygian. Barlow made it sound too tired.
fuck! no wonder jon fucked up his neck. get over it, matts gone and hes not coming back, he just got his bachelors in criminal justice, why would he want to go back. besides this is the beginning of a new era of iced earth. i cant wait for the albums to come out.
o and i heard something about alive in athens II and about a live demons and wizards album
i think most people are over it and know he isnt coming back, but we cant forget the guy that gave iced earth's its unique sound. most metal bands have the high pitched singing... maiden, priest, old IE and Tim Owens. Barlow was one of the few baritones in metal.
oh shit, they changed soo much....i just started getting into them...but holy crap they used to be sooooo much better than they are now, in my opinion
i wouldn't say the band has lost it. Jon did something a bit different and I respect him for that. However, the 2 storyline albums he's working will sound extreamly weird with out Barlow.
