He gives the most absurd melodramatic speech against dog fighting but was a member of the KKK. He endorses the lynching and persecution of an entire group of people based on their skin color.
What Micheal Vick did was Barbaric and Byrd was right to call his ass out on it. If that makes him a racist then count me in. Micheal Vicks smirking dog torturing hind end should still be sitting in jail. This man has done more in one day with his little finger for poor blacks and whites than all you GOP ass kissing chumps.
this guy is an absolute scumbag. gives the most absurd melodramatic speech against dog fighting but was a member of the KKK and as such endorses the lynching and persecution of an entire group of people based on their skin color. yeah what a great hero.
"There are white n*ggers. I've seen a lot of white n*ggers in my time." -- Former Klansman and Current US Senator Robert Byrd, a man who is referred to by many Democrats as the "conscience of the Senate" in March of 2001
Byrd is an American hero; the general consensus in the black community is that Byrd did more in his last 30 years to advance civil rights than he did in his first 20 to block civil rights. Again, Byrd, unlike Trent Lott and Strom Thurmond, renounced his earlier, racist ideas. Call him what you want; he will always be regarded as one of the true Senatorial giants.
If true that Byrd renounced his past association with hate groups and against the 1964 act, then I'm ok with him. I heard many of his interview and he comes out as a true conservative in a sense that he seeks justice and fairness. In America, we all should get a second chance.
@jpdevlab Yeah, and Obama was really a centrist like he portrayed himself to be during the campaign. When you grow up, you might realize that politicians lie to gain political favor from the *ahem* ignorant masses.
This guy has been a senator since 1959! Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan when he was 24 in 1942. His local chapter unanimously elected him Exalted Cyclops. Byrd joined with other Southern and border state Democrats to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964, personally filibustering the bill for 14 hours. He also opposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
But Byrd eventually renounced his time with the Klan; some of his more racist colleges from the GOP, such as Trent Lott, Richard Burr (my states pathetic excuse for a senator) and the late Strom Thurmond never tried to distance themselves from their association and sympathy for the KKK. Byrd called his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act the "greatest mistake of his career." Since then, Byrd has become an advocate for families and students, and hero to West Virginians and all Americans.
It does not matter that he renounced his time with the Klan. The klan is a hate group whose avowed purpose was to protect the rights of and further the interests of white Americans by violence and intimidation. They developed iconic white costumes consisting of robes, masks, and conical hats. The KKK has a record of using terrorism, violence, and lynching to murder and oppress African Americans, Jews and other minorities and to intimidate and oppose Roman Catholics and labor unions.
@bkbenjy So when somebody is involved in a hate group at some point in there life, if they ever leave it and say they regret being in it, it doesn't matter. People should always be defined by the mistakes that they've made, not by what they've done to correct them, amirite?
He's talking about Michael Vick, for those who may not know.
DOG FIGHTERS ARE COWARDLY SCUM!
The war against dogfighting is taking place in our local communities and is being fought every day by animal protection groups, community leaders, and law enforcement officials. I think Senator Byrd should be thanked for encouraging people to condemn this cruel and illegal activity and for his work to end dogfighting everywhere.
