  • in band at BJHS we are playing this. if anyone else from that elective happens to see this video, i'm the one that plays the silver colored tenor bass trombone ;P

  • A wonderful classical piece of music. Truly the best that was ever composed. More music like this needs to be made. I do love this song.

  • The Ultimate Classical song.

  • how did it happened that there's no movie with this amazing music?

  • 3:03 is the best part

  • omg senior band at HCI has to play this... our music teacher must have a lot of confidence in us to be getting us to play this song :S wish us luck guys!!!! we got this song last week and have to play it in a month for a concert....

  • my favorite is the beginning of 3:04 because i use to play that part in highschool, it always made me so emotional

  • My personal favorite version of the Planets is the one conducted by James Levine.

  • 18 people have no lives (look at the dislike vs. like bar)

  • ...It sounds more like it should be Neptune's theme xD It doesn't change the fact that it's still a beautiful song, though! I'm playing this for my school orchestra~ So much fun!

  • song starts a 3:06

  • Genius !

  • Check out Adrian Boult's version--beautiful recording. He was good friends with Holst, and they communicated about the performance.

  • played this in school my fave part is wen it hits 3:04 GAWD I MISS PLAYING THIS!!!!

  • I consider this recording and the one with Levine and the Chicago Symphony to be the best available. Just fantastic performances.

  • it has the most beautiful peice in the history of music

  • holly crap this is good music

  • how this does not have 1 million hits, i do not know

  • THE BEST recording of the planets in existence (sorry Berstein :p )

I've heard many other recordings, but this one is the jewel. Funny thing is, the first time I had ever heard of the piece was through finding this very recording at my library.

  • THE BEST recording of the planets in existence (sorry Berstein :p )

  • @ballnuts352 what makes you think i said that?!

  • i love the part at 3:00

  • @thezombiefromhell This song is so easy for trumpets. Im a trumpet and with a concert coming up in a few days Im starting to worry about Knights of Destiny, Cumberland Cross, and Dorchester, but Jupiter is so easy on trumpet barely any change in note.

  • pirates of the carrabien reminded me of this

  • I went to a symphony called "Symphony in Space" and nearly died when they included this.

  • Hammerheart, is the best song based on this composition

  • the suspended symbal part for 3:00 to 5:00 is so boring, so my band teacher put in a bunch of parts

  • We're Playing THis In Band! It.... Is Epic. It Reminds Me Of Pirates Of The Carrabean So Much Fun To Play On Clarinet! :D

  • FOR ASTONISHING FACTS, JUST TYPE IN THE BOX:

    SCIENTIFIK FACTS IN QURAN

  • wooow!!!

    i love!!

  • we are playing this in the band of my my highschool

  • Probably one of the greatest pieces of music ever written... The simplicity yet the incredible power behind every phrase... Undeniable genious and unquestionable beauty.

  • My band is going to play this for a concert soon. I haven't tried the piece yet, but it looks really easy for euphonium.

  • I used to play this on oboe in grade 7 or 8 it was one of my favorites we did 3:04 - 5:02

  • @meow0meow7 I played this during my junior year at high school on the oboe as well.

  • we are playing this in our band; sounds like shrek!

  • love it starttingg from 3:04 :)

  • Best recording I have heard of Jupiter. Thank you for uploading!

  • how can any dislike this????

    its awesome

  • learing to play on tenor sax a tad weird but im transposing myself :D

  • I love how this song reminds me of a Zelda theme @ 1:01

I remember playing this in High School on clarinet.

  • Is it strange that I want the music for this for Christmas? When I say music, I mean like the score; I already have the CD.

  • @KittyGonzalez123 No, not at all; after I bought the CD, I decided I couldn't afford not to have the score. The one I went for is 'The Planets: In Full Score' - would definitely make a great present :)

  • how dare 18 people dislike this video LOL!

  • we're playing this in our youth symphony i got to practice on my violin part a lot

  • YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One word...Brilliant.

  • An amazing piece of music.

  • WOWOWOWW

  • This is quite a good recording from one of my favaourite conductors, however if you want to hear a truly spectacular recording check out SirCharles Groves with the Royal Philharmonic. It is , surprisingly, the best ever recording and I have studied almost all of them over a 40yr period

  • One of my favourite Trumpet pieces Ive played.

  • Yeah, Dutoit's version here IS THE BEST EVER!

  • Quorthon(RIP) from Bathory has used this melody to record the lyrics from hammerheart.

    (3:03)

  • we are doing this for marching band :)

  • we played this in band i play trombone

  • I switch between "tenor tuba in b flat" (baritone) and string bass all throughout this song in my full orchestra class

  • timetoslowdownisnow:

Please could you post your arrangement for percussion when it is done - I would be REALLY interested to hear it!

    Thanks,

    Penelope

  • We are doing an arrangement of this piece for percussion ensemble

  • amazing!

  • playing this for UIL this year!

    love the french horn part

  • this piece is insanely difficult

  • beautiful music, thank you

  • we're playing it in orchestra

    i play the cello

the piece is great fun :)

  • Aww.... the amazing horn licks from 1:50 ish are not prominent, or impressive. Neither is the "Homeland" section... the LSO with Sir Colin Davis is in my opinion far better than this.

That said, this is a very "clean" rendition... albeit a bit boring at times.

  • From 3:04 to 5:01 we play that flowing chorale part in my high school marching band as a warm-up, and I love it! Such a great piece!

  • I can't believe none of you posted that this music was used in the soundtrack of "The Right Stuff." (my fav movie) It goes along when John Glenn was launching into orbit for the first time for the US. The music goes along great with the scene. Check it out if you haven't seen it. I LOVE this piece. Never knew who composed it until tonight. Heard it in the Movie theater 26 years ago. Never forgotten it.

  • we're playing this in symphony it's actually fairly simple for the bass line I love it!

  • Round 3:10 is the best part of the song, its so beautiful.

  • This is still one of the best songs EVER! I enjoy listening to it so much. I may get my band directer to play this for the Winter concert, I really hope we can. It is so beautiful I almost cry when I hear 3:04 to 5:00.

  • fuck me they should duptep remix this

  • 3:04 to 5:00 almost makes me cry. It is so powerful!

  • it makes my cry

  • I love that part! When we play it I always sway my arm and head all dramatically its so fun!

  • 1:38 to 2:32 is my favorite part. I've never forgotten this song in over 15 yrs (which is about the last time I heard it). One of the best pieces of music I've ever heard!

  • this song makes me wish I was a french horn player instead of trumpet...

  • Im playing this in my band.

    Its hard on the oboe.

    X.X

  • my frined lpays oboe and she said its so hard

i play flute and its SO HARD

were playing this in band this year too. omgggg

our sightreading was total failure esp at the beg.!

    confusing!

  • omg! i play the oboe, and we're playing this in our band too!

  • Omg seoriusly?!

HAHA oboe is hard but i wanna learn it cuz its SO UNIQUE!

wat grade are u in ?

    this orchestra version?

  • we're only playing the slower part. It's beautiful, but we just got it two classes ago!

it's easy in the beats apart from being really really slow, but the tone quality has to be perfect, or the whole piece is screwed up! That's why it's hard.

Plus, I'm the only oboe in my entire school, so I'm kinda on my own there....

  • Wow! i play oboe and we are playing the planets at my school too!

  • same

  • Comment removed

  • @iOboeist I'm playing the planets in this years marching show!

  • @iOboeist i am playing this too on oboe!

  • at a contest my band went to last year jupiter was the entire show

  • Yeah. So is MSHS's marching band. The same part of the song too. 3:04-5:00. Our theme is "In Concert" so yeah. Looking forward to seeing the dril to it.

  • 3:04 to 5:00 is what my marching band is using for our ballad.

  • is there a song with this melody but with lyrics?

  • Yep, Holst's inner theme was taken and lyrics were added; it's called I Vow To Thee My Country, and was sang at and written for (I think) Diana's funeral.

  • thanks

  • @swingballbros It's originally an ancient church hymn. Sooo gorgeous.

  • @swingballbros It's also used as the music for 'World in Union' which, I believe, is the anthem for the Rugby Football Union.

  • @swingballbros That song "I Vow to Thee My Country" (at least the one in our old hymnal) has lyrics credited to Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, and dated 1918, the music using this lovely masterpiece. Long before Diana, but certainly beautiful!

  • @amy646263 The world in union. rugby unin anthem for the world cup. Amazing

  • Comment removed

  • @amy646263 . . ..it was the favorite hymn of the Princess, but was not written for her funeral . . .

  • its such a beautiful piece of music xo

  • OMG, the intro jingle of Sibelius 5 just blended perfectly into the music!

  • A great song, but someone said it was better than Dvorak, and I can't see it yet. That could be because one had the visual of seeing Crocodile fly threw the air.

  • 3:04-5:00 has gotta be up there with the greatest musical accomplishments in human history

  • @theilldigi I played that for one of my school concerts a few years back.

  • @theilldigi I absolutely LOVE that section, it's beautiful

  • @theilldigi

My thought exactly! I would be so bold to say no film composer has ever made any theme that comes near to it.

  • Brilliant.

  • This one is my fav although Neptune is my favorite planet but at 3:04 its pretty!!!

  • Of course the 2nd common one of the planets is Jupiter while the 1st common one is Mars

  • There is a version of this piece in the Mononoke Hime OST, the Miyazaki animated film

  • 3.04 i luv it ! one of my fav peices : ] i played it for one of my grades : p

  • lmao ! - i spelt pieces wrong [ :

  • im playing this for our spring concert

  • Oh. never mind. It does that later in the song xD whoops.

  • Around 1:02, if you slow it down a lot, and play the areas that are two notes repeated as one note, it sounds really, really pretty. i did that on violin.

  • i can play this on trumpet but its not this version its some shorter easier version my band director gave us

  • I love this song. Im playing the bells/glock for our principal's inauguration

  • OMG luv it!!! im playing this for a concert!

  • I am playing this song in the Atlanta Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble and i love it!

  • luv it,.

  • i love this tune, it's so beautiful from 3:05

  • I'm playing this with my concert band at Grade East Festivals, go flute section!!!!

  • I can honestly say that this is by far my favourite piece of Holst's Planets .

  • Agh creepy picture on 2:49-2:54

  • Haha, sorry about that - only decent picture I could find of Charles Dutoit

  • the same. wat school u go 2?

  • i want this sheet music. we are only playing part of this song. Bleh. The chorale part. 3:05 to the high note. 5:03 o think

  • our concert band is playing this song at worlds of fun for the contest... go saxaphone whooooooooooooooo

  • saxophone roxx! i play alto wbu?

  • the same. wat school u go 2?

  • We are playing this song in orchestra freom 3:05 to 5:03

  • i am playing the same part but in band....go flute

  • were playing this song but till 3:05

  • yah my band is playing this too

  • The music from 3:06 to 5:07 is a Hymn by Holst himself. It's quite famous in England because it was performed during Lady Diana's funeral cerimony. Search for "holst lady diana funeral" on YouTube and click on the first video of the result list "Princess Diana's Funeral Part 14: The Journey to the Catafalque & I Vow to Thee My Country": the Hymn starts at 7'28".

I also wrote an arrangement of this Hymn for 2 trumpets, 2 trombones and organ.

  • 3:06 to 5:07 is the best. Close your eyes, absorb the music. Nothing comes close.

  • This is so beautiful. I don't cry about many things, but 3:04 on makes me so happy. I played it on the clarinet and it was so beautiful. I cannot explain how or what emotions come over me.

  • 3:04 nice

  • I've always loved this piece, and I haven't really listened to it in a while.

I was partially listening to the television in my room, and I got a sudden urge to listen to this song.

As soon as I heard the beginning, I knew why.

The beginning of this piece is in the new Reese's commercial. Shows what they use in advertisement these days.

Anyway, this is one of my favourite compositions. We played a portion in my band class quite a while ago.

  • hah thats funny the reeses commercial made me wanna hear it too

  • My high school marching band definitely did The Planets my Junior year and Jupiter was always my favorite part of the show. This version is awesome =) Thanks for posting

  • at 3:06 to 5:02 my band class are playing that part of the song(mostly because thats the most easiest part of the song!)its funnn

  • mars is the best of all the movements

  • If you don't love this piece, there's something wrong with you. Love the finali!

  • 3:04 to 5:03 wow

  • The melody is so beautiful...I get tears. <3

  • my orchestra is playing this in may. i love all the planets, they are so beautiful!

  • I played this song at my "all county" last year. It was probably my favorite one.

  • This could be the best song ever!

  • inspiring.

  • the melody section makes me shiver every time.

  • Why are all the middle schoolers playing this? I'm in high school and All-State is playing this. All-State... That's rather creepifying. *Sob*

I love this song, though, and I'd kill to play this piece.

  • In Marching Band, Our Music Composer based our show on The Planets and even took an excerpt from Jupiter and added it :P

    Mission Viejo Sax

  • i agree

  • we play this for our 7th grade winter concert. we suck ass though.

  • LOL... I have to audition for High School using this piece. I'm not gonna make it.

  • omg sameee

  • mee tooo we played it for our winter concert

  • lol we played this our senior year in band along with mars it was great!

  • wow ur band must be like amazing. we were gonna play the pink panther for our spring concert but we couldn't do it so we are playing smells like teen spirit and we still suck ass.

  • well that was 04 we had an awesome director and they were not the exact same pieces they were high school versions but it was still fun. you just need a band that can be serious and respect there teacher good luck

  • Heeeeey! I'm playing this in 6th grade band! Well, actually it the senior band and i'm in year 6... They wanted me to be in the senior band for some reason. I play the violin for this!

  • Lmao my school 6th garder played this band thought and this year too. After school people. Ellit band xP

  • i remember playing this at Kansas University it was pretty good.

  • I remember when my 4 brass friends played this in an ensemble in 7th and 8th grade. They were awesome!!!!!

  • I have too play a part of this for band, I play the flute.

  • very precise, but slow tempos and devoid of all emotion- I've never heard the chorale played so emotionlessly and percussive. And the trombones have a tendency to drag.

  • Your post was very intelligent and sophisticated; however, your username is MonkeyShits2. I don't know what to think.

  • Ha! What a perfect reaction to the nature of YouTube users. Thank you for that. Just...thank you.
